Folding Forms, Susan Tibbitts Dec 2012

Folding Forms, Susan Tibbitts

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

“Folding Forms” is a creative research project that examined the process of converting two-dimensional graphics into three-dimensional forms for architectural and interior use. The work required a non-linear, design process involving hand sketching, digital graphics, printing, scoring, cutting and folding, resulting in conceptual, folded paper forms. Extensive prototype and exploratory models were built to achieve the desired outcome. The seemingly simple graphics produce complex forms.

Terms For Talking About Information And Communication, Corey Anton Aug 2012

Terms For Talking About Information And Communication, Corey Anton

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper offers terms for talking about information and how it relates to both matter-energy and communication, by: (1) Identifying three different levels of signs: Index, based in contiguity, icon, based in similarity, and symbol, based in convention; (2) examining three kinds of coding: Analogic differences, which deal with positive quantities having contiguous and continuous values, and digital distinctions, which include “either/or functions”, discrete values, and capacities for negation, decontextualization, and abstract concept-transfer, and finally, iconic coding, which incorporates both analogic differences and digital distinctions; and (3) differentiating between “information theoretic” orientations (which deal …

Evaluation Of The Press Calibration Methods By Simulation, Yi Wang Aug 2012

Evaluation Of The Press Calibration Methods By Simulation, Yi Wang

Theses

Press calibration is an approach to adjust the behavior of ink, paper, and press with the use of a CTP platemaking system to achieve a specified reference printing condition. Reference printing condition defines a common color space for color image data exchange between various output devices. The advantage of a reference printing condition is to improve color image quality and reduce cost and time. Corner points of the color gamut, TVI curves, and grey reproduction are the three significant elements in a reference printing condition, which make them essential in press calibration. There are usually two press runs in press …

Comparison Of Designer’S Design Thinking Modes In Digital And Traditional Sketches, Jun-Chieh Wu, Cheng-Chi Chen, Hsin-Chia Chen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The internal design thinking behavior of designers in the concept development has been an important issue of cognitive psychology. In this study, the design thinking process designers have in applying digital media and traditional paper in the early concept development stage was explored. Special focus was made on the structure and procedure of problem solving. With the verbal data obtained, the protocol analysis was employed to analyze designer’s thinking behaviors in using different media. From the study, the author had reached the following conclusions: (1) The proficiency and related knowledge designers have for the design project has a big impact …

Digital Graphic Equalizer Implemented Using An Fpga, Anthony Giardina Jun 2012

Digital Graphic Equalizer Implemented Using An Fpga, Anthony Giardina

Electrical Engineering

A graphic equalizer is a device that adjusts the tonal quality of an audio signal. When sound is converted from a digital format to analog sound waves, there are amplification and transducing steps in-between the two formats. Common devices to perform these tasks are speakers, amplifiers, DACs, etc. Many of these devices exhibit a non-uniform frequency response over the range of human hearing. Thus, it is possible that certain frequency ranges of the audio signal will be amplified and others will be attenuated. To counteract this, an audio equalizer can be used to boost and attenuate certain frequency ranges within …

Hive Five, Tom Kotcher

Theses

For my thesis, I started out with the ambition of creating a game using Augmented Reality, but in the end created a game in Flash called Hive Five. I used multiple techniques and technologies in order to help accomplish this. By combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional assets, the player gets the best of both worlds. This also gives it the flexibility to be converted later into a mobile game since it is not hard on processing power. This game gave me a solid start with graphics and a strong programming skeleton that I can continue on with in the future. Through …

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell May 2012

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea. Initially, there existed the goal to create a drawing that was architecture. In the creation of a process wherein the drawing is the research, however, there comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural, or at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture itself.

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A by-product of Heating, Ventilation, and Air-conditioning (HVAC) systems is noise that is produced by fans, compressors, and other related equipments and the noises from the turbulence that is created by moving air. Sometimes, it is impractical to modify the sources of the noise, which requires designers to modify the path of the noise, the duct system. These modifications might include installing an in-duct silencer or acoustical lining on the inside walls of the ducts. The testing and the precise quantification of the performance of these silencers and duct linings are necessary for any designer to be able to make …

Articulations Of Irish Language Poetry As Multimodal Texts, Brenda Duggan Jan 2012

Articulations Of Irish Language Poetry As Multimodal Texts, Brenda Duggan

Conference Papers

Abstract

In October of last year, visual communication students at Technological University Dublin took part in an exhibition of Irish language literature texts that were imaginatively extended, exploring an array of new literacies. Taking the Irish language texts as a starting point for this project, students creatively explored print, visual, digital and material modes to extend the meaning of the poetry.

This paper explores, from a social semiotic perspective the creative potential this multimodal work offers design pedagogy in how we frame and articulate meaning across both print and digital media design education. With an emphasis on an ensemble of …

This capstone project addresses the issue of the acceleration of cadastre renovation in Kosovo. The cadastre of a country is its register of property titles and is usually managed by government agencies1. The Cadastre in Kosovo is managed by the Kosovo Cadastral Agency (KCA), which is the highest authority for cadastre in the Republic of Kosovo. Cadastre renovation in Kosovo has started since 2003, with the pilot project in cadastral zone (CZ) Dobrashec in Gllogovc municipality. In that time, this pilot project was declared successful. After this pilot there has been another pilot project in three CZ. These CZ are …

"We Should Have Brought The Tank": Hypermediated Interactivity In Red Vs. Blue, Marc A. Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

Machinima, the practice of adapting recorded video game play into short films, highlights an often unacknowledged but significant shift in the consumption of video games and represents a key and underexplored intersection between the two leading theoretical camps. Considering the landmark series Red vs. Blue through the lens of Bolter and Grusin's propositions about "new" media's relationships with other forms offers an entry point for theorizing not only machinima but also the intersections between the ludology and narratology positions in games studies.

Blended Learning Environments In Higher Education: A Case Study Of How Professors Make It Happen, Sarah E. King, Katie Cerrone Arnold Jan 2012

Blended Learning Environments In Higher Education: A Case Study Of How Professors Make It Happen, Sarah E. King, Katie Cerrone Arnold

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Blended learning has become a prominent method of course content delivery in higher education. Researchers have found that motivation, communication, and course design are three factors that contribute to the overall success of blended learning courses and students’ satisfaction with blended learning courses. This qualitative study also found that course preparation emerged through the participant interviews as a contributing factor. What remains unclear, however, is whether faculty take these factors into consideration when preparing to teach a blended learning course and, if so, how. In this study, a collective case study of five faculty of blended learning courses was conducted …
