Listening To Primary Schools: Australian Health And Physical Education (Hpe)., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

This research investigated Australian Government Primary School Principal’s perceptions of a University Pre-service Teacher Education course where the graduate teacher is qualified as a generalist primary classroom teacher and a Health and Physical Education specialist. Research suggests that the optimum time for children to learn and refine their motor skills and to be introduced to positive HPE experiences is during preschool and early primary school years. The research data was gathered using surveys completed by 138 government primary school principal participants in the state of Victoria, a large number considering the demanding role of school principal. There were two ethical …

Genetic Sex Conditions And Redefining Sex, Jayce O'Shields Dec 2013

Genetic Sex Conditions And Redefining Sex, Jayce O'Shields

Student Scholarship

Western culture has a tendency to value binaries and discreet categories that separate its social structure and provide a sense of order and organization. The value placed on binaries and categories may be advantageous in some aspects, but when it starts to infringe upon the legal and medical rights of individuals not easily placed in either binary category, it can become less advantageous.

A baby is usually classified as either male or female shortly after birth, and all future legal, social, and economic actions and rights of that individual are more or less decided according to this classification. A problem …

Synthesis And Preliminary Biological Screening Of Bis-Aroyl Methanes And Chemically-Modified Curcumins As Matrix Metalloproteinse Inhibitors, Yijun Chen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of more than 25 structurally-related enzymes that can degrade a variety of substances including collagen. Basal levels of these enzymes play an important role in tissue turnover under normal physiological conditions, while excessive levels of these enzymes may cause or exacerbate many diseases related to tissue loss, including arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, coma, periodontal disease, stroke etc. For decades, research teams from both industrial companies and academic institutions have been trying to develop an effective matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor as a drug to treat MMP-involved diseases. Our group have been working on MMP inhibitor development …

Examining The Ridership Attraction Potential Of Bus Rapid Transit: A Quantitative Analysis Of Image And Perception, Alasdair Cain, Jennifer Flynn Dec 2013

Examining The Ridership Attraction Potential Of Bus Rapid Transit: A Quantitative Analysis Of Image And Perception, Alasdair Cain, Jennifer Flynn

Journal of Public Transportation

If public transit is to attract discretionary riders, it must offer high-quality service and convey an attractive image. Although Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is designed to emulate rail-based transit, there is little quantitative evidence of whether BRT can capture the ridership attraction benefits associated with rail. A combination of focus groups and an attitudinal survey were conducted to assess BRT’s ability to replicate the high-quality image and ridership attraction benefits associated with rail, and to quantify the tangible and intangible factors that drive perceptual differences between alternative transit modes. Research was fielded in Los Angeles due to the city’s range …

Vascular Nanomedicine: Site Specific Delivery Of Elastin Stabilizing Therapeutics To Damaged Arteries, Aditi Sinha Dec 2013

Vascular Nanomedicine: Site Specific Delivery Of Elastin Stabilizing Therapeutics To Damaged Arteries, Aditi Sinha

All Dissertations

Elastin, a structural protein in the extra-cellular matrix, plays a critical role in the normal functioning of blood vessels. Apart from performing its primary function of providing resilience to arteries, it also plays major role in regulating cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, response to injury, and morphogenesis. Medial arterial calcification (MAC) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are two diseases where the structural and functional integrity of elastin is severely compromised. Although the clinical presentation of MAC and AAA differ, they have one common underlying causative mechanism--pathological degradation of elastin. Hence prevention of elastin degradation in the early stages of MAC and …

Kirschner's Modal Ontological Argument, Andrew Kirschner Dec 2013

Kirschner's Modal Ontological Argument, Andrew Kirschner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ontological Arguments for the existence of God, first discovered by St. Anselm (1033-1109), attempt to deduce the existence of God from the concept of God. It is the aim of this thesis to champion a modal version of the Ontological Argument as philosophically sound by demonstrating it to be logically valid and by successfully defending the argument's premises as true. Kirschner's version of the Ontological Argument states:

P1 For every type of entity, instances of that type of entity either actually exist, merely possibly exist, or necessarily do not exist.

