The Role Of Spiritual Formation And Ministry Governance In Developing Mission-Oriented Governing Boards, Allen Schoonover
The Role Of Spiritual Formation And Ministry Governance In Developing Mission-Oriented Governing Boards, Allen Schoonover
Doctor of Ministry
Congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have struggled over the last generation to reach out effectively to new members. This struggle is the byproduct of a changing ministry context leaders are trying to address. By the 1980s, those elements that had fueled the growth of the Lutheran Church the United States throughout the previous century had largely faded. An awareness of these changes and the corresponding decline in membership and contributions has prompted leaders to examine how to reach out more effectively to those outside traditional ethnic and cultural Lutheran enclaves. In order to improve their congregation’s effectiveness, …

The Spatial Modalities Of Evangelical Christian Growth In Sri Lanka: Evangelism, Social Ministry And The Structural Mosaic, Orlando Woods
The Spatial Modalities Of Evangelical Christian Growth In Sri Lanka: Evangelism, Social Ministry And The Structural Mosaic, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper incorporates a melange of ideas into a new understanding of evangelical Christian growth. Existing explanations of growth are well rehearsed within the social sciences, and draw clear distinctions between the characteristics of evangelical organisations and the structural contexts in which they operate. A number of theoretical and empirical assumptions render such explanations applicable in some countries, but not others. Drawing on empirical data from Sri Lanka, I argue that closer examination of the recursive relationship between organisation (agency) and context (structure) will lead to recognition of the fact that growth is a spatially defined process, with evangelical organisations …

Review Essay: Working Evangelicalisms: Deploying Fragmented Theologies In Secular Space, Justin Kh Tse
Review Essay: Working Evangelicalisms: Deploying Fragmented Theologies In Secular Space, Justin Kh Tse
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Over the last three years, three new important books have contributed to critical geographies of American evangelicalism: Jason Dittmer and Tristan Sturm’s Mapping the End Times, Jason Hackworth’s Faith Based, and Justin G. Wilford’s Sacred Subdivisions. Demonstrating that evangelicals are ignored at geographers’ peril in political, economic, and cultural geography, these new books each demonstrate that evangelical usages of space have contemporary salience in secular geopolitical formations, domestic economic policy, and the interpretation of cultural landscapes. Because these three books represent three different subfields in human geography (political, economic, and cultural geography), they can be taken together to critically interrogate …

Social Life And Ritual Practices In An Alaskan Pentecostal Community (The First Assembly Of God, Fairbanks), Nickole Kathren Robarge
Social Life And Ritual Practices In An Alaskan Pentecostal Community (The First Assembly Of God, Fairbanks), Nickole Kathren Robarge
Anthropology
This MA thesis research project focuses on the First Assembly of God Church in Fairbanks, Alaska. It seeks to better understand the implementation of Pentecostal-Charismatic (PC) Christianity in 21st century urban Alaska. While social activism and outreach form a significant portion of the success of Pentecostalism in Alaska (as anywhere else), my research shows that it is also substantially due to the appeal of ritual to newcomers. In particular, I suggest that there are forms of spiritual possession and spirit embodiment that need to be examined in relation to the attractiveness of Pentecostalism in Fairbanks. There is a gap in …

A Plan For Developing An Effective Community Outreach Strategy For Churches In The Northeast, Roscoe Lilly
A Plan For Developing An Effective Community Outreach Strategy For Churches In The Northeast, Roscoe Lilly
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Community outreach is an essential part of a church's mission to be "salt and light" to those around them. Community outreach creates the crucial platform for a church's evangelistic efforts. While many churches want to reach out to their community, few have a clear understanding of how or where to begin. The purpose of this project is to help churches in the Northeast better understand how to increase their community's receptivity to the gospel through a strategic community outreach plan. The project will use NorthStar Church as a case study. It is the aim of this project to demonstrate how …

The Gathering Of The Saints: Noun Or Verb?, Kenneth E. Priddy
The Gathering Of The Saints: Noun Or Verb?, Kenneth E. Priddy
Great Commission Research Journal
This paper examines the question: Who are the saints? In the Old Testament the saints are the people of God, the nation of Israel, specifically those who have genuine faith and are true believers. In the New Testament the saints are the church, those who have been regenerated through the working of the Holy Spirit to be more than members of the visible church, but members of the eternal invisible church as well. In modern times we often speak of the “gathering of the saints.” Both noun and verb uses are included in Scripture and they are essentially distinguished by …

Converting Houses Into Churches: The Mobility, Fission, And Sacred Networks Of Evangelical House Churches In Sri Lanka, Orlando Woods
Converting Houses Into Churches: The Mobility, Fission, And Sacred Networks Of Evangelical House Churches In Sri Lanka, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper I examine the processes and politics associated with the formation of evangelical house churches in Sri Lanka. In doing so, I show how the sacred space of the house church is constructed through the development of sacred networks, which emerge when a group of Christians assemble for prayer and worship. Sacred networks grant the house church an important degree of mobility, but they also encourage church fission. Whilst the house church enables evangelical groups to grow in hostile environments like that of Sri Lanka, it is often a superficial form of growth that is unsustainable in the …
