Perceptions Of Disaster Risk And Vulnerability In Rural Texas, Andrew J. Prelog, Lee M. Miller
Perceptions Of Disaster Risk And Vulnerability In Rural Texas, Andrew J. Prelog, Lee M. Miller
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Rural areas are uniquely vulnerable to a variety of hazards given their social and economic composition. Economic reliance on agriculture and natural resource extraction increases vulnerability to certain types of natural hazards such as drought, wildfires, and floods. Moreover, rural communities often lack adequate resources to prepare for and respond to disasters. Using data from the Texas Rural Survey, the U.S. Census, and the Spatial Hazards Events and Losses Database for the United States; this research explores questions related to risk perception, vulnerability to disaster, and perceptions of community efficacy in a rural context. Results indicate that rural Texans show …
An Unexpected Legacy: Women, Early Rural Sociological Research, And The Limits Of Linearity, Julie N. Zimmerman
An Unexpected Legacy: Women, Early Rural Sociological Research, And The Limits Of Linearity, Julie N. Zimmerman
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
We often think of history in linear terms: past as prologue, one event following another, one year leading into the next. In a Rostowian-styled model of development, this kind of linear progression prefigures not only conceptualizations about the past, but also assumptions about the present. This paper reexamines the unexpected appearance of women and women’s lives embedded in early rural sociological research to consider how implicit assumptions about the past prefigure what we expect to “see” and influence the way we make sense of it.

Forecasting Distributional Responses Of Limber Pine To Climate Change At Management-Relevant Scales In Rocky Mountain National Park, William B. Monahan, Tammy Cook, Forrest Melton, Jeff Connor, Ben Bobowski
School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Resource managers at parks and other protected areas are increasingly expected to factor climate change explicitly into their decision making frameworks. However, most protected areas are small relative to the geographic ranges of species being managed, so forecasts need to consider local adaptation and community dynamics that are correlated with climate and affect distributions inside protected area boundaries. Additionally, niche theory suggests that species' physiological capacities to respond to climate change may be underestimated when forecasts fail to consider the full breadth of climates occupied by the species rangewide. Here, using correlative species distribution models that contrast estimates of climatic …

Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau1, Brandon D. Lundy
Negotiating Development: Valuation Of A Guesthouse Project In Southern Guinea-Bissau1, Brandon D. Lundy
Faculty Articles
This paper provides a case study illustrating the crossroads between the agendas of international/national economic development with that of the development objectives of local communities. It shows how a community development project connects villagers to the larger world – both practically and imaginatively. This study takes a single case, the process of developing a guesthouse building project among the Nalú of southern Guinea-Bissau, to illustrate how a local attempt to connect to the outside world is intersected by community relations, NGOs, and development discourse. Through a community study using ethnographic methodology including participant observation, interviews, and focus groups, the village …

The Role Of Ict In Scaling Up The Impact Of Social Enterprises, Ramon Fisac-Garcia, Manuel Acevedo-Ruiz, Ana Moreno-Romero, Thane Kreiner
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can help social enterprises and other organizations working on global sustainability issues and in the human development sector in general scale their social impact. The flexibility, dynamism, and ubiquity of ICTs make them powerful tools for improving relationships among organizations and their beneficiaries, multiplying the effects of action against many, if not all, aspects of global unsustainability, including poverty and exclusion. The scaling of social impact occurs in two different dimensions. On one hand, ICTs can increase the value proposition of a program or action (depth scaling) in different ways: providing accurate and fast needs …

New Records Of Marginal Locations For American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) In The Western Great Basin, Constance I. Millar, Robert D. Westfall, Diane L. Delany
Western North American Naturalist
We describe 46 new site records documenting occupancy by American pika (Ochotona princeps) at 21 locations from 8 mountain regions in the western Great Basin, California, and Nevada. These locations comprise a subset of sites selected from regional surveys to represent marginal, isolated, or otherwise atypical pika locations, and to provide information for assessing environmental tolerance limits. Several locations are known from historic observations (Madeline Plain, Bodie Mtns., Wassuk Mtns., Mono Craters) and are included here to update current status. Site elevations range from 1848 m to 3392 m; relative to the broad range of pika sites in …

Interculturality And World Literary System(S), Jola Škulj
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Interculturality and World Literary System(s)" Jola Škulj proposes a new framework for studying planetary exchanges of literatures, one that subverts the systemic distinction between centers and peripheries. She advocates a model that can yield the analytical conceptualization and hermeneutic understanding of literary phenomena and their historical reality in the complexity of semiotic traces, in actual distinctiveness of formal and textual deposits, and in interconnections of poetological impacts. She argues that literary facts seen in such intricate networks of mutual intertextual phenomenology and reaccentuations attest to their character of permanent mobility, evident instability, and constant inventive reformulation of …
Positive Uncertainty And The Ethos Of Comparative Literature, Brigitte Le Juez
Positive Uncertainty And The Ethos Of Comparative Literature, Brigitte Le Juez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Positive Uncertainty and the Ethos of Comparative Literature" Brigitte Le Juez examines the continuous difficulty comparatists have with the lack of definition of the discipline and explores possible new avenues for tackling the problem. Le Juez argues that "uncertainty" recognized as a tenet of comparative literature should not be unheeded, but embraced in order to shift the focus from the idea that comparative objects and methods are the defining elements of the discipline and envisage them as the aims and results of an ethos. Le Juez posits that when "indiscipline" and "serendipity" are added to the notion …

