“We Found Ourselves”—Music And Identity Among The Chinese American Diaspora In Miami, Yiyu Zhang
“We Found Ourselves”—Music And Identity Among The Chinese American Diaspora In Miami, Yiyu Zhang
Open Access Theses
Chinese American communities have been part of the United States since the 19th century. Presently, their high rates of immigration have made them one of this country’s fastest growing communities. However, in Miami, only 0.3% of the population are Chinese Americans. In this local setting, music serves, in the words of Su Zheng, as an important “signifier that produces complex cultural meanings.” Because traditional music forms one of the most significant aspects of music in China, it is critical to explore the extent to which Chinese American musical culture has developed and changed. This thesis discusses the function of Chinese …
Material Geography, Mountains, And A-Nationalism In Thurman's The Blacker The Berry, Stephanie Jean Burns
Material Geography, Mountains, And A-Nationalism In Thurman's The Blacker The Berry, Stephanie Jean Burns
Theses and Dissertations
Scholars over the last two decades or so have become increasingly interested in methods of interpreting history, society, and literature that do not rely on nationalistic paradigms. One vein of the transnational analytic trend is interested not only in the multiplicity of cultural geographies but also in the materiality of geography. Such critical work is extremely helpful in challenging myopic nationalist readings; yet the materiality of geography used as a theoretical lens has even greater potential. Using geographical formations as a basis for literary analysis can yield a theoretical base that has nothing to do with the borders of nations …

Peruvian Trajectories Of Sociocultural Transformation, Daniel Paracka, Ernesto Silva
Peruvian Trajectories Of Sociocultural Transformation, Daniel Paracka, Ernesto Silva
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The story of Peru presents a continuous trajectory of sociocultural transformation where one civilization appropriates, borrows, and builds on the accomplishments of the previous often creating something new and unique. During the Year of Peru program KSU's faculty and students had the opportunity to learn in depth about Peru's rich history, culture, and modern society. They learned about a country rich in archeological discovery and human history, a story that does not simply begin with the Inca Empire, as the Inca were just one in a long line of powerful ancient civilizations (Chavin, Wari, Nazca, Moche, etc.) that previously ruled …

Refugee Reflections: A Focus On The Lived Experiences Of African Refugees Resettling In Michigan, Diane Roushangar
Refugee Reflections: A Focus On The Lived Experiences Of African Refugees Resettling In Michigan, Diane Roushangar
Masters Theses
Refugee resettlement is often observed by focusing on external indicators of integration such as employment and English proficiency. What is often ignored is the multi-faceted process refugees experience in regard to the emotions that occur during these transitions of resettlement. Emotional stressors include financial concerns, work-related issues, a lack of adequate counseling services and ESL support that can all lead to increased anxiety. This paper examines the process of resettlement that northeast African and sub-Saharan African refugees have experienced including issues of unsafe working conditions, changing gender roles, and a lack of adequate time for adjusting to the culture.

Basque Immigration In The United States, William A. Douglass
Basque Immigration In The United States, William A. Douglass
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
This article was adapted from a talk presented at the Mugaz Gaindi Basque Studies Conference in New York City at Columbia University, as part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the New York Basque Club. It provides a historical overview of the three phases of Basque emigration during the colonial, modern and post-modern eras generally, and within the context of the United States specifically. The article contrasts the immigrant experience of the Basques of the rural American West with the urban, cosmopolitan experience of the New York Basques, as it probes the recent transformation or cultural watershed …

Evolving Chineseness, Ethnicity And Business: The Making Of The Ethnic Chinese As A ‘Market-Dominant Minority’ In Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon
Evolving Chineseness, Ethnicity And Business: The Making Of The Ethnic Chinese As A ‘Market-Dominant Minority’ In Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The ethnic Chinese in Indonesia play a very significant role in the nation’s economy. Their dominance in the Indonesian economy is often seen as disproportionate to their numbers, as reflected in the popular assertion that “the Chinese constitute only 3.5 percent of the population but control 70 percent of Indonesia’s economy”. In the New York Times bestseller, World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability, Amy Chua (2004) identified Chinese Indonesians as one of the “ market-dominant minorities” in the world. Her book highlights the double bind of free market democracy: it privileges certain …

Scottish And Ukrainian Nationalism: A Comparative Study, Rostyslav Hrynkiv
Scottish And Ukrainian Nationalism: A Comparative Study, Rostyslav Hrynkiv
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is essentially a study of similarities and differences between the development of Scottish and Ukrainian nationalisms in the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, analyzing the role of the ideology in successful proclamation and maintaining of the Ukrainian independence, as well as determining the perspectives and vitality of the idea of Scottish independence with concentration on three major components of sovereignty: political, economic, and cultural. Important for this analysis is also the investigation of effectiveness of the major nationalist parties--the SNP in Scotland, and Rukh and Svoboda in Ukraine.
Singapore, State Nationalism, And The Production Of Diaspora, Cheryl Narumi Naruse
Singapore, State Nationalism, And The Production Of Diaspora, Cheryl Narumi Naruse
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Singapore, State Nationalism, and the Production of Diaspora" Cheryl Narumi Naruse examines The Straits Times series "Singaporean Abroad" and analyzes how conceptions of national time, space, and community are restructured by state concerns of economic survival within the era of globalization. In "Singaporean Abroad," readers find a curious amalgamation of feature writing, travel writing, and advertising about cosmopolitan, transnationally connected citizens of Singapore. Naruse shows how positive representations of overseas Singaporeans as "national heroes" reflected in the content of the series evidences efforts by the Government of Singapore to refashion cultural values and to advance beyond national …

