Characterization And Treatment Of A Novel Mouse Model Of Tsc-Associated Autism, Rachel Michelle Reith
Characterization And Treatment Of A Novel Mouse Model Of Tsc-Associated Autism, Rachel Michelle Reith
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a dominant tumor suppressor disorder caused by mutations in either TSC1 or TSC2. The proteins of these genes form a complex to inhibit the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), which controls protein translation and cell growth. TSC causes substantial neuropathology, often leading to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in up to 60% of patients. The anatomic and neurophysiologic links between these two disorders are not well understood. However, both disorders share cerebellar abnormalities. Therefore, we have characterized a novel mouse model in which the Tsc2 gene was selectively deleted from cerebellar Purkinje cells (Tsc2f/-;Cre). …

"Pintu Terlarang"; A Disconcerting Spatial Interpretation Of Urban Dystopia, Bayu Kristianto
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The main character of the film Pintu terlarang (The forbidden door), Gambir, attains success in the art world by making statues of pregnant women. Part of his creative process is to insert dead foetuses into the wombs of the statues. His troubled soul meets a written request for help by a child he encounters in various places. The journey to find the child leads him to a secret door, revealing a terrifying reality of a dehumanized world. The city, commonly characterized by a sense of vastness, is set in opposition to small, enclosed spaces where individuals converse with their utmost …

Sealand, Havenco, And The Rule Of Law, James Grimmelmann
Sealand, Havenco, And The Rule Of Law, James Grimmelmann
Faculty Scholarship
In 2000, a group of American entrepreneurs moved to a former World War II anti-aircraft platform in the North Sea, seven miles off the British coast, and launched HavenCo, one of the strangest start-ups in Internet history. A former pirate radio broadcaster, Roy Bates, had occupied the platform in the 1960s, moved his family aboard, and declared it to be the sovereign Principality of Sealand. HavenCo's founders were opposed to governmental censorship and control of the Internet; by putting computer servers on Sealand, they planned to create a "data haven" for unpopular speech, safely beyond the reach of any other …

Hemp Lime Bio-Composite As A Building Material In Irish Construction, Patrick Daly, Paolo Ronchetti, Tom Woolley Dr
Articles
This report presents the findings of scoping study into the potential application of hemp lime biocomposite as a construction material in Irish context. The research was carried out under STRIVE funding administered under the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) examining the state of play of hemp lime in construction toward assessing its potential application in Ireland.
The research involved a range of methods, mainly qualitative, including significant literature review and extensive collation of data on hemp lime performance and testing data, semi structured interviews and field work / review of key case studies in Ireland, UK and Europe.
The study …

Stuff Happens Colonialism, Archaeology, And National Identity Formation, Faith Lobdell
Theses & ETDs
When the United States and its allies invaded Iraq in 2003, there was a great deal of looting and damage to Iraq's cultural heritage. This caused a great deal of controversy and international condemnation of the failure of pre-war planning agencies and committees to take the possibility of such negative consequences into account. My thesis explores some of the history of the use of archaeology for political purposes, both colonial and national, in attempting to answer the dual questions of why the preservation of cultural heritage is an important issue and for whom.

Sex, Work, And The Feminist Erasure Of Class, Brooke M. Beloso
Sex, Work, And The Feminist Erasure Of Class, Brooke M. Beloso
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In this essay, I trace the contemporary feminist debate on prostitution to the period in which Catharine MacKinnon and Gayle Rubin deemed Marxism inadequate to the task of theorizing women’s oppression. In seeking to surmount this perceived inadequacy, both thinkers counterposed alternative theoretical frameworks for analyzing women’s oppression that nonetheless relied upon certain of Marxism’s central tenets. In a reliance that took the form of strikingly similar translations of Marxism foregrounding what came to be known as radical feminism (in the case of MacKinnon) and queer theory (in the case of Rubin), both theorists problematically render class as, respectively, gender …

Spirited Measures And Victorian Hangovers: Public Attitudes To Alcohol, The Law And Moral Regulation., Henry Yeomans

From alarm about the prospect of ‘twenty-four drinking’ to campaigns for a minimum price per unit, the last decade has shown that alcohol consumption is an inflammatory issue in this country. It has become commonplace to hear that drinking is ‘out of control’ and that it is a new and worsening problem largely unique to Britain. However, comparative research reveals that alcohol consumption in Britain is not unusually high and even a cursory glance at history shows that extreme bouts of alarm about drinking have been common on these shores since at least the eighteenth century. What is at the …

Word Diffusion And Climate Science, R. A. Bentley, P. Garnett, Michael J. O'Brien, W. A. Brock
History Faculty Publications (Archived)
As public and political debates often demonstrate, a substantial disjoint can exist between the findings of science and the impact it has on the public. Using climate-change science as a case example, we reconsider the role of scientists in the information-dissemination process, our hypothesis being that important keywords used in climate science follow "boom and bust" fashion cycles in public usage. Representing this public usage through extraordinary new data on word frequencies in books published up to the year 2008, we show that a classic two-parameter social-diffusion model closely fits the comings and goings of many keywords over generational or …