Worlding Literatures Between Dialogue And Hegemony, Marko Juvan
Worlding Literatures Between Dialogue And Hegemony, Marko Juvan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Worlding Literatures between Dialogue and Hegemony" Marko Juvan claims that during its late capitalist renaissance, the Goethean idea of Weltliteratur is interpreted either in terms of intercultural dialogism or hegemony embodied in the asymmetrical structure of the world literary system. Launching the concept of Weltliteratur during the emergence of the early industrial globalization, Goethe initiated a long-lasting transnational meta-discourse that influenced the development of transnational literary practices. In his aristocratic, cosmopolitan humanism, Goethe expected world literature to open up an equal dialogue between civilizations and languages encouraging cross-national networking of the educated elite. However, his notion of …

Precarious Cosmopolitanism In O'Neill's Netherland And Mpe's Welcome To Our Hillbrow, Pier Paolo Frassinelli, David Watson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Precarious Cosmopolitanism in O'Neill's Netherland and Mpe's Welcome to Our Hillbrow" Pier Paolo Frassinelli and David Watson propose a comparative reading of two twenty-first century novels in light of recent debates on cosmopolitanism and precarity. They examine cosmopolitan articulations within a novel dealing with immigrant communities in post-9/11 New York and within a text narrating life in the metropolis of Johannesburg. Both Netherland and Welcome to Our Hillbrow are preoccupied with economic and political precarity in cosmopolitan cities and offer a rich inventory of forms of cosmopolitan desire rooted in modes of life. By aligning and …

National Literature, World Literatures, And Universality In Romanian Cultural Criticism 1867-1947, Andrei Terian
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "National Literature, World Literatures, and Universality in Romanian Cultural Criticism 1867-1947" Andrei Terian analyzes the relevance of systematizing international literary relationships in current theories of world literatures. Terian criticizes the "naturalist" reductionism that still dominates many contemporary studies in the field of world literatures and asserts that a particular feature of the interliterary processes is that they occur not only at the level of mere "facts," but also at the level of cultural "representations" thus supporting various strategies through which national literatures attempt to acquire more favorable positions within world literatures. Terian presents a systemic classification of …

Periodization, Comparative Literature, And Italian Modernism, Donata Meneghelli
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Periodization, Comparative Literature, and Italian Modernism" Donata Meneghelli discusses why periodization is one of the most problematic issues in literary studies. Following a discussion of literary history and comparative literature, Meneghelli focuses on the notion of Italian modernism which has recently begun to circulate in literary studies referring to Italian literature of the beginning of the twentieth century. Meneghelli argues that Italian modernism is a paradoxical and contradictory notion which calls into question the relationships between literary history, geography (literary, cultural, political), and comparative literature while at the same time challenging the new framework of world literature(s) …
Desai's Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard As Global Literature, Erin M. Fehskens
Desai's Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard As Global Literature, Erin M. Fehskens
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Desai's Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard as Global Literature" Erin M. Fehskens argues that scholars readily recognize Kiran Desai's Booker Prize winning second novel The Inheritance of Loss as world literature following David Damrosch's and Franco Moretti's notions. However, Desai's first novel Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is often overlooked. Although Hullabaloo's focus is narrow and local, its allegorical implications encode the processes of globalization and resistance to it into the novel. Thus, the novel can be read as an example of global literature, which uses the discontinuous nature of allegory to critique the de-differentiating practices …
World Literatures, Comparative Literature, And Glocal Cosmopolitanism, Paolo Bartoloni
World Literatures, Comparative Literature, And Glocal Cosmopolitanism, Paolo Bartoloni
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "World Literatures, Comparative Literature, and Glocal Cosmopolitanism" Paolo Bartoloni reflects on the topos of the crisis of literature and the humanities. An urge to question the status and the relevance of literature; to investigate the relation between literature and literary studies; and the location of literature within the context of a transforming world has emerged in the last three decades. Assuming that a bond exists between literature and the world, what is its nature? Is it possible to take an interest in literature without knowing its potential relevance or its world? These questions are related to the …
Poetry And The Ethics Of Global Citizenship, Monique-Adelle Callahan
Poetry And The Ethics Of Global Citizenship, Monique-Adelle Callahan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Poetry and the Ethics of Global Citizenship" Monique-Adelle Callahan argues that the recent work of poets Jorie Graham and Yusef Komunyakaa suggests the emergence of an archetypal poet who transgresses boundaries of place and time through measured wandering amongst cultures and histories. Graham and Komunyakaa offer a poetic discourse on the relationship between poetry and citizenship in an increasingly global world. Through a close reading of excerpts from Graham's 2012 Place and Komunyakaa's 2011 The Chameleon Couch, Callahan uses the paradigm of the poet-as-prophet to articulate the position of the poet vis-à-vis the geopolitical spaces she …
March's Poetry And National Identity In Nineteenth-Century Catalonia, Alice E. Popowich
March's Poetry And National Identity In Nineteenth-Century Catalonia, Alice E. Popowich
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "March's Poetry and National Identity in Nineteenth-century Catalonia" Alice E. Popowich investigates the role Ausiàs March's (1397-1459) oeuvre played in the creation of a distinct national identity of nineteenth-century Catalonia. The sociopolitical implications of renaixença and the romantic notion of Volksgeist are employed to situate renewed interest in March's poetry, while the study of reprints from the period allow reflections on the manipulation of March's celebrity in order to move political agendas forward in the establishment of the identity and culture of Catalonia. Popowich postulates that March's poetry influenced nineteenth-century literary rhetoric and politics whereby a regional …
Fiction, Film, Painting, And Comparative Literature, Ramona L. Ceciu
Fiction, Film, Painting, And Comparative Literature, Ramona L. Ceciu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Fiction, Film, Painting, and Comparative Literature" Ramona L. Ceciu proposes a view of comparative literature as a "language in a process of ascertaining its proper grammar." She argues that like any language in order to survive, comparative literature must allow for a constant rejuvenation of its vocabulary and methods it must keep an "open" structure that would accommodate fresh extra-methodological approaches through a procedure of re-invention and expansion. Ceciu posits that in this process the comparatist's "objective creativity" plays a crucial role and draws on Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek's concept of a "new comparative literature" and applies …

