When The State Is Evil: Biblical Civil (Dis)Obedience In South Africa, Joel A. Nichols, James W. Mccarty Iii
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
A close reading of the New Testament, though, reveals that there is not one uniform answer to this question. The New Testament does not prescribe one appropriate stance for Christians to take against the civil authorities. Rather, there appear to be alternate (or perhaps various) stances that are permitted, depending on the exigencies of the time and the various circumstances. To explore this thesis, Part I explores biblical texts in Acts-Jude that speak to the relationship between Christians and the civil government, with a particular focus upon Acts 5:28 and Romans 13:1-7. Part II, which is the heart of …
"Now These Things Happened As Examples For Us" (1 Cor. 10:6):The Biblical-Narrative Depiction Of Human Sinfulness, Stephen Frederick Jenks
"Now These Things Happened As Examples For Us" (1 Cor. 10:6):The Biblical-Narrative Depiction Of Human Sinfulness, Stephen Frederick Jenks
Dissertations (1934 -)
For several decades voices from various sectors of Christianity have decried the loss of compelling language for sin. The atrophying of sin language is of no small moment due to the organic connection between theological loci. Sin talk relates to salvation-talk, human-talk, and Christ-talk. Further, the loss of compelling sin language threatens to silence the church's voice in the culture.
Both classic and contemporary theologies of sin, pursuing the essentialist methods of the past, attempt to define sin and derive the fullness of the doctrine of sin from these distillations. However, many of these renderings of sin are insufficiently attentive …
The Lausanne Movement: A Range Of Perspectives, Lars Dahle, Margunn Serigstad Dahle, Knud Jorgenson
The Lausanne Movement: A Range Of Perspectives, Lars Dahle, Margunn Serigstad Dahle, Knud Jorgenson
Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series
The Lausanne Movement has since 1974 functioned as a platform and forum for Evangelical leaders from various geographical and confessional strands. This volume gives a broad perspective on the development mission and evangelism among Evangelicals, with a particular focus on the Lausanne movement. It contains chapters about the historical, theological and missiological background and discusses key issues and concepts of Lausanne as they have emerged over the years. It and reflections on Cape Town and on Lausanne. Critical views are also included, aiming at opening up a dialogue with other views on evangelism and mission.
Liberation In The Latino/A Americas: Retrospect And Prospect, Christopher D. Tirres
Liberation In The Latino/A Americas: Retrospect And Prospect, Christopher D. Tirres
Religious Studies
This chapter provides an overview of how a number of liberation thinkers in the United States, who are indebted to an earlier tradition of Latin American liberation theology, have attempted to answer this question.1 As we will see, whereas a first generation of Latin American liberation theologians tended to approach “liberation” as an ethical and political category, a subsequent generation of liberationist thinkers in the United States have often highlighted its cultural and aesthetic dimensions. In so many words, an earlier Latin American understanding of liberation as political “revolution” has, in the North, been reinterpreted in terms of aesthetic …
Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im
Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im
Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series
The movement of people from their homelands is increasing exponentially. Such waves of both immigration and migration triggered by various factors have created new opportunities for the church and its mission. This volume explores such global diasporas from both ecclesiological and missiological perspectives. Its various case studies invite reconsideration of the missionary and evangelistic task of the church in response to contemporary global dynamics. The image of the dandelion on the front cover symbolizes diverse people groups dispersed around the globe, even as the Christian imagination views such dispersal as being carried by the winds of the Holy Spirit.

A Critical Examination Of Justin Ukpong's Inculturation Hermeneutics., Matthew Lanser
A Critical Examination Of Justin Ukpong's Inculturation Hermeneutics., Matthew Lanser
CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses
The interpretation of the Bible in Africa is a broad and rapidly developing field, and also one that has attracted relatively little attention in the academy. While Justin’s Ukpong’s theory and method of biblical interpretation has generated significant discussion in the field, this study offers the first broad, critical examination of the internal coherence of Ukpong’s inculturation hermeneutics and of its broader usefulness for the theory and practice of interpreting the Bible in Africa. I begin by describing the assumptions, method, and practice of Ukpong’s inculturation hermeneutics. I proceed by using Schreiter’s criteria for contextual theologies to evaluate the coherence …
Searching For A Self-Reflexive Theology: Ways Forward For Systematic Theology In Relation To (Non) Religious Thought In Contemporary Western Culture, Colby Dickinson
Searching For A Self-Reflexive Theology: Ways Forward For Systematic Theology In Relation To (Non) Religious Thought In Contemporary Western Culture, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article aims to draw attention, first, to the need to explore the inner plurality of theological discourse, as such plural discourses serve to promote a certain dynamism and fullness within theology as a field, especially in relation to religious studies today. Second, such a potential fullness is reflected in the modern struggle to characterize the relationship between faith and reason. Comprehending the misunderstandings, often construed as an impasse between faith and reason, could foster new relations between scientific methods and theological imaginations. Third, understanding these tensions from a systematic theological perspective also entails a more precise analysis of the …
Contextual Theological Education In Africa As A Model For Missional Formation, Susan Murithi
Contextual Theological Education In Africa As A Model For Missional Formation, Susan Murithi
The Asbury Journal
This paper argues that teaching of contextual theological education in Africa can aid in missional formation of students, teachers, and their communities. Further, common African struggles are explored as a way of discovering how theological education can be used to address Africa’s unique situation. The paper further asserts that the only kind of education with the power to form humanity is the one that relates to them and addresses their unique situations, and answers their questions. To form missional Christians in Africa, we need contextual education in our training institutions.

Conscience And Community: Exploring The Relationship Between Conscience Formation And Systemic Corruption (In Nigeria), Augustine E. Ebido
Conscience And Community: Exploring The Relationship Between Conscience Formation And Systemic Corruption (In Nigeria), Augustine E. Ebido
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on the impact of the moral community (or social context) on the formation of conscience and its implication for moral responsibility. It is an interdisciplinary approach to theological reflection that is particularly attentive to psychological, philosophical, sociological, and neurobiological viewpoints showing how these have either distorted or broadened our understanding of conscience in its relation to community and social responsibility, or its formation in relationship to our moral development. It stresses reciprocity of conduct (for we are "responders") and the complementarities of internal and external sanctions. It insists that the influence of conscience on behavior is undermined …

The Soul Of Korean Christianity: How The Shamans, Buddha, And Confucius Paved The Way For Jesus In The Land Of The Morning Calm, Colin Lewis
Honors Projects
Whether one is speaking of its progressive elements or its charismatic characteristics, Korean Christianity exhibits a vibrancy that stands out among the religious traditions of modern East Asia. Its evangelistic zeal and enormous growth have led to its being a locus point of Christian faith for those in non-Western contexts. In light of its vibrancy and prominence, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the church in Korea is proof that Christianity may thrive outside of the West.
At the same time, the reasons for Christianity’s success on the Korean peninsula are more difficult to pin down. Why …
