Nation, Gender, And Identity: Children In The Syrian Revolution 2011, Manal Al-Natour Dec 2013

Nation, Gender, And Identity: Children In The Syrian Revolution 2011, Manal Al-Natour

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines the victimization and role of Syrian children in the Syrian Revolution 2011. I claim that through engaging in a competition to provide a definitive image of the nation, both the regime and the opposition victimize Syrian children. Nevertheless, the art projects undertaken by nonviolence activists have proven to help children heal and to cope with the predicaments brought on them by the crisis. The poetry, paintings, drawings, and songs produced by these children are the best means they have of representing their victimization and their role in the revolution, and communicating their perspectives on the Syrian nation …

The Status Of Women And The Arab Spring, Karen Pimentel Nov 2013

The Status Of Women And The Arab Spring, Karen Pimentel

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The social movement known as the Arab Spring brings together various groups, including educated women, demanding the overthrow of decades-old dictatorial regimes. It begins in Tunisia and then extends to neighboring Arab- speaking countries of North Africa, Egypt and Libya. Similar social, cultural, and economic conditions are conducive to the unfolding of a single social movement across national borders. After the successful overthrow of dictatorships, groups that collaborated in it, clash against each other. Despite the fact that the movement was initiated by middle-class youth advocating a Western-style model of democracy, Muslims succeed in gaining control of ―democratic,‖ majority-rule governments …

An Excerpt From Al-Sayyid Asghar Akbar By Murtedha Gzar, Yasmeen S. Hanoosh Aug 2013

An Excerpt From Al-Sayyid Asghar Akbar By Murtedha Gzar, Yasmeen S. Hanoosh

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The following is a translation of an excerpt from the novel Al-Sayyid Asghar Ak bar (Dar al-Tanwir, 2012) by Iraqi author Murtedha Gzar. This recent work by a young engineer from the southern city of Basra has received considerable attention in literary circles at home and abroad, significantly for the ways in which it departs from the mimetic norms of social realism that were found in the established narratological models of the pre-2003 U.S. occupation era, such as the varieties cultivated in the 1960s and 1970s in Iraq by seminal authors lik e Gha’ib Ṭu`mah Farman, Mahdi Isa al-Saqr, and …

Building A Community Among Early Arab Immigrants In Milwaukee, 1890s–1960s, Enaya Othman Jul 2013

Building A Community Among Early Arab Immigrants In Milwaukee, 1890s–1960s, Enaya Othman

Arabic Languages and Literatures

Like other immigrant groups that came to Wisconsin, most of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Arab immigrants came to the United States for economic betterment, as well as political and religious freedom. From the start, most immigrants intended to work for a few years and then return to their villages and towns after accumulating some wealth, although that original goal evolved over time as many early immigrants found success in their new country. Most of the community originally settled in a tightly knit community located in the Third Ward area. Over time, the settlement pattern of the Arab …

Love In A Time Of Trauma: Imagining Queer Female Sexualities In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Stephanie M. Selvick Jun 2013

Love In A Time Of Trauma: Imagining Queer Female Sexualities In Post-Apartheid South Africa, Stephanie M. Selvick

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation analyzes competing discourses of sexuality in contemporary South Africa, and contributes to a much-needed nascent critical conversation engaging postcolonial studies, African studies, and sexuality studies. South Africa’s 1996 constitution is celebrated as the most progressive in the world in terms of gender and sexuality, but this legal achievement is belied by the on-going, much-publicized rape crisis -- including the “corrective” rape of lesbians. This crisis has occurred in the context of an AIDS epidemic and government denial of the increase of both rape and AIDS. I argue that authors and artists respond to this crisis by representing stigmatized …

Corpus-Based Analysis Of Three Arabic Adversative Conjunctions In Current Egyptian Newspapers, Shaemaa Essa Jun 2013

Corpus-Based Analysis Of Three Arabic Adversative Conjunctions In Current Egyptian Newspapers, Shaemaa Essa

