Evaluation Of Pediatric Subjects With Swallowing Disorder Part I: Physiology And Pathology, Luh Karunia Wahyuni, Chan-Wei Lin, Tyng-Guey Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Feeding and swallowing disorders are important issues in a pediatric population, which may lead to malnutrition, dehydration, or increased risk of pulmonary complications. Pediatric dysphagia is more complex than adult dysphagia in some aspects because it includes developmental progress in anatomical structures and physiological functions. To manage pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, comprehensive knowledge regarding the development of normal swallowing and of the pathologies of common diseases related to pediatric dysphagia are necessary. In this article, we will reviewarticle the pediatric swallowing structures and physiology, and address the feeding and swallowing problems in common pediatric diseases, including cerebral palsy, cleft …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The characteristics of pediatric swallowing, anatomical differences between pediatrics and adults, and swallowing problems in common pediatric diseases had been introduced in Part 1 of the article. The common methods for evaluation of pediatric swallowing are discussed in this part. The evaluation of swallowing function in pediatric patients is a great clinical challenge. It requires a team approach, an integration of multiple disciplines, and instrumental evaluations for establishing a diagnosis and developing an appropriate management plan. This article provides an introduction of the vital concept of clinical bedside evaluation and instrumental evaluation including the videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), fibroptic endoscopic …

Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3) is an imprinted gene encoding a DNA-binding protein. This gene plays important roles in controlling fetal growth rates and nurturing behaviors. In the current study, a new mutant mouse model has been generated to further characterize the functions of this DNA-binding protein. Besides known phenotypes, this new mutant model also revealed potential roles of Peg3 in mammalian reproduction. Female heterozygotes produce a much smaller number of mature oocytes than the wild-type littermates, resulting in reduced litter sizes. According to genome-wide expression analyses, several placenta-specific gene families are de-repressed in the brain of Peg3 heterozygous embryos, …

Background: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. Differences in survival of breast cancer have been noted among racial and ethnic groups, but the reasons for these disparities remain unclear. This study presents the characteristics and the survival curve of two racial and ethnic groups and evaluates the effects of race on survival times by measuring the lifetime data-based half-normal model. Materials and Methods: The distributions among racial and ethnic groups are compared using female breast cancer patients from nine states in the country all taken from the National Cancer Institute’s …

Social Entrepreneurship That Truly Benefits The Poor: An Integrative Justice Approach, Nicholas J. C. Santos, S.J. Dec 2013

Social Entrepreneurship That Truly Benefits The Poor: An Integrative Justice Approach, Nicholas J. C. Santos, S.J.

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The phenomenal growth of social entrepreneurship over the last decade has ably demonstrated how technology, innovation, and an entrepreneurial spirit can afford better solutions to the vexing social and environmental problems of our time than can traditional aid and charity- based efforts. In most cases, but not always, the poor and disadvantaged have benefited from the growth of social entrepreneurship. In order to ensure that social entrepreneurship does indeed benefit the poor, it is imperative that there be normative guidelines for fair and just engagement with impoverished populations. A model that has been presented in the marketing and public policy …

Seasonal Habitat Selection By Elk In North Central Utah, Jeffrey L. Beck, Kurt T. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, Craig L. Clyde Dec 2013

Seasonal Habitat Selection By Elk In North Central Utah, Jeffrey L. Beck, Kurt T. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, Craig L. Clyde

Western North American Naturalist

Understanding anthropogenic and environmental factors that influence seasonal habitat selection is critical in establishing conservation objectives for wildlife populations. However, many resource selection studies provide inferences only for single seasons, potentially masking factors essential to populations during other times of the year. Our objective was to model elk (Cervus elaphus) habitat selection for 4 seasons to identify factors influencing selection within and across seasons. Using aerial relocation data, we evaluated seasonal habitat selection for 46 radio-marked, migratory adult female elk in a 6123-km2 landscape in north central Utah, USA, from 1993 to 1997. We evaluated habitat use …

Scaling Impact In The Health Sector, Al Hammond Dec 2013

Scaling Impact In The Health Sector, Al Hammond

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

This essay examines possible routes to achieving significant health improvements in the underserved populations of developing countries. It argues that unconventional strategies, largely outside the health sector as conventionally defined, have the greatest potential to scale sustainably. The essay describes two such strategies—nutrition and safe drinking water. In particular, the essay argues that impact investors focused on social enterprises can best maximize their health impact by looking closely at the strategies described herein.

Infrared Vibrational Spectroscopy Analysis Of Selected Biomolecules, Busra Ergul Dec 2013

Infrared Vibrational Spectroscopy Analysis Of Selected Biomolecules, Busra Ergul

Theses and Dissertations

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a useful tool to examine biological molecules for noninvasive measurements. This research has focused on the determination of concentrations of four important biomolecules, glucose, gluconic acid, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and dopamine by FTIR. It is crucial to determine blood glucose levels for diabetes diagnosis. H2O2 is an important biomolecule having implications in aging and aging related diseases. Gluconic acid is important in food and pharmaceutical industries, and dopamine plays a key role in brain activity. In this work, first, glucose, gluconic acid, and H2O2 in aqueous solutions have been studied by using FTIR. Standard …

Arkansas's Early Home Demonstration Club Members: Making The Work Their Own, Elizabeth A. Hill Dec 2013

Arkansas's Early Home Demonstration Club Members: Making The Work Their Own, Elizabeth A. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

In its attempt to retain the nation's farmers and farm families on the land during the early twentieth century, the U. S. Department of Agriculture found that the situation in the South was particularly problematic as it included dilapidated farm homes, malnutrition, and "poverty of spirit." In order to combat these deficiencies, the home demonstration program taught farm women improved methods for accomplishing their household responsibilities. It also encouraged the women to better their families' living conditions through home improvements and labor-saving devices. This study explores how Arkansas's early home demonstration club members accepted, within their own limitations and spheres …

A Study Of Serum Protein Electrophoresis In Patients With Multiple Myeloma, Hind Shakir Ahmed Dec 2013

A Study Of Serum Protein Electrophoresis In Patients With Multiple Myeloma, Hind Shakir Ahmed

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is caused by the malignant proliferation of plasma cells through the bone marrow. The clinical features are due to disordered immunoglobulin synthesis and/or secretion from the cell. The amount of protein in the vascular compartment depends on the balance between the rate of synthesis and catabolism or loss. Electrophoresis is a technique that separates compounds such as proteins according to their different electrical charge. In this way, five main groups of proteins namely albumin and the α1, α2, β, γ-globulins, may be distinguished after protein staining and may be visually compared with those in a …
