Impacts From Winter–Early Spring Elk Grazing In Foothills Rough Fescue Grassland, Tanya M. Thrift, Tracy K. Mosley, Jeffrey C. Mosley
Impacts From Winter–Early Spring Elk Grazing In Foothills Rough Fescue Grassland, Tanya M. Thrift, Tracy K. Mosley, Jeffrey C. Mosley
Western North American Naturalist
Foothills rough fescue (Festuca campestris) grasslands provide important foraging habitat for wildlife and livestock in the northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. Foothills rough fescue is sensitive to grazing during late spring–early summer but is believed to be more tolerant of grazing during winter–early spring. We evaluated vegetation and soil impacts from long-term winter–early spring grazing at 2 intensities (HG = heavy grazing, LG = light grazing). We studied a foothills rough fescue grassland in west central Montana, USA, that had been grazed almost exclusively by Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) during winter–early spring for …
Comparative Literature, (Comparative) Cultural Studies, Aesthetic Education, And The Humanities, Sonja Stojmenska-Elzeser
Comparative Literature, (Comparative) Cultural Studies, Aesthetic Education, And The Humanities, Sonja Stojmenska-Elzeser
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Comparative Literature, (Comparative) Cultural Studies, Aesthetic Education, and the Humanities" Sonja Stojmenska-Elzeser discusses comparative literature in the context of cultural studies and aesthetic education. Her starting point is the complexity of comparative literature as an academic discipline propelled by intellectual curiosity for what lies across the barriers which stand in the way of understanding and enjoying creative acts of all kinds everywhere and at all times. Literary and artistic investigations which focus on aesthetic values lead us towards general aesthetics, analyses which situate the arts and literature in context with little regard for aesthetic criteria take us …

Utilizing Gis To Examine The Relationship Between State Renewable Portfolio Standards And The Adoption Of Renewable Energy Technologies, Chelsea Schelly, Jessica Price
Utilizing Gis To Examine The Relationship Between State Renewable Portfolio Standards And The Adoption Of Renewable Energy Technologies, Chelsea Schelly, Jessica Price
Department of Social Sciences Publications
In the United States, there is no comprehensive energy policy at the federal level. To address issues as diverse as climate change, energy security, and economic development, individual states have increasingly implemented Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPSs), which mandate that utility providers include a specified amount of electricity from renewable energy sources in their total energy portfolios. Some states have included incentives for individual energy technologies in their RPS, such as solar electric (also called photovoltaic or PV technology). Here, we use GIS to visualize adoption of RPSs and electricity generation from renewable energy sources in the US and examine changes …

Floristic Composition, Diversity And Structure Of The Kimboza Forest In Morogoro Region, Tanzania, David S. Kacholi
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Kimboza forest reserve in Morogoro region, is an important biodiversity hotspot among the Eastern Arc forests of Tanzania. High population pressure and encroachment threatens its conservation values. This is based on a study which aimed at investigating the composition, diversity, and structure of the tree community in the forest. All trees with DBH ≥ 10cm were inventoried from 0.72ha in a total of 18 plots of 20m × 20m placed randomly from the forest edge to the interior. Most important families and species were determined using familial importance value (FIV) and species importance value (IVI) indices, respectively. Diversity was analyzed …
Using Lagrangian Coherent Structures To Study Coastal Water Quality, Laura A. Fiorentino
Using Lagrangian Coherent Structures To Study Coastal Water Quality, Laura A. Fiorentino
Open Access Dissertations
The accumulation of pollutants near the shoreline can result in low quality coastal water with negative effects on human health. To understand the role of mixing by tidal flows in coastal water quality, we study the nearshore Lagrangian circulation of four recreational beaches in Miami, FL, who, despite close proximity, have varying microbial levels. Specifically, we reveal Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs), i.e., distinguished material curves which shape global mixing patterns and thus act as skeletons of the Lagrangian circulation. We show how these material curves, which shape circulation and mixing patterns, can be used to explain the incongruous states of …

A Review Of Oil Spill History And Management On The North Slope Of Alaska, Amanda Davila
A Review Of Oil Spill History And Management On The North Slope Of Alaska, Amanda Davila
Engineering
Alaska has an abundance of natural resources including oil, natural gas and coal. It is critical to minimize the occurrence of oil spills to ensure protection of Alaska's people and the environment. The objective of this project is twofold. One is to provide a quantification of the number of spills on the North Slope (NS) as well as the number of contaminated sites that are generated, describe the regulatory requirements for the Arctic zone, and discuss cleanup methods. Second is to describe the ADEC regulations as they pertain to terrestrial oil spills. The region of study begins north of Alyeska's …