Bosnian Immigrants: An Analysis Of The Bosnian Community's Influence On The Cultural Landscape Of Bowling Green, Ky, Nathan Jess Cary
Bosnian Immigrants: An Analysis Of The Bosnian Community's Influence On The Cultural Landscape Of Bowling Green, Ky, Nathan Jess Cary
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Diasporas have been occurring for thousands of years, and today globalization has facilitated the quick rate at which diasporas occur on a global scale. Diasporas entail the mass movement of refugees across international borders, and diasporic peoples today now find themselves journeying across oceans and continents to the safety of host cities in a matter of weeks or days. My research analyzes the effects that Bosnian immigrants have had on the cultural landscape of Bowling Green, Kentucky. When people move, they bring their cultures with them, and this type of cultural diffusion impacts the landscape of the host cities. As …

The Poetics And Politics Of Afro-Cuban Carnival, Emily A. Maguire
The Poetics And Politics Of Afro-Cuban Carnival, Emily A. Maguire
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Thomas F. Anderson’s nuanced and meticulously researched study adds to recent scholarship on Afrocubanismo as it sheds new light on a previously unexplored group of texts: poems dealing with Cuban carnival celebrations. By looking at poems about comparsas published between 1916 and 1950, Anderson’s book illuminates the ways in which race and national identity were being negotiated – both on the page and in the street – during Cuba’s first decades as a nation. Even as these poems about comparsas chronicle the arrival and development of Afrocubanismo as an artistic movement, they also reveal the reservations and inconsistencies in writers’ …
A Comparative Study Of The United States Response To Haiti's 2010 Earthquake And Indonesia's Indian Ocean Tsunami In 2004, Yineth Sanchez
A Comparative Study Of The United States Response To Haiti's 2010 Earthquake And Indonesia's Indian Ocean Tsunami In 2004, Yineth Sanchez
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The 2010 Haitian Earthquake resulted in approximately 220,500 casualties and 1.8 million people displaced. Similarly, the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 caused catastrophic effects in the southeast region of the globe devastating more than twelve countries in less than ten minutes. In Indonesia alone, the tsunami caused 225,000 deaths and left 1.7 million individuals displaced. Both of these disasters were regarded as national emergencies for their respective countries. During the initial recovery period, Haiti and Indonesia faced serious relief challenges that led them to ask the international community for assistance. As one of the major global contributors of aid in …
A Novel Method Of 3d Reconstruction Of Mitochondrial Morphology In Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Jonathan Romanes
A Novel Method Of 3d Reconstruction Of Mitochondrial Morphology In Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease, Jonathan Romanes
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Mutations in Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) and Presenilin 1 and 2 (PS1, PS2) proteins underlie the progression of familial Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques are the hallmark of AD. The disease mechanism remains elusive, however, mounting data indicate implication of mitochondrial dysfunction and energetic stress early in disease progression. We have previously demonstrated that loss of mitochondrial motility observed in embryonic neurons from APP/PS1 and PS1 transgenic mice was among the earliest abnormalities detected in these animals prior to the loss of mitochondrial function, the onset of memory or neurological phenotype or deposition of amyloid plaques. These …
A Social Interaction Model For The Formation Of Local Hotspots Of Criminal Activity, Dean Gardner
A Social Interaction Model For The Formation Of Local Hotspots Of Criminal Activity, Dean Gardner
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Areas of highly concentrated criminal activity, or hotspots, are a key concern of law enforcement agencies. A large portion of criminal offenses are committed in a relatively small number of these stable zones. We develop a model to study the mechanisms that lead to the formation of these hotspots. In particular we incorporate the contribution of social interactions to the dynamics of the propensity for a criminal agent to act. Hotspots manifest as a form of equilibrium solution of this model. We develop taxonomy of equilibrium solutions based upon the parameters of the model. We explore effectiveness of various strategies …
Agonism In Marine Fish Species, Kory Evans
Agonism In Marine Fish Species, Kory Evans
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The purpose of this experiment was to observe agonistic interactions between juvenile members of the families Haemulidae and Lutjanidae. Both families are salt water fishes whose habitats and diets frequently overlap. Lutjanidae, commonly referred to as snappers, are a critically important commercial and recreational species that are sought after by fishermen worldwide. It is this fishing pressure that is most likely responsible for the decline in global snapper populations.
Traditionally, grunt (Haemulidae) are more abundant than snapper, and it is not entirely understood why. There are notable differences in the behavior of the juvenile members of these two families, with …
