(Re)Placing Nation: Postcolonial Women's Contestations Of Spatial Discourse, Michelle N. Ramlagan
(Re)Placing Nation: Postcolonial Women's Contestations Of Spatial Discourse, Michelle N. Ramlagan
Open Access Dissertations
“(Re)Placing Nations: Postcolonial Women’s Contestations of Spatial Discourses” reads the proliferation of literary representations of landscapes in recent work by Jamaica Kincaid, Shani Mootoo, Edwidge Danticat, Yvonne Vera, Monica Arac de Nyeko and Toni Morrison as a trope for rethinking the nation as a space with physical boundaries. In this project I make the distinction between space as an ideological construct and place as a physical entity. Both place and space are connected to ideologies yet have specific implications for constructions of gender and sexuality. My project considers the dual yet dialectically related processes of creating physical space and identity …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Rural African American Millennials At Predominantly White Institutions, Corey Guyton
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Rural African American Millennials At Predominantly White Institutions, Corey Guyton
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of rural African American Millennials attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and how they make meaning of these experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with six students (graduate and undergraduate) who identified as being from a rural area, African American (or Black), and a Millennial. Seven major themes emerged from the study: the presence of college aspirations, desire to attend a historically Black college or university (HBCU), experiencing culture shock, lack of academic preparation, experiencing microaggressions, lack of parental involvement, and no desire to return home after graduation. Some major themes …
Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration, Tukufu Zuberi
Critical Race Theory: A Commemoration, Tukufu Zuberi
Connecticut Law Review
Kimberld Williams Crenshaw's Twenty Years of Critical Race Theory: Looking Back To Move Forward calls for a broader definition of CRT and for the next phase of this movement to embrace scholars from a multitude of disciplines. The tradition of critical theories of race in the social sciences is intimately related to the CRT Movement developed in the law. The social sciences are an important part of the realization of Crenshaw's aspirations. This Article argues that Crenshaw's call is visionary and a necessary step for researchers interested in the end of white supremacy and the elevation of the human sciences …

Harput, Turkey To Massachusetts: Immigration Of Jacobite Christians, Sargon Donabed, Shamiran Mako
Harput, Turkey To Massachusetts: Immigration Of Jacobite Christians, Sargon Donabed, Shamiran Mako
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
This essay falls into the category of rendering visible a community, the Jacobite Assyrians of Massachusetts, who have remained virtually unknown in the larger context of Middle Eastern Diaspora studies and American ethnic and cultural history. This brief study of the immigration of the Jacobite Christians originally from Harput, Turkey who settled in New England, shows a variety of distinct method(s) of identity preservation and transmission to subsequent generations, expecially in regard to personal and group identity structures. These people, sometimes referred to as “Jacobite Syrians” by early Western travelers and missionaries, identified themselves as the “sons of Asshur” in …