Theses and Dissertations

Conjunctions function as cohesive and text building elements in Modern Standard Arabic. They play various semantic and discursive roles at different textual levels: phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph and discourse (Al-Batal, 1990). This study investigates the linguistic behavior of three Arabic adversative conjunctions, namely "innam", baynam, and bal. It draws its data mainly from the sub-corpus of Shruq Columns (2,067,137 words) in the Arabicourpus. A random sample has been collected for "innam" and bal, covering 50% of their instances in the corpus. On the other hand, all the instances of baynam with the adversative meaning have been analyzed due to the …

Contemporary Mosque Architecture In Turkey, Samaa Moustafa Jun 2013

Contemporary Mosque Architecture In Turkey, Samaa Moustafa

Theses and Dissertations

Early in the twentieth century in a quest for national identity and a need for modernity - both are products of the west - Turkey among many other Islamic countries embarked on a massive building project as part of its broader process of modernization. While new forms and styles were incorporated to mirror the modern and civilized vision of the new nation-state, the architecture of the mosque remained condservative with a few exceptions which started to appear only in the last quarter of the same century. The architecture of the medieval mosque has enriched our minds with knowledge about Islamic …

Factors Affecting Elementary Teachers’ Decision To Integrate Information And Communication Technologies (Ict) In An Egyptian International School, Shaimaa Mohamed Hafez Jun 2013

Factors Affecting Elementary Teachers’ Decision To Integrate Information And Communication Technologies (Ict) In An Egyptian International School, Shaimaa Mohamed Hafez

Theses and Dissertations

Integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a desired educational outcome. Schools invest substantially in technological hardware and software as well as teacher training to encourage ICT integration. However, the results often do not match the investment. The current case study examined the factors that affect elementary teachers’ decision, in an Egyptian international school, to integrate ICT in education with the aim of using the results to inform future ICT related decisions, policies and practices at this particular school. Using a modified form of participatory evaluation (Cousins & Whitmore, 1998; Zukoski & Luluquisen, 2002) and Wagner’s and Kegan’s 4 C’s …

Jesus According To Ibn Al-’Arabī And Christian Scholars, Jeong Jae Yoo Jun 2013

Jesus According To Ibn Al-’Arabī And Christian Scholars, Jeong Jae Yoo

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the differences between Islam and Christianity, Islam is the only non-Christian religion in the world, which requires its adherents to believe that Jesus is one of the prophets of God. Ibn al-’Arabī, one of the Sufi mystics of the 12th century, wrote an entire chapter devoted to Jesus in his book, Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam, translated as the Bezels (or Seals) of Wisdom. In this chapter, Jesus is characterized by five names that most clearly explain his attributes. These names are ‘the Spirit of God’, ‘the Word of God’, ‘the Breath of God’, ‘the Mercy of God’, and ‘the Slave of …

Beyond The Stated Function: Showcasing, Through Everyday Objects, Social Obstacles Imposed On Qatari Female Youth, Kazem Esra May 2013

Beyond The Stated Function: Showcasing, Through Everyday Objects, Social Obstacles Imposed On Qatari Female Youth, Kazem Esra

Theses and Dissertations

This critical design project showcases obstacles that the Qatari culture and society impose on their female youth, hindering them from becoming independent individuals. It critiques the society and its social pressures. The project stimulates people to think by challenging their assumptions and perceptions, specifically social perception and judgment, family authority, and gender favoritism. This is achieved through hybridized accessories that are embedded with a meta-meaning that arouses curiosity, invites questions, and stimulates thoughts. Through the design of these appealing, high quality, and functionally viable everyday accessories, the project aims to communicate the social and cultural forces which impede Qatari female …

The Rise Of Political Islam Can The Turkish Model Be Applied Successfully In Egypt? By Dr Taha Kassem, Taha Kassem May 2013

The Rise Of Political Islam Can The Turkish Model Be Applied Successfully In Egypt? By Dr Taha Kassem, Taha Kassem

