Perceptions Of Disaster Risk And Vulnerability In Rural Texas, Andrew J. Prelog, Lee M. Miller Dec 2013

Perceptions Of Disaster Risk And Vulnerability In Rural Texas, Andrew J. Prelog, Lee M. Miller

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Rural areas are uniquely vulnerable to a variety of hazards given their social and economic composition. Economic reliance on agriculture and natural resource extraction increases vulnerability to certain types of natural hazards such as drought, wildfires, and floods. Moreover, rural communities often lack adequate resources to prepare for and respond to disasters. Using data from the Texas Rural Survey, the U.S. Census, and the Spatial Hazards Events and Losses Database for the United States; this research explores questions related to risk perception, vulnerability to disaster, and perceptions of community efficacy in a rural context. Results indicate that rural Texans show …

The Role Of Ict In Scaling Up The Impact Of Social Enterprises, Ramon Fisac-Garcia, Manuel Acevedo-Ruiz, Ana Moreno-Romero, Thane Kreiner Dec 2013

The Role Of Ict In Scaling Up The Impact Of Social Enterprises, Ramon Fisac-Garcia, Manuel Acevedo-Ruiz, Ana Moreno-Romero, Thane Kreiner

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can help social enterprises and other organizations working on global sustainability issues and in the human development sector in general scale their social impact. The flexibility, dynamism, and ubiquity of ICTs make them powerful tools for improving relationships among organizations and their beneficiaries, multiplying the effects of action against many, if not all, aspects of global unsustainability, including poverty and exclusion. The scaling of social impact occurs in two different dimensions. On one hand, ICTs can increase the value proposition of a program or action (depth scaling) in different ways: providing accurate and fast needs …

Ambientalismos De La Vida Cotidiana: Políticas De Coalición, Reproducción Social Y Justicia Ambiental, Giovanna Di Chiro

Environmental Studies Faculty Works

This paper examines the intersectional, coalition politics forged by activists in US environmental justice and women's rights organisations. This coalitional politics articulates environmental and feminist concerns and rejects the limitations of a narrow-focused politics in favour of a more strategic, relational vision of social and environmental change. Framed by the Marxist-feminist concept of “social reproduction”, the analysis addresses the complex ways that globalised capitalism has transformed state and corporate responsibilities for social reproduction. The neoliberal policies of privatisation and deregulation have eroded the assurance of a liveable wage, affordable healthcare, decent education, breathable air, and clean water. Drawing on several …

Plight Of Black Farmers In The Context Of Usda Farm Loan Programs: A Research Agenda For The Future, Shakara S. Tyler, Eddie A. Moore

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Black farmers remain an underdeveloped topic in academic literature. This historical study used a historical research methodology to assess the plight of Black farmers in the context of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) farm loan programs and offered an array of future research recommendations. We investigated the severity of the plight of Black farmers in the context of USDA farm loan programs with an emphasis on effective and responsive leadership in relation to four elements: 1) legislative initiatives, 2) policy initiatives, 3) USDA structure and delivery systems, and the 4) Pigford v. Glickman class action and consent decree. We …

A Framework For Identifying Appropriate Sub-Regions For Ecosystem-Based Management In Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coastal And Marine Environments, Jennifer Sloan Ziegler

Theses and Dissertations

Nearly half of the population of the United States lives in coastal regions, and millions of visitors from across the nation and world enjoy the coasts every year. Coastal and marine areas provide for recreation, economic activities essential for the financial health of the nation, and vital ecological services. As they provide so many benefits to the U.S., it is vital to protect and preserve the coastal and ocean areas from the increasing, competing demands they are facing. In order to protect and preserve these complex systems, a comprehensive approach incorporating science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences should be taken; …

Protecting The " House Beautiful" : Eco-Consciousness In The Victorian Novel, Margaret Kennedy Dec 2013

Protecting The " House Beautiful" : Eco-Consciousness In The Victorian Novel, Margaret Kennedy

