Cd2ap Regulates Sumoylation Of Cin85 In Podocytes, Irini Tossidou, Rainer Niedenthal, Malte Klaus, Beina Teng, Kirstin Worthmann, Benjamin King, Kevin Peterson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Podocytes are highly differentiated and polarized epithelial cells located on the visceral side of the glomerulus. They form an indispensable component of the glomerular filter, the slit diaphragm, formed by several transmembrane proteins and adaptor molecules. Disruption of the slit diaphragm can lead to massive proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome in mice and humans. CD2AP is an adaptor protein that is important for the maintenance of the slit diaphragm. Together with its paralogue, CIN85, CD2AP belongs to a family of adaptor proteins that are primarily described as being involved in endocytosis and downregulation of receptor tyrosine kinase activity. We have shown …

Morpholino Gene Knockdown In Adult Fundulus Heteroclitus: Role Of Sgk1 In Seawater Acclimation, Emily G. Notch, Joseph R. Shaw, Bonita A. Coutermarsh, Marisa Dzioba, Bruce A. Stanton

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) is an environmental sentinel organism used extensively for studies on environmental toxicants and salt (NaCl) homeostasis. Previous research in our laboratory has shown that rapid acclimation of killifish to seawater is mediated by trafficking of CFTR chloride channels from intracellular vesicles to the plasma membrane in the opercular membrane within the first hour in seawater, which enhances chloride secretion into seawater, thereby contributing to salt homeostasis. Acute transition to seawater is also marked by an increase in both mRNA and protein levels of serum glucocorticoid kinase 1 (SGK1) within 15 minutes of transfer. …

Sam Van Aken: New Edens, Shannon Egan

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Hybridized fruit trees, grafted orchids on shiny, reflective aluminum pedestals, fluorescent lights placed vertically on stands, and sheets of silver Mylar create a lush and somewhat disorienting space in contemporary artist Sam Van Aken’s most recent body of work New Edens. Van Aken makes Gettysburg College’s Schmucker Art Gallery into a kind of fantastical and futuristic winter garden. Without daylight and despite the cool fall weather of the Northeast, the dozen trees in the gallery are leafy and green, some even bearing fruit. Peach, plum, cherry, nectarine and apricot branches emerge from a single trunk and grow productively alongside their …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-08-15, Zack Paakkonen Aug 2011

Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-08-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetation Of Vernal Pools Of Acadia National Park, Maine, U.S.A, Brett Ciccotelli, Tanner B. Harris, Bruce Connery, Nishanta Rajakaruna

Biological Sciences

We conducted a preliminary floristic study of six vernal pools in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Plant species were recorded on three sampling dates from April to October, 2008. Sixty-five vascular plant species from 26 families were recorded. Of these, 27 are considered occasional or uncommon in Acadia National Park. Thirteen species are new reports for vernal pools in the northeastern United States. This represents the first published study of the vernal pool flora of Acadia National Park.

Molecular And Immunohistochemical Identification Of A Sodium Hydrogen Exchanger-2c (Nhe2c) Paralog In The Gills Of Marine Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Demi Brett Rabeneck Jul 2011

Molecular And Immunohistochemical Identification Of A Sodium Hydrogen Exchanger-2c (Nhe2c) Paralog In The Gills Of Marine Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Demi Brett Rabeneck

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sodium hydrogen exchanger proteins (NHEs) are members of the cation proton antiporter superfamily (CPA) and are thought to function in fish for maintaining physiological ion concentrations and acid-base balances by excreting excess H+ ions from the body in exchange for Na+ ions. There are many more types of these proteins in teleost fish than in mammals due to putative genome duplication. This study describes a new form of NHE2 in the gills of marine longhorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus, designated NHE2c. Sequencing revealed that the NHE2c nucleotide-coding region transcribes a peptide 795 amino acids in length with an estimated molecular weight …

University Traveler Value Of Potential Real-Time Transit Information, Ryan N. Fries, Anne E. Dunning, Mashrur A. Chowdhury Jun 2011

University Traveler Value Of Potential Real-Time Transit Information, Ryan N. Fries, Anne E. Dunning, Mashrur A. Chowdhury

Journal of Public Transportation

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have become common in public transit systems, particularly providing real-time transit information. For new implementations, it remains difficult to predict and quantify system and user benefits of technology implementation. Although previous studies have quantified the operational benefits of real-time transit traveler information systems, a gap in knowledge exists around passenger benefits of such systems. The objective of this research was to create a refined method for evaluating transit rider benefits from real-time traveler information and predict changes in traveler behavior. The study was conducted on a rural university campus, isolating the impacts of the system from …

Distribution Patterns Of River Otters, Lontra Canadensis, Within Monroe County, New York, Darren Doherty May 2011

Distribution Patterns Of River Otters, Lontra Canadensis, Within Monroe County, New York, Darren Doherty

Theses

River Otters, Lontra canadensis were reintroduced to western NY after being extirpated in the early 1900's. The goal of this project was to understand what environmental variables influence habitat selection of river otters, within Monroe County, New York. Water chemistry and the use of benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated to assess the water quality and human impacts. The research area included three tributaries of the Genesee River: Black, Honeoye, and Oatka Creeks. At identified latrine sites, I collected macroinvertebrates at 9 sites and water chemistry at 30 sites to provide an index of the water quality. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) was …
