The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Spatial Turn in Literary Historiography," Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza examines the spatialization of literary history in recent years. He evaluates the resurgence of interest in literary geography and argues that the geographic dimension is not the only aspect of the predominant spatiality in new literary histories. Further, Cabo Aseguinolaza postulates that although the emphasis on spatiality marks many current literary histories, all literary histories imply spatial elements of different character and scope and that these options constitute an essential part of the performative capacity of history writing. In particular, Cabo Aseguinolaza discusses categories proposed by Henri Lefebvre …
Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry And The Iberian Interliterary System, Santiago Gutiérrez García
Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry And The Iberian Interliterary System, Santiago Gutiérrez García
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry and the Iberian Interliterary System" Santiago Gutiérrez García explores the notion that the possibility of carrying out a comparative study of Iberian literatures is determined by its interliterary system. Gutiérrez García postulates that the said interliterary system comprises a series of peripheral literatures which seek their self-affirmation through opposition to the hegemonic center, namely Castilian literature. He uses the example of Galician Portuguese medieval poetry and illustrates the problematic nature of his approach elaborating that despite the fact that this medieval poetic tradition is shared by both Galician and Portuguese literatures, as literary …
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Geography and Comparative Literature" César Domínguez analyzes the relevance of political and linguistic frameworks for comparative literary historiography in the context of the European Union. Domínguez's discussion is based on the notion of geoculture whose theorization from Immanuel Wallerstein's perspective presents paradigms of interest to comparative literature. The idea of literary geography is conceived as a unit for analyzing diverse stages of the interliterary process. Thus, within the framework of the current renaissance of Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur, the phenomena of the literatures of (im)migration, exile, and literary diglossia represent challenges for the contextualization and …