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation discusses how literary writers of the Victorian age render toxicity and toxic behaviors visible in order to encourage reform, as well as offering models of healthy environmental engagement. This literary trend reveals what I call a rising eco-consciousness, the awareness of our relationship to the environment and the exchanges between human and nonhuman. This project emphasizes the novel, which offers a rich ground of inquiry by looking at a set of characters interacting with a space over time; in other words, it focuses on how authors mapped a complete ecology into their fiction, participating in a genre that …

Mitigating Barriers To Civic Engagement For Low-Income, Minority Youth Ages 13-18: Best Practices From Environmental Youth Conferences, Haco Hoang Dec 2013

Mitigating Barriers To Civic Engagement For Low-Income, Minority Youth Ages 13-18: Best Practices From Environmental Youth Conferences, Haco Hoang

Journal of Youth Development

Several studies indicate that there is a civic engagement gap for low-income, minority youth even though they reside in communities grappling with deteriorating social, environmental and economic conditions. Using the annual Environmental Youth Conference (EYC) in Los Angeles as a case study, this article offers best practices for identifying: 1) factors that foster civic engagement among low-income, minority youth ages 13-18, and 2) strategies to mobilize the targeted youth populations on environmental issues. Los Angeles is a useful case study because it is a large and demographically diverse city facing extreme environmental challenges due to its significant agricultural and industrial …

Environmental Beliefs And Concern About Animal Welfare: Exploring The Connections, Catherine A. Faver Dec 2013

Environmental Beliefs And Concern About Animal Welfare: Exploring The Connections, Catherine A. Faver

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

An online survey examined environmental beliefs and concern about animal welfare among 105 social work students in the U.S.- Mexico border region. Environmental beliefs were measured using items from the revised New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Scale (Dunlap, Van Liere, Mertig, & Jones, 2000). Higher concern about animal welfare was significantly related to three dimensions of the revised NEP Scale: (1) belief in the fragility of nature's balance, (2) belief in the possibility ofan ecological crisis, and (3) rejection of the notion that humans have a right to dominate nature (anti-anthropocentrism). The findings suggest that by making explicit connections between the …

A Critical Spatial Econometric Counter Analysis Of The Impact Of New Toxic Facilities On Local Wages, Clinton E. Davis Dec 2013

A Critical Spatial Econometric Counter Analysis Of The Impact Of New Toxic Facilities On Local Wages, Clinton E. Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Hegemonic assumptions and industry claims regarding the benefits of new toxic industrial facilities on local wages are tested and challenged. Analysis is performed by applying GIScience and Spatial Econometric methods within a critical framework. A call is made to develop more broadly the practice of Counter Analysis, which is presented as an analogue of Counter-Mapping that repurposes Spatial Analytic methods for the pursuit of critical research agendas.

Geospatial Framework For The Use Of Natural Resource Extraction In Public Private Partnerships, Juan De Dios Barrios Dec 2013

Geospatial Framework For The Use Of Natural Resource Extraction In Public Private Partnerships, Juan De Dios Barrios

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Resources for the maintenance and expansion of existing highway infrastructure are scarce. Public Private Partnerships (PPP) are feasible solutions to the concern of lagging investment. PPP are increasingly used for the procurement of services and goods, because of their flexibility and ability to channel private resources. This research addresses the possible implementation of a barter approach in Public Private Partnerships (PPP), which includes natural resources for trade model to offset costs.;Federal law permits the extraction of coal when it is a byproduct of the construction process, coal which under normal circumstances would not be economically feasible to extract. West Virginia …

Sustainability Curriculum Inventory And Literacy Assessment: The Influence Of Values On Knowledge Of And Perceived Importance Of Sustainability Components, David James Drogos Dec 2013

Sustainability Curriculum Inventory And Literacy Assessment: The Influence Of Values On Knowledge Of And Perceived Importance Of Sustainability Components, David James Drogos

Theses

The incorporation of sustainability education and sustainable practices in higher education serves several purposes. It prepares students for work in sustainability-focused professions, fosters environmentally responsible behavior in individuals, and helps to reduce the ecological impacts of the operational aspects of educational institutions. However, contemporary definitions of sustainability, which consider social, political, ecological, and economic influences on the environment, complicate educational initiatives. Distinct educational departments often consider sustainability through their specialized lens. Trans-disciplinary initiative must be enacted in order for sustainability education to reach its full potential. This paper outlines the results of an electronically administered faculty sustainability curriculum inventory as …

