How To Use Computer Graphics Popularize Tai Chi, Tao Zou Oct 2011

How To Use Computer Graphics Popularize Tai Chi, Tao Zou

Theses

TAIMIC is a visual interactive exploration application involving motion capture and 3D animation. It introduces Tai Chi to young generations and could be accessed through the Internet from anywhere in the world. Tai Chi, a division of Chinese Kong Fu, has been popular in China for hundreds of years. Today Tai Chi has been spreading worldwide. Thousands of people in the world practice Tai Chi every day. However, most of the participants are senior people. As a result, I am creating a way to popularize Tai Chi among young people. My goal for this project is to use computer graphics …

Symmetry-Based Techniques For Qualitative Understanding Of Rovibrational Effects In Spherical-Top Molecular Spectra And Dynamics, Justin Chadwick Mitchell May 2011

Symmetry-Based Techniques For Qualitative Understanding Of Rovibrational Effects In Spherical-Top Molecular Spectra And Dynamics, Justin Chadwick Mitchell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using light to probe the structure of matter is as natural as opening our eyes. Modern physics and chemistry have turned this art into a rich science, measuring the delicate interactions possible at the molecular level.

Perhaps the most commonly used tool in computational spectroscopy is that of matrix diagonalization. While this is invaluable for calculating everything from molecular structure and energy levels to dipole moments and dynamics, the process of numerical diagonalization is an opaque one. This work applies symmetry and semi-classical techniques to elucidate numerical spectral analysis for high-symmetry molecules.

Semi-classical techniques, such as the Potential Energy Surfaces, …

Let Digital Technology Lay The Moral Right Of Integrity To Rest, Albert Fang Apr 2011

Let Digital Technology Lay The Moral Right Of Integrity To Rest, Albert Fang

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Many countries protect the moral rights of artists out of a romantic notion that these rights arise out of a deep and inherent tie between artists and their work.' Chief among these rights is the right of integrity, through which artists may prevent changes and mutilation of their art, even if those works and their copyrights have been sold.' The United States has been reluctant to jump on the international moral rights bandwagon, which has earned the United States much criticism from scholars and commentators.' But the right of integrity is an outdated concept for several reasons, and when considered …

Administrative Strategies For Preparing Teaching Candidates To Be Building-Level Technology Change Agents, Richard Rose Feb 2011

Administrative Strategies For Preparing Teaching Candidates To Be Building-Level Technology Change Agents, Richard Rose

Administrative Issues Journal

Teacher education graduates in their early years of service are ill-prepared to act as building-level change agents who can advocate for the enhanced use of technology in the classroom. In this study, a group of experienced teachers seeking the M.Ed. in Educational Technology suggest that the lack of confidence which new teachers show in relation to technology can be traced back to the absence of rigorous technical skill-building in both their Introduction to Educational Technology class and methods classes. These tech-savvy mid-career teachers then identify obstacles to enhancing pre-service teacher education programs with more effective preparation in teaching with technology …

The Impact A Technology Leader And Their Leadership Style Makes In K-12 Classroom Teacher's Implementation Of Technology, Molly S. Smith Jan 2011

The Impact A Technology Leader And Their Leadership Style Makes In K-12 Classroom Teacher's Implementation Of Technology, Molly S. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine how public school technology leaders' leadership styles in Pennsylvania schools impact K-12 classroom teachers' integration of technology. The study collected data using two online surveys, the MLQ and LoTi, which measured leadership styles and levels of technology integration. Despite the large sample size of 500 school districts, a low response rate of 5.6% resulted. While demographic data and descriptive statistics could be analyzed, it was not possible to run meaningful analytical statistics to show if correlations existed between technology leaders' leadership styles and classroom technology integration. A number of limitations were identified …

Typographic And Image Explorations, Ben Rupp Jan 2011

Typographic And Image Explorations, Ben Rupp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

These typographic and image based designs explore multiple components of design including: legibility, manipulation, communication, and conventionalism with an emphasis on information graphics. Drawing from influences of the Futurist designers and Dadaist typography, I take the mundane details of an object such as a baseball or car to create excessive amounts of visually stimulating graphics. Through this process of gathering detailed information, I take photographs, draw by hand and scan images to fully understand and portray an objects identity until I feel satisfied that the objects visual potential has been exhausted. These personal expressions are combined to form printed material …

Picbreeder: A Case Study In Collaborative Evolutionary Exploration Of Design Space, Jimmy Secretan, Nicholas Beato, David B. D'Ambrosio, Adelein Rodriguez, Adam Campbell, Jeremiah T. Folsom-Kovarik, Kenneth O. Stanley Jan 2011

