Transitioning To The Civilian Workforce: Issues Impacting The Reentry Of Rural Women Veterans, Celia Renteria Szelwach, Jill Steinkogler, Ellen R. Badger, Ria Muttukumaru
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Women veterans seeking employment in rural areas often face several challenges, such as geographical barriers, limited employment opportunities, and a lack of childcare resources within their respective communities. This exploratory study builds on the 2001 report by the Women’s Research & Education Institute (WREI), which outlined the effects of military service on women veterans’ civilian employment prospects. In addition, it explores the specific challenges through a review of current literature, assessment of Bureau of Labor Statistics datasets, and the conduct and analysis of qualitative interviews. Addressing the needs of women veterans returning to rural environments for employment requires a three-pronged …

Coyotes Among Us, Karen E. Lange
Serial - All Animals 2009-15
“If coyotes want to live in cities, they’re going to live in cities,” says researcher Stanley Gehrt. Animal advocates, scientists, and government officials are eschewing lethal methods in favor of changing our own behavior as the best hope for coexistence with this adaptable predator.
The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Spatial Turn in Literary Historiography," Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza examines the spatialization of literary history in recent years. He evaluates the resurgence of interest in literary geography and argues that the geographic dimension is not the only aspect of the predominant spatiality in new literary histories. Further, Cabo Aseguinolaza postulates that although the emphasis on spatiality marks many current literary histories, all literary histories imply spatial elements of different character and scope and that these options constitute an essential part of the performative capacity of history writing. In particular, Cabo Aseguinolaza discusses categories proposed by Henri Lefebvre …
Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry And The Iberian Interliterary System, Santiago Gutiérrez García
Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry And The Iberian Interliterary System, Santiago Gutiérrez García
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Galician Portuguese Medieval Poetry and the Iberian Interliterary System" Santiago Gutiérrez García explores the notion that the possibility of carrying out a comparative study of Iberian literatures is determined by its interliterary system. Gutiérrez García postulates that the said interliterary system comprises a series of peripheral literatures which seek their self-affirmation through opposition to the hegemonic center, namely Castilian literature. He uses the example of Galician Portuguese medieval poetry and illustrates the problematic nature of his approach elaborating that despite the fact that this medieval poetic tradition is shared by both Galician and Portuguese literatures, as literary …

Comics And The Graphic Novel In Spain And Iberian Galicia, Antonio J. Gil González
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Comics and the Graphic Novel in Spain and Iberian Galicia," Antonio J. Gil González develops a comparative and interart analysis of graphic novels by examining the evolution of the genre on the Spanish peninsula in general and in Galicia in particular. Gil González builds his analysis on Roman Ingarden's concept of literature as not only traditional fiction, but also theater and cinema. Gil González presents his argumentation by identifying the peculiarities of the comic as a medium, starting with its historical beginnings, and discussing its principal formats and generic and thematic variants. Further, he discusses the principal …

Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Geography and Comparative Literature" César Domínguez analyzes the relevance of political and linguistic frameworks for comparative literary historiography in the context of the European Union. Domínguez's discussion is based on the notion of geoculture whose theorization from Immanuel Wallerstein's perspective presents paradigms of interest to comparative literature. The idea of literary geography is conceived as a unit for analyzing diverse stages of the interliterary process. Thus, within the framework of the current renaissance of Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur, the phenomena of the literatures of (im)migration, exile, and literary diglossia represent challenges for the contextualization and …
About Literary Systems And National Literatures, Elias J. Torres Feijó
About Literary Systems And National Literatures, Elias J. Torres Feijó
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "About Literary Systems and National Literatures," Elias Torres J. Feijó offers a polysystemic analysis with examples from the Iberian Peninsula. He argues that a community's literature can be understood as a) the gathering of so-called literary activities, which take place in a social space or b) something that identifies certain characteristics of a part or the whole of the members in a given social space. For his analysis, Torres Feijó employs Itamar Even-Zohar's notion of polysystem because it allows us to interpret each system generated by members of a given community and its delimitation, differentiation, and integration …
Catalan And Galician Literatures In Iberian And European Contexts, Olivia Rodríguez González
Catalan And Galician Literatures In Iberian And European Contexts, Olivia Rodríguez González
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Catalan and Galician Literatures in Iberian and European Contexts" Olivia Rodríguez González investigates the problematics of canon formation and proposes an approach within which the formation of a multi-system canon is possible. Reflections on the constitution of a European canon that would be the result of a proportional or market-driven combination of national literary canons leads to the conclusion that, with respect to the multicultural Spanish state, what will succeed in getting into the European canon will do so as a consequence of one of two processes. The first depends on what each literary system does to …
Global Approach And Regional Cooperation Of Black Sea Countries On The Problem Of Invasive Species, Anna Rabotnova
Global Approach And Regional Cooperation Of Black Sea Countries On The Problem Of Invasive Species, Anna Rabotnova
World Maritime University Dissertations
The productivity of water ecosystems plays a significant role in the development of human society. People delimitate oceans and the seas, however, ocean creatures are not familiar with those boundaries exist for them. They freely “travel” all over the world in and on ships, invade new ecosystems and harm them. Invasive alien species are now globally recognized as one of the biggest problems in shipping, which impacts environment, social economics and human health. Due to the international nature of shipping, it is positively to eliminate the problem of invasive species, but only to find the most efficient ways of controlling …

