Many global amphibian declines have been linked to the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). The knowledge on Bd distribution provides a fundamental basis for amphibian conservation planning. Yet, such Bd distribution information is currently insufficient, in particular at a regional scale. The college classroom provides an excellent opportunity to expand the knowledge of Bd distribution. Here we provide an example of such research projects to detect Bd prevalence among local amphibians in a college course setting and present the results of work conducted in central Pennsylvania, USA. We collected toe clips and conducted PCR assays of six species, …

Excavations At The Thaddeus Stevens And Lydia Hamiltonsmith Site, Lancaster, Pennsylvania: Archaeological Evidencefor The Underground Railroad, James A. Delle, Mary Ann Levine
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This article reports on archaeological investigations conducted at the Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith Site in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Stevens and Smith Site stands in the footprint of Ii proposed convention center and hotel complex, and will be partially destroyed by the construction. Stevens, a noted anti-slavery legislator, and Smith, his African American housekeeper and companion, are reputed to have been actively involved in the Underground Railroad during the 1850s. While little concrete evidence exists to corroborate the degree to which Stevens and Smith assisted fugitives escaping from enslavement, our excavations uncovered a modified cistern that may have been …

Northeast Historical Archaeology
This paper presents the results of excavations at the Heminitz Property Site (36LH267), a rural domestic site in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania; Excavation, .'of several spatially and temporally discrete features and midden deposits in yards surrounding the house produced 6,875 artifacts. Documentary research revealed that the ca. 1843 house was intended to house tenant families engaged in agricultural labor. Analysis of the archaeological and documentary records associated with this site and the region shows that inthe mid-1800s, agricultural laborers possessed similar material. culture to neighboring independent farmers, while subsisting at a lower level of consumption. BACKGROUND: Despite the emphasis placed on interdisciplinary education and interprofessional collaboration between physicians and pharmacologists, no psychometrically sound instrument is available to measure attitudes toward collaborative relationships.
AIM: This study was designed to examine psychometrics of an instrument for measuring attitudes toward physician-pharmacist collaborative relationships for administration to students in medical and pharmacy schools and to physicians and pharmacists.
METHODS: The Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician-Pharmacist Collaboration was completed by 210 students at Jefferson Medical College. Factor analysis and correlational methods were used to examine psychometrics of the instrument.
RESULTS: Consistent with the conceptual framework of interprofessional collaboration, three underlying …

In colorectal cancer, the antitumorigenic guanylyl cyclase C (GCC) signalome is defective reflecting ligand deprivation from downregulation of endogenous hormone expression. Although the proximal intracellular mediators of that signal transduction system, including cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG), are well characterized, the functional significance of its distal effectors remain vague. Dysregulation of ligand-dependent GCC signaling through vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), an actin-binding protein implicated in membrane protrusion dynamics, drastically reduced cGMP-dependent VASP phosphorylation levels in colorectal tumors from patients. Restoration of cGMP-dependent VASP phosphorylation by GCC agonists suppressed the number and length of locomotory (filopodia) and invasive (invadopodia) …

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
By now, most academicians are aware of the assaults on academic freedom as contained in the Academic Bill of Rights (ABOR) legislation introduced, in some form, in some 24 states. Part of a national movement to muzzle professors deemed too liberal for our colleges and universities, this witch hunt, instigated by former liberal radical David Horowitz, has had a chilling effect on campuses. Some faculty organizations are fighting back; APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), a union representing some 5,500 faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), is one of them. This …

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the phase of menstrual cycle influences the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in women undergoing general anesthesia for elective laparoscopic gynecological surgery.
DESIGN: Prospective, observational, blinded study.
SETTING: General hospital, Postanesthesia Care Unit, and gynecologic floor room.
PATIENTS: 111 ASA physical status 1 and 2 women, aged 18 to 53 years.
INTERVENTIONS: Patients were classified into three groups according to the phase of menstrual cycle at the time of anesthesia: Group F1: follicular phase (menstrual days 1-8; n = 34); Group O2: ovulatory phase (days 9-15; n = 40); and Group L3: luteal …

Conclusions:
Aberrant CD56 expression on granulocytes is seen in all aubtypes MPN and high grade MDS. CD56 expression in MPN correlated with bone marrow morphology, BCR/ABL transcript, and bone marrow engraftment study following treatment. Identification of abnormal CD56+ granulocytes and monocytes is helpful in both the initial diagnosis and long-term follow up of patients with MPN and MDS.

Loss Of Retinoblastoma (Rb) Tumor Suppressor Expression In Breast Cancer Correlates With Better Response To Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy, Jeanne Mcfalls, Md, Jessica Kline, Ba, Gordon Schwartz, Md, Mba, Facs, Angieszka Witkiewicz, Md
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Conclusions:
Loss of RB tumor suppressor staining in pre-treatment breast cancer biopsies can be used prior to initiation of neoadjuvant chemotherapy to predict good tumor response. This association between RB loss and good neoadjuvant response holds regardless of ER status and across various chemotherapy regimens. Assessment of RB status in the pre-treatment biopsy could be useful clinical tool to define patients who are most likely to benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Conclusions:
Cervical dysplasia show positive staining for ALDH1 compared to normal cervical mucosa.
ALDH1 positive cells distribution parallels the dysplastic cells in cervical dysplasia.
CSC, as detected by ALDH1 expression, may play a role in the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and carcinogenesis.

Background and Objectives
High risk HPV is associated with oropharyngeal SCC (OSCC) and is responsible for the increasing incidence of this cancer type among younger patients.
Patients with HPV positive oropharyngeal SCC have a better prognosis when compared with HPV negative, tobacco induced SCC.
HPV E6 inactivates p53 leading to low expression of p53; tobacco induced oropharyngeal SCC is characterized by p53 overexpression, resistance to treatment and poor prognosis. However, in many cases of HPV OSCC, there is a history of current or remote smoking, making this disease a multifactorial process. We expect that smoking will influence the level of …
