How Ending Gender Violence In India Improves The Nation's International Reputation And Tourism Industry: A Case For Nationalism, Sharon Nambudripad Schiffer

Graduate Masters Theses

As nations have become far more interconnected by means of globalization in the 21st century, the issues that affect one nation often have affects upon others. As India is a nation with a population of more than 1.2 billion, the issues that affect the nation also affect others. As an assault in Delhi, India made international news on December 16, 2012, the international community has become more aware of the incidents of gender-based violence that exist within the country. Differences Between Healthcare Systems In Costa Rica & The United States And How Those Differences Affect The Overall Quality Of Healthcare, Carlie Decker

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to examine the similarities and differences between the healthcare system employed in Costa Rica and the healthcare system employed in the United States through a series of interviews and web-based research. Four healthcare system components will be examined in order to determine the success of each system. These components include health insurance coverage, access to pharmaceuticals, medical licensing requirements, and medical research.

Following the completion of the interviews and research, I found that United States citizens pay nearly four times the amount Costa Rican citizens do for health insurance coverage. This dramatic increase in price can be …

Global Health Faculty Publications

Introduction US Navy hospital ships are used as a foreign policy instrument to achieve various objectives that include building partnerships. Despite substantial resource investment by the Department of Defense (DoD) in these missions, their impact is unclear. The purpose of this study was to understand how and why hospital ship missions influence partnerships among the different participants.

Methods An embedded case study was used and included the hospital ship Mercy's mission to Timor-Leste in 2008 and 2010 with four units of analysis: the US government, partner nation, host nation, and nongovernmental organizations. Key stakeholders representing each unit were interviewed using …

Development Of An Evidence-Based Resource Guide For Nurses On Medical Missions In Developing Countries, Natalie Ann Masco Oct 2013

Development Of An Evidence-Based Resource Guide For Nurses On Medical Missions In Developing Countries, Natalie Ann Masco

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:

Background: In 2007, an estimated 1.6 million Americans were sent on international short-term medical missions by more than 40,000 sending entities (churches, agencies, schools, etc.) at a cost of three billion dollars (Tazelaar, 2011). Many arguments about the utility and effectiveness of short-term medical missions exist in the literature. While professionals who take part in the trips do so to help others, without proper preparation and education on medical conditions and cultural needs there is a risk for causing more harm than good. Without training, volunteers will be psychologically and culturally unprepared to …

Students' Reflections Of A Global Service-Learning Experience, Alice L. March, Marilyn Handley Oct 2013

Students' Reflections Of A Global Service-Learning Experience, Alice L. March, Marilyn Handley

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:

Purpose: Educating nurses for today's global healthcare environment requires providing unique learning experiences designed to foster the development of cultural competence. This may be enhanced by cultural immersion. Not only are students face-to-face with actual health problems, but they are imbedded in the very culture that has produced those alterations, and can clearly observe the proscriptions and prescriptions that will directly and indirectly affect health teaching and care. A service-learning framework, highlighting healthcare, culture, and spirituality guided learning and reflective journal entries of undergraduate nursing students participating in a medical mission spearheaded by …

A College Model For Countering Human Trafficking, Ron D. Petitte Oct 2013

A College Model For Countering Human Trafficking, Ron D. Petitte

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 5th (2013)

Creating awareness is part of education and non-awareness is 90 percent of the problem in countering human trafficking. Human trafficking is not on the radar screens in most educational institutions of higher learning, nor in most churches. This is the need Bryan College, through the Center for Leadership Initiatives (CLI) and, in particular, the Justice & Mercy Initiative (JMI), is seeking to meet. Our Vision Statement for 2013-2014 calls for such near term goals as: Sponsoring subject matter experts to address college forums; lending financial support to Students Stopping the Trafficking of Persons (SSTOP); enabling Bryan students to travel to …