Catching Companies Who Refuse To Go Green Red-Handed, Wylee Mcgreevy
Honors Theses
Recycling, planting trees, and bringing your own bags to the grocery store are some of the activities people regularly think about when it comes to sustainability. In the grand scheme of life, how much difference can one person make? What if there were stricter standards for corporations which accounted for their emission of pollutants? Environmental Accounting is a branch of accounting that is progressively gaining popularity and has the potential to redefine the standards of sustainability for companies. With integration of past proposals for a carbon tax and a cap and trade system, a new proposal could be formed that …

Fishing Vs. Climate Change: An Example Of Filefish (Thamnaconus Modestus) In The Northern East China Sea, Sukgeun Jung, Hyung Kee Cha
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The main cause of annual fluctuations in catch and species composition of fisheries is usually uncertain, but a prevailing view has been that fishing effects are more critical than environmental variability. Filefish is a good anecdote: many Korean fisheries scientists have attributed the sudden collapse of Korean filefish fisheries in the early 1990s to overfishing, especially by trawl fisheries in the northern East China Sea (NECS). However, interdisciplinary researches have revealed that climate-driven, multi-decadal variability in oceanic conditions impacts both fish and fisheries around the world. To test the two alternative hypotheses (i.e., fishing and climate) as the major cause …

Effects Of Elevated Seawater Co2 On Feed Intake, Oxygen Consumption And Morphology Of Aristotle's Lantern In The Sea Urchin Anthocidaris Crassispina, Guining Wang, Mitsuharu Yagi, Rui Yin, Weiqun Lu, Atsushi Ishimatsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Adult sea urchins, Anthocidaris crassispina, were reared individually in running seawater equilibrated with gas mixtures containing 380 ppm (control), 1,000 ppm or 3,000 ppm CO2, at ambient natural temperature for 140 days to study effects of elevated CO2 on feed intake, fecal production, oxygen consumption, and the morphology of Aristotle’s lantern. Feed intake became significantly lower in the two high CO2 groups than in the control after 90 (1,000 ppm) or 110 (3,000 ppm) days and remained suppressed until the end of the experiment (control, 0.16 ± 0.01 (mean ± SE) g dry wt ind-1 day-1; 1,000 ppm, 0.10 ± …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) was tagged with a pop-up satellite archival tag off the eastern coast of Taiwan and moved in a northerly direction to the East China Sea, where the tag popped-up after 160 days. The total linear displacement was 550 km from deployment to pop-up location and all movements were confined to the East China Sea. After the primarily southward movement during first two months at-liberty, the sailfish changed course after September and began to swim in a northerly direction paralleling the Kuroshio Current. During these horizontal movements, the tagged animal exhibited diel oscillations in its vertical diving …
Environmental Risk Perceptions, Attitudes, And Behaviors: A Study Of College Students Living In A Risk Society, Julia Spring Pei
Environmental Risk Perceptions, Attitudes, And Behaviors: A Study Of College Students Living In A Risk Society, Julia Spring Pei
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This present study examines the relationships between environmental risk perceptions and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors within the theory of the risk society. This quantitative study was conducted online, with a sample size of 218 undergraduate college students from James Madison University. Environmental risks were measured at the societal and individual levels, as well as within five separate risk categories. As expected, I found positive relationships between these risks and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors, however the relationships between individual and societal risk perceptions were different than I anticipated. Where I expected individual risk perceptions to drive both pro-environmental behaviors and attitudes, …
Development Of Mathematical Model For Abiotic Stresses And Cotton Fiber Quality, Suresh Bajirao Lokhande
Development Of Mathematical Model For Abiotic Stresses And Cotton Fiber Quality, Suresh Bajirao Lokhande
Theses and Dissertations
Abiotic stresses cause extensive losses to agriculture production worldwide. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is an important fiber crop grown widely in subtropical region where temperature, water and nutrients are the common factors limiting crop production. Such losses could be more severe in the future climate as intensity and frequency of those stresses are projected to increase. The overall goal of this study was to evaluate effects of abiotic stresses on cotton reproductive performance and develop functional algorithms for fiber properties in response to different stress factors. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of temperature, water, and nitrogen in …

What We Owe Our Children: Building A Healthier Houston Region, Jay Blazek Crossley
What We Owe Our Children: Building A Healthier Houston Region, Jay Blazek Crossley
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The mission of Houston Tomorrow is to improve the quality of life for all the people of the Houston. However, we have an overarching concern for protecting the futures of the children of the Houston region.
The Houston region needs to grow more connected by transit, walking, and biking with a focus on access to our major centers and attractions. We need safer streets, better access to healthy food options, and options for low-carbon lifestyles in walkable, urban, mixed-use areas. We need more people involved in regional planning and major decisions that will dictate the options of future generations.
