Amidst A Culture Of Noise Silence Is Still Golden : A Sociocultural Historical Analysis Of The Pathologization Of Introversion, Sara L. Fudjack

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical thesis explores the phenomenon of introversion, how it has come to be perceived over time in both the United States and various other countries and cultures, and why. This paper seeks to understand how and why the United States has come to value extroverted personality characteristics over introverted ones, and attempts to discover the creation of this value system through a historical analysis of the creation of the definition and meaning of both introversion and extroversion. This thesis utilizes an extensive review of the literature rooted in psychoanalytic theory in order to trace the creation of the definition …

Is Cultural Distance A Determinant Of International Migration Flows? Evidence From Denmark, Germany, And The Netherlands, Roger White Aug 2013

Is Cultural Distance A Determinant Of International Migration Flows? Evidence From Denmark, Germany, And The Netherlands, Roger White

Economics

We examine the relationship between source-destination country cultural differences and international migration flows using data for three immigrant destination countries (i.e., Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands) and a cohort of 66 heterogeneous immigrant source countries during the years 1997-2002. Results obtained from the estimation of our empirical specifications using the Negative Binomial regression technique indicate that, all else equal, cultural distance is negatively related to migration flows and that larger existing immigrant stocks correspond with larger subsequent migration flows. These findings are consistent with the results reported in Belot and Ederveen (2012). Extending the literature, we report that existing immigrant …

Analyzing Functionality Of Landmines And Clearance Depth As A Tool To Define Clearance Methodology, Martin Jebens Jul 2013

Analyzing Functionality Of Landmines And Clearance Depth As A Tool To Define Clearance Methodology, Martin Jebens

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Mine contamination from World War II remains in Skallingen on Denmark’s western coast. Skallingen’s dynamic coastal environment caused the mines to shift in the soil, and time, salt water and soil depth rendered some of the landmines inactive. Comparative digital-terrain models, in addition to surveys and analysis of fuze and detonator functionality, enabled clearance personnel to establish clearance depth and related criteria and facilitated efficient clearance efforts. As a result, the last functional mines were cleared in June 2012 after six years of effort.

Danish Primary Education Accountability – A Conceptual And Organizational Jour-Ney Of Accountability Practices In Danish History Of Education, Christian Ydesen, Karen Egedal Andreasen Jun 2013

Danish Primary Education Accountability – A Conceptual And Organizational Jour-Ney Of Accountability Practices In Danish History Of Education, Christian Ydesen, Karen Egedal Andreasen

Summer Workshop on the Comparative History of School Accountability

In this paper we focus on primary education accountability as a concept and as an organisational practice in Danish history of education. Contemporary policy studies of education often address questions of accountability, but the manifestations of school accountability differ significantly between different national settings. Furthermore, accountability measures and practices actually change the ways and means by which societies approach their cultural edifices in general and their educational systems in particular. In other words accountability measures and practices tend to have a disciplining effect on its surroundings. Hence there is a need to clarify the characteristics and traits connected with the …

Multi-Staged Research At The Denmark Site, A Small Early-Middle Mississippian Town, Scott Paul Hadley Jr. Apr 2013

Multi-Staged Research At The Denmark Site, A Small Early-Middle Mississippian Town, Scott Paul Hadley Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Early-Middle Mississippian settlements in the hinterlands of West Tennessee have largely gone unstudied. The void in settlement data leaves a gap in understanding Early-Middle Mississippian settlements within the Mid-South region. A multi-staged research design at the Denmark Site (40MD85) in Madison County, Tennessee was employed to determine a settlement system at Denmark. Denmark was originally thought to be a Vacant Mound Center that did not support an associated habitation, but topographic mapping, LiDAR data, magnetometry survey, and targeted excavation reveal that the Denmark mound group represents a sizeable settlement.

Dietary Reconstruction In Medieval Holbæk, Denmark Using Dental Microwear And Macrowear, Isotopic Analyses, And Dental Caries, Sara A. Turner Apr 2013

Dietary Reconstruction In Medieval Holbæk, Denmark Using Dental Microwear And Macrowear, Isotopic Analyses, And Dental Caries, Sara A. Turner

Anthropology Theses

The medieval period in Denmark (11th-16th century) was a time of great social and economic change. The current study seeks to analyze dietary patterns of individuals from a medieval site in Holbæk, Denmark who lived during this historically dynamic and tumultuous period. A previous isotopic analysis indicated a mixed terrestrial C3 based diet with varying amounts of marine foods (Jørkov 2007). This study compares the existing isotopic data with collected data from dental microwear, macrowear, and caries in order to provide a more complete picture of diet and subsistence patterns of these individuals during their latter …

A Journey To Denmark In 1928, Anton Gravesen

The Bridge

It is now just 3 months ago that I packed my valise and said goodbye to Askov to make a journey to Denmark. It was with some mixed feelings. Half my life I have lived here and my other half over there in the old country.
