Enabling Community And Trust: Shared Leadership For Collective Creativity, Mohammed Mohammed, Kurian Thomas Dec 2014

Enabling Community And Trust: Shared Leadership For Collective Creativity, Mohammed Mohammed, Kurian Thomas

The Foundation Review

The strength of nonprofit organizations comes from well-developed human connections that spur productive collaboration across levels of hierarchy. This article, exploring the experience of the Fetzer Institute, demonstrates that workplace creativity is best fostered if it is matched by a style of leadership that invites a wider spectrum of internal actors to actively participate.

While acknowledging the significance of shared leadership, this article does not necessarily advocate for the dissolution of hierarchy; rather, it points out that the key lies in finding the sweet spot between organizational structure and a creative community.

The article describes tools that are particularly effective …

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of Elementary And Middle School Teachers Regarding Their Participation In Distributed Leadership And Decision Making, Virginia Meadows Mcneil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which elementary and middle school teachers perceived they were being treated as leaders at their schools and were being provided with a substantial role in making school decisions. With respect to their perceived leadership status, elementary and middle school teachers differed only in their assessment of the effectiveness of teacher leadership at their institutions, with elementary teachers offering statistically significant but only slightly more positive ratings than their middle-level counterparts (x²(1) = 6.30, p = .012, ø = -0.04). In examining the perceptions of subgroups of elementary and middle …

Identifying, Cultivating, And Utilizing Elementary Teacher Leaders, April Holder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how elementary principals identify, cultivate, and utilize teacher leaders within high-growth elementary schools. For the purpose of this study, high-growth schools are schools that surpassed the state average of high growth for the bottom 25% and top 75% in English/language arts and math for two consecutive years based on the Indiana Department of Education A-F Accountability Report Card. Through this qualitative study, the roles of the principals in three similar Indiana elementary schools were analyzed in regard to the commonalities of the identification of teacher leaders, cultivating talent and leadership, and …

The Thoughtful Development Of Others: A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Developmental Relationships On Chief Academic Officers In Higher Education, Heidi M. Sherick Nov 2014

The Thoughtful Development Of Others: A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Developmental Relationships On Chief Academic Officers In Higher Education, Heidi M. Sherick

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Higher education rarely develops the capacity of its leaders in an intentional way (Eckel & Hartley, 2011). “Colleges and universities, unlike many similarly sized corporations, do not view talent development as a strategic priority” (Eckel & Hartley, 2011, p. 29). The complexity of higher education, as well as the increased demands and challenges, require better prepared leaders. Despite this need, there is little research on informal one-on-one leadership development tactics in higher education. To understand how leadership is fostered informally, this study focused on developmental relationships in higher education. Specifically, this study examined the role developmental relationships, and the functions …

Doing A Lot With A Little: Making Digital Humanities Work At A Small College, Deborah Vanderbilt Nov 2014

Doing A Lot With A Little: Making Digital Humanities Work At A Small College, Deborah Vanderbilt

English Faculty/Staff Publications

I'm interested in how one goes about integrating digital tools into the liberal arts, and my perspective is that of a long-time faculty member in a small department at a small school. The common wisdom is that today's students know and can do more than most faculty in all things digital, and we need merely provide opportunities for them to use those skills. But that's not true for many students. Our department's newest faculty member has a specialty in digital media, specifically gamification. And although many students are flocking to her classes, she's also encountering resistance from some English majors: …

Teamwork: Crucible For Learning About Collaborative Leadership, Lisa Deangelis, Sherry H. Penney, Maureen A. Scully

Center for Collaborative Leadership Publications

In teaching leadership development we have developed and revised a model of teamwork and collaboration, which has yielded innovative and positive results. Our study draws on insights from more than 90 project teams, gathered over twelve years of a mid-career executive education program designed specifically to teach collaborative leadership. The teams work on a strategic dilemma with a business association or community organization, highlighting the civic engagement aspect of collaborative leadership. Teams devise their own operating procedures, refine (not simply manage) the project, create working relationships with multiple stakeholders, and present a deliverable within the nine-month span of the program. …

Considering Distributed Leadership And Its Effects On Teacher Leadership Practices And Student Achievement Leadership Practices And Student Achievement, Justin Finney

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examined the construct of distributed leadership in schools. This work presents the results of a theory building study investigating the following research questions: (a) In schools, is there a relationship between distributed leadership practices and increased student achievement? (b) How does distributed leadership shape and inform the experiences, practices, and agency of teachers and school administrators within a school that espouses a distributed paradigm with regard to its leadership and management practices? These questions were considered through a longitudinal mixed methods study of the leadership practices at Grantham Middle School and Bishop Elementary. The findings suggest that distributed …

Editor's Note, Padraig O'Malley

New England Journal of Public Policy

On December 3, 2013, when the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released its Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores, the ranking of the United States as number 27 on the global scoreboard elicited little surprise among teachers, educational professionals, academics, and educational policymakers. The usual platitudes were trotted out—no mention that the United States’ standing was getting any worse, just which other countries were passing us by. We were stuck at a perennial average.

The results are in a sense a metaphor of the slow decline of the United State since the 1970s from a position of …

South Carolina Public High Schools: Leadership, Network Dynamics And Innovation, Brandon Blackwell Aug 2014

South Carolina Public High Schools: Leadership, Network Dynamics And Innovation, Brandon Blackwell

All Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify and model the role of leaders in a complex organization. This paper analyzed the spread of innovations through use of Complexity Theory, Complexity Leadership Theory, and Social Network Theory. Complexity Leadership Theory suggests that certain 'conditions', 'attractors', or relationships must be present during the early stages of innovation, causing the emergence of innovation, long before an innovation reaches institutionalization. A Dynamic Network Analysis will be used to explore the inner workings and relationships that are present that influence the innovation as it moves through from emergence to possible institutionalization.