From Confederate Deserter To Decorated Veteran Bible Scholar: Exploring The Enigmatic Life Of C.I. Scofield 1861-1921., D. Jean Rushing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cyrus Ingerson Scofield portrayed himself as a decorated Confederate veteran, a successful lawyer, and a Bible scholar who was providentially destined to edit his 1909 dispensational opus, The Scofield Reference Bible. This thesis offers a multilayered image of Dr. Scofield's life by considering political and regional influences, racial and gender attitudes, and religious views he encountered between 1861 and 1921. This study includes an examination of his participation in the American Civil War including his desertion of the South in 1862. After becoming a Union loyalist, Scofield excelled as a lawyer and Republican politician before corruption rumors radically altered …
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Honors Theses
The current scholarship on the education of the freed slaves in the South during Reconstruction is not so much one of differing points of view, but of specialization within the broader topic. Most of this scholarship focuses on the Southern region as a whole, rather than limiting the scope to just one state or smaller geographic area. Instead of arguing for or against a particular point of view, today's historians are focusing on one part of the larger topic to analyze. Whether studying the people themselves and their motivations, the teachers who educated them, or the system of education that …
Scramjet Isolator Modeling And Control, John R. Hutzel
Scramjet Isolator Modeling And Control, John R. Hutzel
Theses and Dissertations
The scramjet isolator is a duct in which pressure increases from the inlet to the combustor via a shock train. The shock train leading edge (LE) location must be controlled in an operational scramjet. A LE location measurement algorithm, dynamic model, and control algorithm were developed and validated with 500 frame per second (FPS) shadowgraph images in this research. The test apparatus consisted of a direct connect cold-flow high-speed wind tunnel with an adjustable ramp mounted in the tunnel floor. Ramp adjustments changed the tunnel cross-sectional area which changed the tunnel back pressure and LE location. Wall-mounted pressure transducers and …
Everything That Rises Must Converge: A Chinese-English Contrastive Rhetoric Case Study, Shuwen Li
Everything That Rises Must Converge: A Chinese-English Contrastive Rhetoric Case Study, Shuwen Li
Theses and Dissertations
The traditional definition of contrastive rhetoric (CR) emphasizes prescribing and teaching differences in rhetorical patterns. This paper raises questions about traditional CR and analyzes recent developments, which move from differences to similarities in rhetorical patterns, within the context of increasing globalization. Through surveying Chinese-English CR, China's New Culture Movement, and China's New Concept Writing Competition, this paper proposes seven hypotheses with an emphasis on exploring the commonly accepted themes and the possibility of reaching convergence in cross-cultural communication. Using Burke's definition of rhetoric as the theoretical framework, this paper conducts a case study on Chinese and English movie reviews. Tagmemic …
The Invisible Other: White Trash In William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! And The Hamlet, Bryant Edwards Trihey
The Invisible Other: White Trash In William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! And The Hamlet, Bryant Edwards Trihey
Theses & Honors Papers
The idea of a “white soul” and the protection of its purity was prolific during William Faulkner’s adolescence in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which is why he feared the establishment of a hybrid mix of races, especially one that tarnished whiteness. This thesis exams whiteness in Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! and The Hamlet. The findings on this thesis indicate that only white trash can fix the problem that is white trash, which means that white trash is not even safe from itself. Faulkner finished Absalom, Absalom! with further avowal of his fear of the tainting of the white …
The Political Effect Of The Ku Klux Klan In North Dakota, Trevor M. Magel
The Political Effect Of The Ku Klux Klan In North Dakota, Trevor M. Magel
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The 1920s was a transitional decade in the political history of the United States. Progressivism did not have the influence it had had in the first couple of decades of the 20th Century but its ideas were still part of the debate. But many other elements became more prominent such as: Americanism, Urbanization, and Nativism. North Dakota is a good case study of these trends and how the Klan tried to use these trends to gain power. The Nonpartisan League, Independent Voters' Association, and Ku Klux Klan conflict in North Dakota reflected broader political conflicts happening within the country over …
Emotion And The Work Of Writing: The Making Of Modern Literature In Media History, Wentao Jiang
Emotion And The Work Of Writing: The Making Of Modern Literature In Media History, Wentao Jiang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation investigates a history of representation of emotions in the British long eighteenth century and in the context of a rising textual culture. I do so by tracing the trope of sympathy, which is pervasive in eighteenth-century writings such as aesthetic treatises, moral philosophy, and Romantic poetry. Sympathy builds sociality through the communication of feelings and is enacted in the practices of reading, writing and representation, all of which were changing drastically as everyday life was increasingly saturated with textual media. In the process, individual emotions have to be "flattened" (Adam Smith's word) so as to be communicable, while …
Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew
Assessing The Authenticity Of The Document-Based Question Featured Within The New York State Global History And Geography Regents, Clinton Depew
Education Masters
This study questioned the validity of the Global History and Geography Regents exam DBQ as an authentic learning event and assessment. The previous five years of the Global History and Geography Regents DBQs administered in June were evaluated to assess the authenticity of the documents in regards to their context, the level of questioning featured in the task and constructed response questions, and the readability levels of the documents. Ultimately the analysis of the data disproved the validity of the DBQ as an authentic task as presented in the Global History and Geography Regents. In the end, teachers must infuse …

