Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Did the emergence of social complexity in the Gulf of Georgia, Northwest Coast affect the social learning contexts of technologies? Barbed bone and antler technologies were examined from a Darwinian perspective using Boyd and Richerson's (1985) dual inheritance approach in order to further understand their social learning context. Barbed point attributes were examined for prestige-based indirect (context) bias (Henrich and Henrich 2007), the adoption of cultural traits due to unrelated traits, such as status. The emergence of this form of transmission was expected to emerge with the Developed Northwest Coast pattern (Matson and Coupland 1995). Phylogenetic methods and cluster analyses …

Early Mormon Missionary Activities In Japan, 1901–1924, Reid L. Neilson, R. Lanier Britsch
BYU Studies
Reid L. Neilson, PhD, the managing director of the Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is well known among LDS Asian and Pacific scholars as a gifted and productive editor and bibliographer. His research and writing on the history of the Church in Japan is informative, enlightening, and enriching. Although the topic of missionary work in Japan has been written about by other authors, Neilson's book adds much to what has already been written.
In Early Mormon Missionary Activities in Japan, 1901-1924, Neilson has created one of the few LDS books dealing with Mormon …
Samplers, Sewing And Star Quilts: Changing Federal Policies Impact Native American Education And Assimilation, Lynne Anderson
Samplers, Sewing And Star Quilts: Changing Federal Policies Impact Native American Education And Assimilation, Lynne Anderson
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Illustrating the U.S. federal government's changing policies on the assimilation of Native American children is the role of needlework instruction in the schooling of Indian girls. Described and discussed are three examples of 19th and 20th century policy, with emphasis on the textiles resulting from those policies. Early 19th century policy supported mission schools for Indians. Learning to sew was a valued domestic skill in 19th century female education, culminating in the making of a needlework sampler. This focus was adopted in mission schools, illustrated by Christeen Baker's 1830 sampler stitched at the Choctaw Mission School in Mayhew, Mississippi. Shortly …

Small Satellite Conference
Six years ago, CNES started R&D studies related to telemetry in X band, with the goal of providing to micro satellite platform manufacturers a low cost but high performances X band transmitter. The promising results achieved have led to the decision to develop a transmitter for ESA PROBA-V spacecraft to be launched in 2013. The first flight models have been designed in only 18 months and will be delivered to ESA in February 2012. In the same way, CNES is now studying a solution to download telemetry in X band for cube and nano satellites. The aim is to provide …

Change of the NRC report. The U.S. National Research Council (NRC), at the request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Geological Survey, conducted an Earth Science Decadal Survey review to assist in planning the next generation of Earth science satellite missions [NRC 2007; commonly referred to as the “Decadal Survey” (“DS”)]. The Geostationary Coastal and Air Pollution Events (GEO-CAPE) mission measuring tropospheric trace gases and aerosols and coastal ocean phytoplankton, water quality, and biogeochemistry from geostationary orbit was one of 17 recommended missions. Satellites in geostationary orbit provide …

Mission And Postmodernities, Rolv Olsen, Kajsa Ahlstrand, J. Andrew Kirk, Tania Petrova
Edinburgh Centenary Series
This volume is simply given the title Mission and Postmodernities, and its content is divided into four main parts: a dialogical introduction; elaborations on the theme, roughly divided into two groups as an attempt at creating a counterpoint, and finally, a chorus of voices from the Edinburgh Conference.

Christian Engagement With Poverty, Government, And Foreign Assistance, Evangelical Advocacy: A Response To Global Poverty
Syllabi
Stemming from the May 2010 Government, Global Poverty and God’s Mission in the World evangelical declaration (and consultation hosted at Wheaton College that originated the declaration), this course will explore four broad module categories that emerged: Theology of Poverty in Today’s World, How Christians Engage Government, Government Initiatives against Global Poverty, and Christian Advocacy on U.S. Foreign Assistance. Each module will include a robust exploration of: 1) important topics; 2) contentious questions; 3) key resources; and, 4) questions for reflection and action.

A Learning Missional Church: Reflections From Young Missiologists, Beate Fagerli, Knud Jorgenson, Kari Storstein Haug, Rolv Olsen, Knut Tveitereid
Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series
This book is compiled by contributions from young missiologists from different parts of the world. It is written from the perspective of youth to be a fresh breath of air into more traditional mission thinking and mission paradigms. These reflections are valuable because of the content; they deal with relevant issues, they depict the church as a 'learning organization' cross-culturally; and they raise signs of youthful willingness to challenge and change.
Life-Widening Mission: Global Perspectives From The Anglican Communion, Cathy Ross
Life-Widening Mission: Global Perspectives From The Anglican Communion, Cathy Ross
Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series
Each of the young Anglicans who write on the Five Marks of Mission were at the Edinburgh 2010 conference in June of that year. The articles were then reworked in Toronto a year later, so what you read here is the fruit of much labour, writing, and rewriting. These articles are also open and honest reflections from a range of young Anglicans in a variety of contexts. Here we see a glimpse of the strengths and struggles of the Anglican Communion. There is no space for complacency. The title of the book created much discussion. I still remember the excitement …