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

Although the parliamentary elections run in Egypt in December 2011- January 2012 indicated that Egypt is witnessing an era of political or democratic transformation, they signified the rise of political Islam to authority; the rise which created a lot of debates and posed a lot of questions about the political and economic future of Egypt. The core of these debates circles around these questions: Would Egypt adopt, literally, a rigid pro- Islamic type of rule based on the Islamic Sharia (Islamic Code) or would it adopt a moderate model, like that in Turkey, in its political and economic transformation? Pessimists …

Pre-Service Teachers’ Preferred Methods Of Assessment: A Perspective From Saudi Arabia, Amani K. Hamdan Alghamdi Apr 2013

Pre-Service Teachers’ Preferred Methods Of Assessment: A Perspective From Saudi Arabia, Amani K. Hamdan Alghamdi

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teacher-candidate course assessment is one topic that has not been adequately explored in teacher education literature where pre-service teachers’ voices are rarely heard. Assessment methods in pre-service teacher programs across the world, including in Saudi Arabia, have received little exploration in the literature. This mixed-methods study explored a group of female pre-service teachers (n = 83) enrolled in a Diploma of Education program to identify their preferred method of assessment for their learning. The results showed that these individuals preferred a group assignment, consisting of a written report and an oral presentation, over an individual assignment, consisting of an …

Contesting French Aesthetics Of Space And Nature Enjoyment In Moroccan Travel Writing In The 19th Century, Ahmed Idrissi Alami Mar 2013

Contesting French Aesthetics Of Space And Nature Enjoyment In Moroccan Travel Writing In The 19th Century, Ahmed Idrissi Alami

Artl@s Bulletin

In their travel writings about Europe in the 19th century, Moroccan visitors compare and contrast what they see of the European artistic designs and aesthetic values with experiences from their own native cultures. In this paper, I analyze the discourse and rhetoric about the enjoyment of nature, landscape design and leisure aesthetics as explored in the travel writing of the Moroccan traveler al-‘Amrāwī in his travelogue Tuḥfat al-Malik al-ʿAzīz bimamlakat Bārīz (1860). Here we see a significant engagement between the periphery and the center, from outlying ‘pre-modern’ cultures to the epicenter of Western culture and modernity.

Using Dictogloss To Advance Proficiency And Accuracy In Teaching Arabic, Ghassan Husseinali Mar 2013

Using Dictogloss To Advance Proficiency And Accuracy In Teaching Arabic, Ghassan Husseinali

Dimensions

This study investigates the effectiveness of using dictogloss in making students notice and reproduce key vocabulary and highlighted structural features in a college intermediate level Arabic L2 class. Dictogloss is a technique used in second language classes to make students pay attention to the relationship between form and meaning. Students listened to a short text containing the target form(s) read aloud by the instructor. Students were asked to work in small groups/pairs to reconstruct the original text. Data for this study were obtained from individual student notes, group-generated text reconstructions, and post-dictogloss reflections. The results of this classroom-based investigation show …

The Acquisition Of Morphosyntactic Agreement In The Interlanguage System Of Afl Learners In Ghana, Alhassan Abdur-Rahim Husein Feb 2013

The Acquisition Of Morphosyntactic Agreement In The Interlanguage System Of Afl Learners In Ghana, Alhassan Abdur-Rahim Husein

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the relevance of agreement structures in constructing the interlanguage (IL) system of the L2 learner, not much research has been conducted in this area on Arabic language learners. This study investigated the acquisition of morphosyntactic agreement structures by Arabic as Foreign Language (AFL) learners in Ghana, using the Processability Theory (PT) formulated in Pienemann (1998, 2005). The theory predicts cross-linguistic developmental routes for the acquisition of grammatical structures. A cross-sectional study was performed in order to test the theory. Data were elicited from 15 participants from the University of Ghana, Legon using Grammaticality Judgment Task and Elicited Production Task. …