P2 If an entity can be conceived, then that entity …

A Bioinformatics Method For Identifying Rna Structures Within Human Cells, Stephen Donald Huff

Physics Seminars

Single-stranded, negative-sense RNA (ssRNA-) serves many varied roles within the eukaryotic cell. Currently known examples include snRNA (short nuclear), snoRNA (short nucleolar), tRNA (transfer), siRNA (silencing), miRNA (micro), and others [1,2]. Unknown examples are currently being studied, also, including the long, non-coding ssRNA- found in the nuclear paraspeckle, a component of unknown function located within the eukaryotic nucleus and comprised of ssRNA- sequences transcribed from so-called ‘junk’ DNA [3,4]. While a growing list of confirmed physiological functions have been attributed to ssRNA-, additional roles likely exist and have yet to be discovered. Further, since ssRNA- is known to bind to …

The Envenoming Pandemic And The Misguided Views Of Snakes: Developing Sustainable Relationships Between Native Poisonous Snakes Of India And The Citizens Of Maharashtra Through The Use Of The Irula Model., Destiny Villanueva

Animal Science

Due to its vast population and general negative consensus regarding snakes, India is notorious for having more snakebite incidents than any other country. Snakes are simultaneously revered and feared in Indian religion and culture. This stigma is perpetuated through propaganda, family beliefs, and innate fears of snakes. These stigmas are more pronounced within rural areas, such as the region of Mahad within the state of Maharshtra. Envenoming is endemic in these areas, and others like them. The World Health Organization identified envenoming as one of the most neglected tropical diseases of the 21st century (Nature India, 2013). Additionally, both nonvenomous and …

Chronic Injuries Due To Running And A Possible Cure With The Barefoot Style, Daniel M. Hoopes Oct 2013

Chronic Injuries Due To Running And A Possible Cure With The Barefoot Style, Daniel M. Hoopes

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Repetitive stress injuries, which are common amongst runners result from an accumulation of microdamage from repeated application of stress. This leads to strain, or deformation. At first, this falls within the physiologic range of elastic deformation. With excessive running, bones can be subjected to supraphysiologic plastic deformation and soft tissues can be subjected to supraphysiologic viscous deformation. High strain and high rates of application of that strain can lead to fatigue damage In bone, this manifests as microcracks, and as failures of collagen cross-links in soft tissue. These small-scale failures allow elastic hysteresis, which is the difference between the energy …

Development Of Isotags For Nmr Based Metabolite Profiling And Applications, Fariba Tayyari

Open Access Dissertations

NMR spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool for both qualitative and quantitative metabolite profiling analysis. However, accurate quantitative analysis of biological systems especially using one dimensional NMR has been challenging due to signal overlap. In contrast, the enhanced resolution and sensitivity offered by chemoselective isotope tags have enabled new and enhanced methods for detecting hundreds of quantifiable metabolites in biofluids using NMR spectroscopy or mass spectrometry. In this thesis we show improved sensitivity and resolution of NMR experiments imparted by 15N and 13C isotope tagging which enables the accurate analysis of plasma metabolites. To date, isotope tagging has been used …

Serotonin Transporter Genotype Modulates Functional Connectivity Between Amygdala And Pcc/Pcu During Mood Recovery, Zhuo Fang, Senhua Zhu, Seth J. Gillihan, Marc Korczykowski Oct 2013

Serotonin Transporter Genotype Modulates Functional Connectivity Between Amygdala And Pcc/Pcu During Mood Recovery, Zhuo Fang, Senhua Zhu, Seth J. Gillihan, Marc Korczykowski

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

The short (S) allele of the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) has been associated with increased susceptibility to depression. Previous neuroimaging studies have consistently showed increased amygdala activity during the presentation of negative stimuli or regulation of negative emotion in the homozygous short allele carriers, suggesting the key role of amygdala response in mediating increased risk for depression. The brain default mode network (DMN) has also been shown to modulate amygdala activity. However, it remains unclear whether 5-HTTLPR genetic variation modulates functional connectivity (FC) between the amygdala and regions of DMN. In this study, we re-analyzed our previous imaging dataset …

Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Oculomotor Control During Goal-Directed Eye Movements In Humans, Vincent Dang Oct 2013

Characterization Of Two-Dimensional Oculomotor Control During Goal-Directed Eye Movements In Humans, Vincent Dang

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Oculomotor control is a subset of sensorimotor control that allows humans to make extremely accurate eye movements for ADL. Impairments to oculomotor control can increase the impact of sensorimotor control deficits, especially in neurodegenerative diseases such as MS. Here, a two-dimensional computational control system of saccades and smooth-pursuit eye movements was compiled from literature to systematically characterize oculomotor control in eight visually-healthy humans as a precursor to studying the relationship between oculomotor and sensorimotor control in patient populations. Subjects visually tracked a single dot on a 41 x 30.5 cm monitor in a dark room while eye positions were recorded …