Spatiotemporal Patterns And Socioeconomic Contexts Of Vegetative Cover In Altamira City, Brazil, Scott Hetrick, Rinku Roy Chowdhury, Eduardo Brondizio, Emilio Moran Dec 2013

Spatiotemporal Patterns And Socioeconomic Contexts Of Vegetative Cover In Altamira City, Brazil, Scott Hetrick, Rinku Roy Chowdhury, Eduardo Brondizio, Emilio Moran

Geography

Ecosystem services provided by urban vegetation can ameliorate problems common to urban environments while improving the quality of life of urban residents. Much research in urban ecology has analyzed urban environmental dynamics in the global north; rapidly urbanizing areas in the global south have not received commensurate attention. The land cover dynamics of mid-sized cities in the global south remain under-explored in particular. In this article, we investigate the spatial patterns and socioeconomic contexts of urban vegetation in Altamira, Brazil, a mid-sized but rapidly expanding city in the Amazon. Using time series remotely sensed imagery, we profile changes in urban …

African-American Land Loss And Sustainable Forestry In The Southeast: An Analysis Of The Issues, Opportunities, And Gaps, Colmore S. Christian, Rory Fraser, Amadou Diop Dec 2013

African-American Land Loss And Sustainable Forestry In The Southeast: An Analysis Of The Issues, Opportunities, And Gaps, Colmore S. Christian, Rory Fraser, Amadou Diop

Journal of Extension

African-Americans' connection to the land is rapidly disappearing, and with it goes the cultural, political, and socio-economic capital that has helped this population, especially in southern states. There has been a severe decline in black landownership since 1910, resulting in rural counties with predominantly black populations becoming pockets of enduring poverty. Judicious investments in efforts to solve black land loss may lead to solutions to a larger problem: engagement of non-industrial private forestland owners in sustainable land management. Strengthening black forest-based communities as places to invest and live can build on this rich Southern heritage.

Environmental Studies and Sciences

Strong feedback between global biodiversity loss and persistent, extreme rural poverty are major challenges in the face of concurrent food, energy, and environmental crises. This paper examines the role of industrial agricultural intensification and market integration as exogenous socio-ecological drivers of biodiversity loss and poverty traps in Latin America. We then analyze the potential of a food sovereignty framework, based on protecting the viability of a diverse agroecological matrix while supporting rural livelihoods and global food production. We review several successful examples of this approach, including ecological land reform in Brazil, agroforestry, milpa, and the uses of wild varieties in …

With Green In Mind: Formative Influences On Ecological Mindedness, Shannon Burgert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the formative experiences that nurture ecological habits of mind in youth. The study builds on the ecological habits of mind defined by Moroye and Ingman: caring, a sense of interconnectedness, and ecological integrity. A combination of methods was used in this study: in-depth phenomenologically based interviewing, and educational criticism and connoisseurship. Data collection included two interviews each with five teenagers, one interview each with the teens' mothers, photographing of artifacts, and a focus group with six additional teenagers. Observations and interpretations were filtered through ecological and aesthetic lenses.

Several key findings emerged. First, it is proposed that …

Introduction To Empowered Partnerships: Community-Based Participatory Action Research For Environmental Justice, Christopher M. Bacon, Saneta Devuono-Powell, Mary Louise Frampton, Tony Lopresti, Camille Pannu

Environmental Studies and Sciences

This article introduces a special section on empowered partnerships that deepens a dialogue initiated during the 2010 symposium titled EmPowered Partnerships: Community-Based Participatory Action Research for Environmental Justice. The articles in this section will be divided between issues 1 and 2 of the Journal. After briefly reviewing the definitions and the steps associated with community-based participatory action research (CBPAR), we identify the synergies connecting the underlying principles and values of the environmental justice (EJ) movement and CBPAR. The principles-based comparison is part of an ongoing effort to craft a framework that produces research partnerships that are simultaneously more responsive to …
