Prison Study Unlocks New Doors, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018

Among St. Norbert’s four McNair scholars who presented their research to the campus community last month was Rachel Gintner ’14. Gintner's work on prison narratives took her to the University of Illinois at Chicago this summer. She reflects on a research opportunity that brought new perspective in more ways than one – and on the McNair experience itself, a program that prepares underrepresented students for graduate work.

Muchos Mentores En Iowa: The Pedagogy Of Student To Student Mentoring In Information Literacy, Julia Bauder, Beth Bohstedt, Phillip Jones

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.

Here Come The Nones! Pluralism And Evangelization After Denominationalism And Americanism, William L. Portier Dec 2013

Here Come The Nones! Pluralism And Evangelization After Denominationalism And Americanism, William L. Portier

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

This essay begins with a four-part overview of American Catholic history focused on the building and dissolution of an immigrant Catholic subculture. The final period, “Catholics and the Dynamics of Pluralism (1968-present)” leads naturally into a discussion of the demography of Catholics in the United States. Particular attention is given to the trend to disaffiliation among millennials and how best to interpret it. Pastoral and theological reflections on the demography of disaffiliation emphasize the need for the church in the United States to take on an evangelical form more suited to a pluralism that is post-denominational and post-Americanist, and how …

Storied Lives In A Living Tradition: Women Rabbis And Jewish Community In 21st Century New Mexico, Miria Kano

Anthropology ETDs

Between 2001 and 2012, I collaborated with Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, Rabbi Malka Drucker, Rabbi Shefa Gold, Rabbi Min Kantrowitz, and Rabbi Deborah Brin to investigate the challenges and opportunities afforded by womens recent attainment of rabbinic ordination. As members of the first and second generations of women rabbis, they offer unique perspectives on the recent histories of both American and Jewish cultures. This dissertation is a narrative exploration of how these rabbis came of age, cultivated self-understanding, chose careers as spiritual leaders, crafted public identities, and formed communities in 20th/21st Century American Jewish societies. This research focuses on the role …

Dam Mormons: Responding To The 1976 Teton Dam Disaster In The "Lord's Way", Lauriann Vaterlaus Deaver

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The June 5, 1976, Teton Dam collapse occurred in a unique region of Idaho where the population comprised as much as ninety-five percent of residents belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The homogenous nature of this population influenced the nature of the recovery effort following the disaster. The Teton Dam recovery effort provided an opportunity for the LDS church, using its welfare system and priesthood (lay male leadership) organizational structure to seamlessly work with government agencies. Church leaders used the reports of positive interactions between its members and the federal and local leaders to celebrate an …

Titanic: Consuming The Myths And Meanings Of An Ambiguous Brand, Stephen Brown, Pierre Mcdonagh, Clifford J. Shultz

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Myths have come of age in consumer research. In the 22 years since Levy’s inaugural article, the literature has grown at an impressive rate. Yet important questions remain unanswered: What makes some myths especially meaningful to consumers? Why are certain consumer myths more prevalent and less perishable than others? This article argues that ambiguity is an influential factor. Using the RMS Titanic as an empirical exemplar, it unpacks the principal forms of myth-informed ambiguity surrounding “the unsinkable brand.” Predicated on William Empson’s hitherto unsung principles of literary criticism, the article posits that ambiguity in its multifaceted forms is integral to …

Contracting Colonialism And The Long 1970s, Vicente L. Rafael Nov 2013

Contracting Colonialism And The Long 1970s, Vicente L. Rafael

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

How is it that a book published over twenty-five years ago dealing with a distant historical moment, consisting of a series of close readings of equally obscure texts that few scholars of even the same period bother to read and informed by a style of thinking largely foreign to nationalist ideas, continues to be read and referenced not only in the Philippines but in other parts of the world? Thisarticle seeks to answer this question by placing the making of Contracting Colonialism within the context of the long 1970s in both the Philippines and the United States. Keywords: ContraCting Colonialism • …