Self-Efficacy And First-Generation Students In A Physician Assistant Program, Judith B. Stallings
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this mixed method study was to determine if a relationship existed between self-efficacy scores and a final program course grade for first-generation graduate professional college students (FGS) and non-first-generation graduate professional college students (NFGS) in a physician assistant program. In addition, the researcher sought to explore the perceptions of first-generation graduate professional program students regarding experiences, contributors, and successful strategies relative to self-efficacy as related to completion of their degree program. Method: This mixed method study examined the experiences of 59 physician assistant students from Georgia Health Sciences University (formerly known as the Medical College of …
A Comparison Of Student Performance In Single-Sex Education And Coeducational Settings In Urban Middle Schools, Craig Erico Ogden
A Comparison Of Student Performance In Single-Sex Education And Coeducational Settings In Urban Middle Schools, Craig Erico Ogden
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Since amendments to NCLB in 2004, public schools have not only established single-sex schools, but have also established single-sex classrooms within coeducational schools. Most of these modifications were adopted as a means to provide support to lowachieving students, many of who reside in urban settings. Proponents of single-sex instruction state that mostly African Americans, Hispanics, and females benefit most from this type of instructional setting because single-sex environments help to reduce gender stereotypes students encounter in coeducational settings. Opponents of single-sex instruction believe that accomplishments achieved in single-sex environments can be achieved in coeducational environments if the proper teaching strategies …
Supporting Quality Teaching With Recognition, Hans A. Andrews
Supporting Quality Teaching With Recognition, Hans A. Andrews
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Abstract
Value has been found in providing recognition and awards programs for excellent teachers. Research has also found a major lack of these programs in both the USA and in Australia. Teachers receiving recognition and awards for their teaching have praised recognition programs as providing motivation for them to continue high-level instruction. Motivational theories provide a solid foundation for these programs. Teacher educators should find ‘recognition’ as an important part of their curriculum in terms of teaching the research behind motivational theories. They can also encourage K-12 schools to provide recognition to the excellent teachers working with university teacher educators …
Our Cities And The City: Incompatible Classics?, Carl Abbott
Our Cities And The City: Incompatible Classics?, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
At the end of the 1930s, Americans interested in the fates and futures of their cities had the opportunity to consider two new efforts to summarize urban problems and propose solutions. The first was Our Cities: Their Role in the National Economy, published in 1937 under the auspices of the National Resources Board. The second was The City, a film sponsored by the American Institute of Planners for showing at the New York world's fair in 1939. The report and the film arose out of different analytical traditions, the first from the approach that embedded urban planning within a larger …
Integration Versus Apartheid In Post-Roman Britain: A Response To Thomas Et Al. (2008), John E. Pattison
Integration Versus Apartheid In Post-Roman Britain: A Response To Thomas Et Al. (2008), John E. Pattison
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The genetic surveys of the population of Britain conducted by Weale et al. and Capelli et al. produced estimates of the Germani immigration into Britain during the early Anglo-Saxon period, c.430-c.730. These estimates are considerably higher than the estimates of archaeologists. A possible explanation suggested that an apartheid-like social system existed in the early Anglo-Saxon kingdoms resulting in the Germani breeding more quickly than the Britons. Thomas et al. attempted to model this suggestion and showed that it was a possible explanation if all Anglo-Saxon kingdoms had such a system for up to 400 yrs. I noted that their explanation …
The State And Future Of Genocide Studies And Prevention: An Overview And Analysis Of Some Key Issues, Samuel Totten
The State And Future Of Genocide Studies And Prevention: An Overview And Analysis Of Some Key Issues, Samuel Totten
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In addition to providing a succinct history of the field of genocide studies, this article examines such issues as the critical need to address the toughest barriers to the prevention of and intervention against genocide (e.g., realpolitik, the lack of political will, and the reform of the UN Security Council, including the make-up and operation of the Permanent Five members [Great Britain, US, France, Russia, and China]); whether the Crimes Against Humanity Initiative will make a real difference vis-a`-vis the prevention of and intervention against genocide; the critical need for the field to be more inclusive by welcoming and nurturing …
Malcolm X And The Limits Of “Authentically Black And Truly Catholic”: A Research Project On Black Radicalism And Black Catholic Faith, Bryan N. Massingale
Malcolm X And The Limits Of “Authentically Black And Truly Catholic”: A Research Project On Black Radicalism And Black Catholic Faith, Bryan N. Massingale
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Based on the talk he delivered during the 2010 Annual Meeting, Massingale here tackles head‐on the unvoiced questions with which most of us have struggled at some point our careers and ministries. He begins by unveiling the conflicted ramifications of ‘authentically black and truly Catholic’. Echoing Copeland’s reference in Volume IV to the price that black scholars and theologians must pay to “speak and act and live in truth” (p. 75), Massingale explores Malcolm X’s call for Black Nationalism and its synthesis and coexistence with Integrationism in current Black Catholicism. Finally, he asks a series of haunting questions about what …