Authentic Leadership In Higher Education: Influencing The Development Of Future Leaders, Sherry Fraser Aug 2014

Authentic Leadership In Higher Education: Influencing The Development Of Future Leaders, Sherry Fraser

Education Doctoral

Higher education institutions are confronted with, and impacted by critical national and global issues. Economic uncertainties and fiscal failures, increasing demands for tighter checks and balances, and widespread corruption of those in positions of leadership are just a few of these issues. Leadership has a direct impact on how effectively and ethically organizations fulfill their mission, meet their goals, and realize anticipated outcomes. This is particularly true today in the complex and fast-changing context of higher education in the 21st century. This study focused on higher education leadership using quantum and authentic leadership theories as the theoretic foundation. Mixed methods …

The Effect That Confidence Has On The Behavior Of The Principal And Superintendent As The School's Educational Leader, Thomas Thompson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative bounded, multi-site case study was to explore the effect that confidence has on the behavior of the principal and superintendent as the school's educational leader. The participants of this study were principals and superintendents of eight K-12 institutions in Northern Colorado. While the data addressing this multi-level epistemological observation are revealed through the narrative process, the framework for observing and codifying the research was derived from a qualitative multi-site case methodology where participants engaged in interviews and surveys, and whereby the researcher synthesized three research fields into one. Data were collected from the participant leaders …

Learning To Practice Leadership For Social Justice: An Autoethnography, David S. Martin Mar 2014

Learning To Practice Leadership For Social Justice: An Autoethnography, David S. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Some students in schools are served well, whereas others are not. Students traditionally marginalized in schools are students of color, students whose native language is not English, students who receive free and reduced-price lunches, and students with an individualized education program. On nearly all measures in all schools, there exists a persistent achievement gap. The role of leadership in schools can be an important piece in addressing the achievement gap. Traditional leadership has focused on managerial skills such as efficiency, charisma, heroism, decisiveness, and confidence. Another form of leadership exists that can serve to lessen or eliminate the achievement gap: …

Inspirational Leadership: The Written Theory Versus The Theory-In-Action, David Dinn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to observe the leadership practices of Dr. Austin at Warren County Community College (WCCC), Washington, NJ versus the espoused leadership practices of inspirational leadership (Austin, 2009). The study also examined Dr. Austin's leadership qualities to determine ways they fit current effective practices as outlined by Kouzes and Posner (2001) and ways they deviate. A single case-study design was constructed and data were collected from interviews, observations, public announcements, and the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). Data analysis suggests that Dr. Austin performed a variety of leadership practices that had a positive impact on WCCC. Findings …

Love As A Replacement For Fear In The Workplace, Debby Thomas Jan 2014

Love As A Replacement For Fear In The Workplace, Debby Thomas

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Fear is routinely used in organizations and interpersonal relationships as a source of motivation. Some research supports the use of fear to motivate employees to work and to change. However, fear has long lasting negative effects that outweigh the motivation that it produces. This paper proposes and supports the notion of love as a central motivator in place of fear. Inner texture exegesis of 1 John 4:18, along with recent research on love in organizations, supports the move from fear to love. Love produces long lasting effects of inspiration and heart level motivation, increased creativity and effectiveness, and a release …

Effective leadership practices have been identified as: systems for engaging others, long term leadership practices, and creative collaboration.

Servant-Leadership Priorities Within American And South Korean Cultures, Scott Lincoln Jan 2014

Servant-Leadership Priorities Within American And South Korean Cultures, Scott Lincoln

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Although servant-leadership is not a fundamentally new idea, it has received more attention in the last few decades. While the concept has a number of proponents in the Western world, there is a paucity of research on how acceptable its tenets are for Asian audiences. Certain studies (Winston and Ryan 2008; Trompenaars and Voerman 2010) purport that servant-leadership is a leadership style that can be applied globally in various cultural contexts. However, on the face of it, this seems to contradict the central idea of culturally endorsed implicit leadership theories put forward by the venerable GLOBE study (House et al. …

Discursive Leadership And Conceptual Fluency In Non-Native English Speakers' Online Task-Based Dialogues, Umit Boz Jan 2014

Discursive Leadership And Conceptual Fluency In Non-Native English Speakers' Online Task-Based Dialogues, Umit Boz

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Much research has examined how different patterns of social interaction shape language learners' interactional roles (e.g., collaborative, dominant, passive) in peer-to-peer conversations. However, little or no research has investigated the co-construction of such roles in multiparty, online task-based dialogues within the framework of discursive leadership. For the purpose of this study, discursive leadership is defined as the ability of the interlocutors to (a) shape the discourse via topic introductions and subsequent topic mentions and (b) manage the process of the task through the use of a series of task-oriented speech acts such as directives and assertions. Using a multi-method approach …

This report provides statistics over 25 years from several national datasets that address the status of employment and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The authors use abbreviations for both intellectual disability (ID) and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in this report. We do this because data sources vary in the specific target groups that can be described.

We provide a comprehensive overview that describes national trends in employment for people with IDD, and the appendices provide individual state profiles with data from several sources. These include the ICI’s IDD Agency National Survey of Day and Employment …