The Adrenal Cortex Cell Line H295r Releases Interleukin-6, Timothy E. Lindsay, Dr. Allan M. Judd

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Up to this point, the study of adrenal glands has utilized mostly rat and bovine models. However, in the research of human physiology, human models are preferable to animal models. But human adrenal glands are difficult to obtain, and when they are obtained, experiments often have limited sample sizes. In addition, human adrenal glands available for research are often functionally altered by disease. Also, donors with healthy adrenal glands may be administered multiple pharmacological agents which modify adrenal functions. These obstacles show how a model that provides an unlimited quantity of tissue with consistent secretion patterns would take precedent over …

What Critical Resources Do Hispanic Women Of Childbearing Age In Utah Need To Promote Adequate Health Care Practices?, Teresa Paredes, Dr. Ana Birkhead

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The health care practices of Hispanic childbearing age women in Utah affect the overall health care system in Utah. We believe immigrant Hispanic women lack resources (i.e. education, cultural, transportation) to take care of their health and their families. My mentor and I believe the lack of these resources influence Hispanic women’s health status and access to adequate health care. It is crucial for immigrant Hispanic women in Utah to obtain culturally sensitive resources in their communities that will help them learn how to care for their own health and the well-being of their families.

An Evolutionary Approach To Understanding Social Facilitation:Energy Expenditure And Exercise Motivation, Ann E. Caldwell Hooper Sep 2013

An Evolutionary Approach To Understanding Social Facilitation:Energy Expenditure And Exercise Motivation, Ann E. Caldwell Hooper

Psychology ETDs

The current research draws on evolutionary and life history theory to understand social facilitation of human energy expenditure, and test predictions focused on when and for whom increases in energetic effort are more likely to occur. Two studies tested the premise that cues of mates and/or competitors for mates can modify perceptions of the socio-ecological context of energy expenditure, and thereby change short-term energetic effort and exercise motivation and self-efficacy. Tests of psychological and physiological mediators and moderators were performed. Results provide preliminary support for the utilization of evolutionary theory to understand social facilitation by demonstrating significant effects of primes …

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) are high-density lipoprotein–associated (HDL-associated) proteins mechanistically linked to inflammation, oxidant stress, and atherosclerosis. MPO is a source of ROS during inflammation and can oxidize apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1) of HDL, impairing its atheroprotective functions. In contrast, PON1 fosters systemic antioxidant effects and promotes some of the atheroprotective properties attributed to HDL. Here, we demonstrate that MPO, PON1, and HDL bind to one another, forming a ternary complex, wherein PON1 partially inhibits MPO activity, while MPO inactivates PON1. MPO oxidizes PON1 on tyrosine 71 (Tyr71), a modified residue found in human atheroma that is critical for …

Factors And Convergent Validity Of The Pet Attachment And Life Impact Scale (Pals), Lisa Demarni Cromer, M. Rose Barlow

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human-animal interaction (HAI) provides benefits for humans. Emotional attachment to pets is a possible mechanism for benefits but there is no standard operationalization for “attachment to pets.” The study presented here (N = 651) uses a pet attachment measure based on qualitative research about benefits of pets. This measure, the Pet Attachment and Life Impact Scale (PALS), has four factors that measure Love, Regulation, Personal Growth, and Negative Impacts. We present exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis of the instrument. We then examine convergent validity with four a priori derived measures of pet attachment (Anthropomorphism Scale, CENSHARE PAS, …

Changing Status Of Women And The Phenomenon Trafficking Of Women For Transactional Sex In Nigeria: A Qualitative Analysis, Clementina A. Osezua

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the changing status of Bini women occasioned by the upsurge and endemic nature of the phenomenon of trafficking of women for the purpose of transactional sex. It engaged ethnographic methods of data collection with the use of family based interviews, focus group discussions using vignette stories, life histories, and key informant interviewing. Data were analyzed based on emerged themes. Findings revealed that “successful” trafficked Bini women enjoyed high socio-economic status in their families of procreation especially where family members were the direct recipients of the proceeds from transactional sex. Most mothers of “successfully” trafficked victims wielded greater …
