Organic Wastewater Chemicals In Silver Bow Creek - Butte To Warm Springs Ponds, Heidi Reid, Katie Hailer, Ph.D., Steve Parker, Ph.D.
2013 Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study is to detail and analyze the distribution, concentration, and loads of 5 organic compounds along Silver Bow Creek in Butte, Montana from the Municipal Wastewater treatment plant to the Warm Springs Ponds. The chemicals analyzed include Carbamazepine (pharmaceutical), Miconazole (fungicide) and three antibiotics – Sulfamethoxazole, Thiabendazole, and Ciprofloxacin.
This project begins a 2 year study to analyze 6 additional compounds (11 compounds total), to develop an effective method to detail and analyze OWCs using Mass Spectrometer/Liquid chromatography system, and to aid in assessment of aquatic health and ongoing restoration work. The EPA method 1694 was …
Insights Into The Timing, Origin, And Deformation Of The Highland Mountains Gneiss Dome In Southwestern Montana, Usa, Lane Markes Boyer
Insights Into The Timing, Origin, And Deformation Of The Highland Mountains Gneiss Dome In Southwestern Montana, Usa, Lane Markes Boyer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Highland Mountains of southwestern Montana offer a unique view of the Archean igneous and metamorphic rocks within the Great Falls tectonic zone (GFTZ). A Paleoproterozoic structural gneiss dome has been interpreted in the southern extent of the Highland Mountains. The ∼ 130km2 of exhumed metamorphic rocks and gneiss dome exposed in the Highland Mountains are the primary focus of this research. The formation of the Highland Mountains gneiss dome is proposed to be directly related to a northwest-side down detachment (the Steels Pass shear zone) that formed during terrane collision along the GFTZ. The field investigation determined foliation …
"3 Simple Words: We The People": Culture, Identity, And The Contentious Politics Of The Contemporary Tea Party Movement In Montana, Stacy Keogh
Sociology ETDs
The Tea Party is a social and political movement urging government accountability, individual fiscal responsibility, and personal liberty as outlined by the United States Constitution. In this dissertation, I examine the cultural components of the Montana Tea Party asking two primary research questions: (1) What are the cultural dynamics of the Tea Party? (2) How does this determine the way the Tea Party engages in contentious politics? I found that the way the Montana Tea Party utilizes the resources of religion to provide a culture structure familiar to participants. It utilizes religious rhetoric to provide familiarity to the nations civil …

Efficacy Of Electronet Fencing For Excluding Coyotes: A Case Study For Enhancing Production Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Marc R. Matchett, Stewart W. Breck, John Callon
Efficacy Of Electronet Fencing For Excluding Coyotes: A Case Study For Enhancing Production Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Marc R. Matchett, Stewart W. Breck, John Callon
USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Reducing coyote (Canis latrans) predation can be an important management objective. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of electronet fencing for excluding coyotes from focal areas on black tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies, measured the effect of fencing on wild-born black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) kit survival, and modeled costs and benefits of fencing. From 27 July to 2 October 2010 in northcentral Montana, USA, we erected and maintained 7.7 km of electronet that enclosed 108 ha on portions of 2 prairie dog colonies. We monitored 2 female ferrets and 6 kits inside exclosures and …
Paying To Play: Supply Management In Montana's Dairy Industry, Laura Ginsburg
Paying To Play: Supply Management In Montana's Dairy Industry, Laura Ginsburg
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Montana’s dairy industry is unique among US states because of its supply management program, which allocates quota to limit how much fluid milk can be produced and sold within the state. The amount of quota is set and price varies with market conditions; therefore, quota adds to a farm’s production costs. This paper presents findings from in-depth interviews with 17 dairy farmers to learn how quota has affected on-farm decision-making and how they perceive the impacts of quota on the statewide industry. Farmers tend to be spilt between those who think it affected their on-farm decisions and those who felt …
Identifying Environmental Factors Influencing Golden Eagle Presence And Reproductive Success, Ross H. Crandall
Identifying Environmental Factors Influencing Golden Eagle Presence And Reproductive Success, Ross H. Crandall
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Declining populations of plant and animal species is a major concern threatening global biodiversity. If we want to conserve threatened species, we must understand the requirements of the species. Recent data suggests Golden Eagle populations in the Western United States are declining. Future threats from expanded energy development, habitat loss and climate change are also a concern. Apparent declines and perceived threats have caused management agencies to classify the Golden Eagle as a species of concern requiring the creation of conservation plans. Yet, an effective conservation plan is dependent on information that is currently lacking. To address this lack of …
The School-To-Prison Pipeline Tragedy On Montana's American Indian Reservations, Melina Healey
The School-To-Prison Pipeline Tragedy On Montana's American Indian Reservations, Melina Healey
Scholarly Works
American Indian adolescents in Montana are caught in a school-to-prison pipeline. They are plagued with low academic achievement, high dropout, suspension and expulsion rates, and disproportionate contact with the juvenile and criminal justice systems. This phenomenon has been well documented in poor, minority communities throughout the country. But it has received little attention with respect to the American Indian population in Montana, for whom the problem is particularly acute. Indeed, the pipeline is uniquely disturbing for American Indian youth in Montana because this same population has been affected by another heartbreaking and related trend: alarming levels of adolescent suicides and …
Dual Enrollment As A Factor For Women Transitioning Into Stem Majors In Montana Two-Year Colleges, Penny Jane Jakes
Dual Enrollment As A Factor For Women Transitioning Into Stem Majors In Montana Two-Year Colleges, Penny Jane Jakes
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The purpose of this non-experimental, descriptive, quantitative study was to describe the impact high school dual enrollment coursework has had on initial enrollment of women with STEM majors in Montana two-year colleges. The study was designed to find whether or not differences existed for access (initial enrollment), persistence (to third semester), and success (associate's degree, certificate, or transfer to a four-year institution within 150% of program length). The literature review highlighted the need for studies to address the issue of few women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) occupations. One goal of dual enrollment in Montana is to ease …
Only From Montana: A Family's Experience Eating Locally, Emily Joan Wendler
Only From Montana: A Family's Experience Eating Locally, Emily Joan Wendler
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This is a 30-minute radio documentary on one family’s experience eating all locally grown food, for two weeks in September of 2012, and two weeks during January 2013. For the project we considered locally grown food as food grown and processed in Montana. If the food was grown here, then left to be processed in another state, it did not count as local. The participants were a family of three from Missoula, Montana—a Mom, Dad, and their 2-year-old son. The point of the project was to answer the question: What is it like for a family, who normally does not …