Bringing Clean Energy To The Base Of The Pyramid: The Interplay Of Business Models, Technology, And Local Context, Emily Albi, Andrew E. Lieberman
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Social enterprises are providing affordable energy and environmentally sustainable energy to a small but growing percentage of the four billion people living on less than $2,000/year. Santa Clara University’s Global Social Benefit Incubator (GSBITM) has worked with over 60 of these enterprises and profiled them on its Energy Map website. Based on this direct experience and associated research, the authors conclude that it is the interplay among innovative business models, quality technologies tailored to localized energy markets, and appropriate interfacing with local ecosystems that allows social enterprises to go to scale. This conclusion is supported by a review of prominent …
Reconceptualizing Cultural Competence: White Placeling De-/Reterritorialization Within Teacher Education, Melissa Winchell
Reconceptualizing Cultural Competence: White Placeling De-/Reterritorialization Within Teacher Education, Melissa Winchell
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
This ethnography reconceptualizes the paradigm of cultural competence used within the literature on teacher education to describe the multicultural learning of White teacher candidates. Within the cultural competence framework, White learning is problematic, dichotomously defined, and fixed. The binary of competence/incompetence established by this paradigm has recently been questioned within the literature as deficit-based and in conflict with postmodern, critical theories of learning and teaching espoused by multicultural education espouses. This study of the researcher's multicultural education class at a private, religious, four-year undergraduate college on the East Coast of the United States used co-constructed pedagogical practices--including a co-constructed community …
Crater Detection Via Genetic Search Methods To Reduce Image Features, Joseph Paul Cohen
Crater Detection Via Genetic Search Methods To Reduce Image Features, Joseph Paul Cohen
Graduate Masters Theses
Recent approaches to crater detection have been inspired by face detection's use of gray-scale texture features. Using gray-scale texture features for supervised machine learning crater detection algorithms provides better classification of craters in planetary images than previous methods. When using Haar features it is typical to generate thousands of numerical values from each candidate crater image. This magnitude of image features to extract and consider can spell disaster when the application is an entire planetary surface. One solution is to reduce the number of features extracted and considered in order to increase accuracy as well as speed. Feature subset selection …
Transcultural Literature And Contemporary World Literature(S), Arianna Dagnino
Transcultural Literature And Contemporary World Literature(S), Arianna Dagnino
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Transcultural Literature and Contemporary World Literature(s)" Arianna Dagnino argues that within the emerging field of transcultural literary studies and despite the inevitable issues raised by categorization, we may classify transcultural literature within the wider domain of world literature(s). Dagnino presents a brief overview of the growing importance of a transcultural perspective in the fields of (comparative) cultural studies and literary studies and proceeds by outlining the main contours of transcultural literary theory and its main differences in respect to (im)migrant and postcolonial literary theories. Further, Dagnino analyzes the contemporary understanding of the field of world literature(s) and …
From Cultural Third-Worldism To The Literary World-System, Jernej Habjan
From Cultural Third-Worldism To The Literary World-System, Jernej Habjan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "From Cultural Third-Worldism to the Literary World-System" Jernej Habjan links the debate on Franco Moretti's distant reading to the debate on Fredric Jameson's "third world culture." In and around this debate, Aijaz Ahmad both critiqued close reading and rejected Jameson's "Third-Worldism." What Jameson's and Ahmad's interventions into literary theory meant at the end of the real-socialist alternative and what Moretti's meant at the end of the US-American alternative to real-socialism, a synoptic reading of all three interventions might help achieve at the end of what seemed the European alternative to the US-American alternative.