Picbreeder: A Case Study In Collaborative Evolutionary Exploration Of Design Space, Jimmy Secretan, Nicholas Beato, David B. D'Ambrosio, Adelein Rodriguez, Adam Campbell, Jeremiah T. Folsom-Kovarik, Kenneth O. Stanley

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

For domains in which fitness is subjective or difficult to express formally, interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) is a natural choice. It is possible that a collaborative process combining feedback from multiple users can improve the quality and quantity of generated artifacts. Picbreeder, a large-scale online experiment in collaborative interactive evolution (CIE), explores this potential. Picbreeder is an online community in which users can evolve and share images, and most importantly, continue evolving others' images. Through this process of branching from other images, and through continually increasing image complexity made possible by the underlying neuroevolution of augmenting topologies (NEAT) algorithm, evolved …

The California Resale Royalty Act: Droit De [Not So] Suite, Emily Eschenbach Barker Jan 2011

The California Resale Royalty Act: Droit De [Not So] Suite, Emily Eschenbach Barker

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

It is a generally accepted principal that an artist owns certain rights to exploit the economic value of his works. In the United States an artist's rights are protected by various provisions of the federal copyright laws. These pecuniary rights exist largely in the same form across the globe, however, some countries, and now the state of California, have begun to recognize personal rights of artists in their work. These moral rights, or droit moral, are retained by the artist even after a work is sold. The particular moral right that my manuscript is concerned with is the droit de …

Perceptions And Experiences Of Diverse Architectural Technology Students Learning Through Formative Feedback & Formative Assessment: A Multiple-Case Study, Catherine Prunty Jan 2011

Perceptions And Experiences Of Diverse Architectural Technology Students Learning Through Formative Feedback & Formative Assessment: A Multiple-Case Study, Catherine Prunty

Masters

Technological leaps along with increased numbers and greater student diversity is altering the higher education teaching landscape constantly. The academic's workload is escalating all the time, arising from resource constraints in a time of economic stringency. This places even more pressure on dealing with assessment rather than on enhancing learning. Despite evidence that supports formative assessment as being vitally important to students' learning, it is not widely appreciated among lecturers in higher education. As a result, lecturers under pressure, understandably, will maintain existing assessment and teaching systems rather than attempt to apply new techniques. Immeasurable hours, days or even weeks, …

The Effects Of A Ratio-Based Teaching Sequence On Performance In Fraction Equivalency For Students With Mathematics Disabilities, Jessica H. Hunt Jan 2011

The Effects Of A Ratio-Based Teaching Sequence On Performance In Fraction Equivalency For Students With Mathematics Disabilities, Jessica H. Hunt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of a ratio-based supplemental teaching sequence on third grade students‘ equivalent fraction performance as measured by a curriculum-based measure and a standardized test. Participants included students identified as being learning disabled in mathematics (MLD), struggling (SS), or typically achieving (TA). Nineteen students were assigned to the experimental group and 19 additional students formed the control group. The difference between the two groups was that the experimental group received the ratio-based teaching sequence. Both groups continued to receive textbook based instruction in fraction equivalency concepts in their regular mathematics classroom. Qualitative interviews were employed to further …

Visualizing Law In The Age Of The Digital Baroque: Arabesques & Entanglements, Richard K. Sherwin Jan 2011

Visualizing Law In The Age Of The Digital Baroque: Arabesques & Entanglements, Richard K. Sherwin

Books

Visualizing Law in the Age of the Digital Baroque explores the profound impact that visual digital technologies are having on the practice and theory of law. Today, lawyers, judges, and lay jurors face a vast array of visual evidence and visual argument. From videos documenting crimes and accidents to computer displays of their digital simulation, increasingly, the search for fact-based justice inside the courtroom is becoming an offshoot of visual meaning making. But when law migrates to the screen it lives there as other images do, motivating belief and judgment on the basis of visual delight and unconscious fantasies and …

The Graphic Novel: A Frontier Literary Form Edges Towards The English Classroom, Malgorzata Pflueger-Pieczynska Jan 2011

The Graphic Novel: A Frontier Literary Form Edges Towards The English Classroom, Malgorzata Pflueger-Pieczynska

All ETDs from UAB

Graphic novels, as not yet fully researched and examined forms under academia, suffer from their association in the public mind with the advertisement industry and cheap subject matter. This negative affiliation is especially popular in teachers' circles that use the graphic novel mostly as an instrument to improve reading skills rather than to present it as an extraordinary example of a frontier literary form. The graphic novel is one of many products that took off dynamically with the technological revolution using the visual as a communication's medium. Visual communication is not only one of the leading forms of passing information, …