Securing The Gulf : Towards An Integrated Maritime Security Strategy For The Gulf Of Guinea, Daupreye Franklin. Matthew
World Maritime University Dissertations
The resurgence of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea in 2007 greatly affected the economy of some West African states especially Nigeria and Benin. The severity of attacks by pirates led to United Nations Security Council resolution 2018 (2011) expressing deep concern about the threat posed by piracy in the region and an intention for a cooperative regional action to combat this maritime security crime . Despite current efforts by some states in the region to curb piracy, this maritime security challenge still persists. Some factors identified as fuelling piracy include weak legislation, inadequate capacity of coastal navies, proliferation of …

Ensemble Forecast Spread Induced By Soil Moisture Changes Over Mid-South And Neighbouring Midwestern Region Of The Usa, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
This study investigated the potential impact of soil moisture perturbations on the statistical spread of an ensemble forecast for three different synoptic events during the summer of 2006. Soil moisture was perturbed from a control simulation to generate a 12 member ensemble with six drier and six moister soils. The impacts on the near-surface atmospheric conditions and on precipitation were analysed. It was found, as previous studies have confirmed, that soil moisture can change the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation and of the overlying circulation. It was found that regardless of the conditions in synoptic forcing, temperature, relative humidity …

Political Competition, Relative Deprivation, And Perceived Threat: A Research Note On Anti- Christian Violence In India, Chad Bauman, Tamara Leech
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
A preliminary subnational statistical analysis of violence against Christians in contemporary India, this article suggests that whereas the data provide very little support for simple, demographic explanations of this violence, they do more robustly support theories emphasizing the relative status of ethnic and religious minorities (vis-à-vis majorities) and the perception, among Hindus, that Christians (and other minorities) represent a threat to their numerical, political and economic strength.

Productivity Measurement For International Firms, Anže Burger, Črt Kostevc, Sašo Polanec
Economic and Business Review
This paper extends recent work by Martin (2005) on estimation of total factor productivity by allowing heterogeneity of markets in terms of competitive pressure. We show that conventional methods of total factor productivity estimation yield biased measures of TFP when firms charge market-specific prices. Specifically, if, as widely believed, exporting price-cost markups are, on average, lower than domestic markups, then traditional total factor productivity measures will substantially underestimate exporter productivity and overestimate the productivity of non-exporters. Crucially, our results provide some possible clues on why empirical studies failed to find conclusive evidence on the learning-by-exporting hypothesis.

Scholarly Inbreeding In Latin American Academically Managed Journals, Erwin Krauskopf
Scholarly Inbreeding In Latin American Academically Managed Journals, Erwin Krauskopf
Higher Learning Research Communications
From a bibliometric perspective, scholarly inbreeding has been identified in journals through the excessive use of both author and journal self-citations. However, editorial bias toward researchers from the same institution as the editorial management team has seldom been considered. According to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, this occurs when a journal publishes more than 20% of documents authored by researchers affiliated with the same institution as the editorial management team. The purpose of this study is to establish the extent to which 81 Latin American journals managed by universities publish intramural documents (defined as those published by its …
A Comparative Evaluation Of An Educational Program Designed To Enable Mechanical Engineering Students To Develop Global Competence, Aaron Gerald Ball
A Comparative Evaluation Of An Educational Program Designed To Enable Mechanical Engineering Students To Develop Global Competence, Aaron Gerald Ball
Theses and Dissertations
The 'flattening of the world', using Thomas Friedman's phraseology, is driving corporations to increasingly use collaborative engineering processes and global teams to operate on a global scale. Globalization of the traditional university engineering curriculum is necessary to help students prepare to work in a global environment. More scalable and economically sustainable program types are needed to enable the majority of students to obtain a globalized education. The purpose of this research was to determine how effectively a global team- and project-based computer aided engineering course provided learning opportunities that enabled students to develop elements of global competence in comparison to …