Deterrence And Escalation In Cross-Domain Operations: Where Do Space And Cyberspace Fit?, Vincent Manzo
Deterrence And Escalation In Cross-Domain Operations: Where Do Space And Cyberspace Fit?, Vincent Manzo
Strategic Forums
Warfare has become even more complicated since Richard Smoke wrote this description of escalation in 1977. The National Security Space Strategy describes space as “congested, contested, and competitive,” yet satellites underpin U.S. military and economic power. Activity in cyberspace has permeated every facet of human activity, including U.S. military operations, yet the prospects for effective cyber defenses are bleak. Many other actors depend on continued access to these domains, but not nearly as much as the United States.
Following The Principles: Case Studies In Operations Other Than War, 1945-1999, Kevin Joseph Dougherty
Following The Principles: Case Studies In Operations Other Than War, 1945-1999, Kevin Joseph Dougherty
Dissertations
In the post-World War II-era, operations other than war (OOTW) were the types of conflict most commonly faced by the United States. This term for what had previously been called by such names as small wars and low intensity conflict was incorporated in the Army’s capstone manual, Field Manual (FM) 100-5, Operations, in 1993. Field Manual 100-5 also listed objective, unity of effort, legitimacy, perseverance, restraint, and security as the six principles of OOTW. An analysis of eight OOTWs that occurred between 1945 and 1999 indicates that the balanced application of these principles is a reliable predicator of the operation’s …

Factors Affecting Private School Choice, John Herman Hartsell Sr.
Dissertations
This study explored the underlying factors that influence parents’ choices of educational institution for their children in private schools in a southern United States coastal city. It also explored why parents chose the specific private school their child is currently enrolled in and their satisfaction level with teacher, parent and student relationships. Parental satisfaction with the overall instructional program and the services provided was also explored in this study. Data was collected from parents with students currently enrolled in one of two different private schools with input from 253 parents.
A central finding in this research is that parents who …
Rethinking Maltese Legal Hybridity: A Chimeric Illusion Or A Healthy Grafted European Law Mixture?, Kevin Aquilina
Rethinking Maltese Legal Hybridity: A Chimeric Illusion Or A Healthy Grafted European Law Mixture?, Kevin Aquilina
Journal of Civil Law Studies
Although Maltese Law is traditionally classified as a mixed system of Civil Law and Common Law, this paper suggests that it is more appropriate to do away with this designation, which is not entirely exact, and instead call it what it really is, namely, a ‘European’ legal system.
The paper proposes a typology of the Maltese legal system divided into nine distinct phases which contain traces of Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law, Canon Law, Maltese Autochthonous Law, European Union Law, Regional Law (Mediterranean Law and, in its widest sense, European Law), Public International Law and elements of foreign national …
From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti
From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti
Journal of Civil Law Studies
In the nineteenth century, justice in the Ottoman Empire appeared to international jurists deeply corrupted and far from the Western model. European consular jurisdictions, as in the past, solved this embarrassment in the prevalent and private interest of Western States in order to control the Mediterranean area. This perpetrated abjuration to recognize an autonomous and sovereign Ottoman administration of justice in civil or criminal cases in which foreigners were involved continued, in spite of the fact that the Porte provided excellent examples of intersection, reception and appropriation of foreign models to construct a new legal system, and to transform society. …

Revisiting A Founding Assumption Of Genocide Studies, A Dirk Moses
Revisiting A Founding Assumption Of Genocide Studies, A Dirk Moses
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Genocide studies has come a long way over the past decade, having attained a level of intellectual sobriety, academic credibility, and public recognition virtually inconceivable forty years ago. At the same time, there have been signs of convergence between the fields of genocide studies and Holocaust historiography and studies. This development can be challenging for those in Holocaust studies and historio- graphy because the relationship betweem the two disciplines is complicated by genocide studies’ claim to incorporate the Holocaust into its object of inquiry, whereas the reverse does not hold. There is a potentially subordinate situation here, or at least …

First Mover: Otto Struve And The Use Of Scientific Capital In Astrophysics, 1921–1950, Erik Paul Norquest
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Otto Struve (1897-1963) came to the United States in 1921 and became one of the dominant personalities in the field of astrophysics. Struve’s career made him, in the words of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, a “first mover” in a scientific field that was firmly engaged in the process of what Thomas Kuhn called “normal science.” Struve pulled astrophysics further away from its empirical roots in categorization and made it more like physics in its unification of theory and observation. The primary way that he accomplished this was through his administration of Yerkes and McDonald observatories, where he brought in theorists to …

Direct Instruction And African American Middle School Students, Zelda Togun
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This study examined teacher-created instruction and direct instruction using The Muted Group Theory. The study questions were: RQ1: Which is the better method for teaching African American middle-school children? RQ2: What role does Muted-Group Theory play in the academic choices offered to families of African American middle school children?
