Ptsd Treatment-Seeking Among Rural Latino Combat Veterans: A Review Of The Literature, Michael R. Duke, Roland S. Moore, Genevieve M. Ames
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Latino combat soldiers report both higher prevalence and greater overall severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms than non-Hispanic Caucasians. However, these veterans face unique social and cultural barriers to accessing treatment for PTSD that distinguish them from their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Latino veterans who reside in rural settings face additional socio-cultural and structural impediments, in that they are likely to reside far from VA (Veterans Administration) medical facilities, have limited access to public transportation, and hold more conservative views toward mental health treatment than those residing in urban locales. However, little is known about the unique individual, sociocultural, and …

The Economic And Cultural Impacts Of Veterans On Rural America: The Case Of Iowa, Dan Krier, C. Richard Stockner, Paul Lasley
The Economic And Cultural Impacts Of Veterans On Rural America: The Case Of Iowa, Dan Krier, C. Richard Stockner, Paul Lasley
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Rural America has long been a crucial supplier of recruits and civilian personnel to the U.S. military. Rural America is also an essential source of cultural and political support for military activity. After their tours of duty have ended, many veterans return to rural communities where they continue to carry the values of their military experiences and extend military traditions into rural culture. Far away from the Pentagon and other corridors of military power live millions of geographically-dispersed rural veterans whose Veterans Administration benefits (cash payments, loans, medical care) and retirement pensions flow into, and become a crucial economic support …

Some archeological sites in Java, Bali, and Sumatra do not have historical data. This is because during the research, there has not been found any documents relating to the existence of the artifacts. The reconstruction of the relation between the sites and their history were made through analyzing the folk stories and local beliefs about the artifacts. Some of the artifacts are in the forms of temples, gates, water springs (source of holy water during the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Java), stairs, caves for meditation, and layers of stones, such as found in Candi Bima (the Bima temple), Goa Jaran (the …

Existentialism By Soren Aabye Kierke Gaard: Indiana In Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade As A Representation Of An “Authentic” Human Being, Chintia Asmiliasari
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Existentialism of Soren Aabye Kierkegaard is a study focusing on the individual existence as an authentic creature. Existentialism can only be achieved by an individual’s boldness and belief to commit responsibly to a decision he has made. The decision made by each individual should be based on his subjective truth and should not be influenced by the collective truth called the objective truth. The subjective truth will later lead each individual to his way finding an absolute truth, although despair and uncertainty haunt every decision he has made. A totality of believing in making decision and holding the commitment into …

As the concepts of “West” and “East are not only recognized in area studies, they are also known in the study of culture. Both concepts represent a culture, of which they are not always in agreement, but are often opposition, one against another. Shalimar the Clown, a novel by Salman Rushdie presents “West” and “East” using India for its main background. The research analysizes Boonyi Kaul Noman, one of the main characters, who shook the dichotomi of West against East within the paradigms of Orientalism and Occidentalism. The discussion on the construction of East defines the relationship between the locality …

What Do Students Need To Know? How About The Idea Of Progress ?, David Pickus
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Studying Archeology needs an understanding of the idea of progress. The concept of progress was popular in the 1920s, and it was not for Archeology alone, but it became a new intellectual understanding of the world. “The idea of progress is one of the fundamental notions grappled by civilizations with a historical sense“. “Does this change in the use of metals equal development?,” reminds us to the Xuanyuan era where stone was used to make weapon, whereas jade in the time of Huangdi, and bronze in the time of Yu. This shows that Archeology is related to history and some …

The Character And The Spatial Concepts Of Cakranegara The Historical City Of Indonesia As An Alternative Urban Design, Lalu Mulyadi
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
The main challenge in Indonesian urban conservation efforts is to determine how changes can meet our current needs without jeopardizing its unique character. Cakranegara, Lombok is one of the towns that have unique character and concept for its spatial organization. This research seeks to define the character of Cakranegara by outlining the spatial city concepts in relation to the physical character based on the socio-cultural and religious principles using questionnaires, mental mapping, visual survey and interviews. The results indicate that the grid pattern, settlement blocks and the positioning of the east-west temples have become the specific character of the city. …

Analysis Of Audience Reception On Youtube Towar D Gender Construction In The Music Video If I Were A Boy By Beyonce Knowles, Ria Avriyanty
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Youtube is one of the favorite sites to share videos. Moreover,it facilitates the users to give a free and direct comment toward the videos they watch. The research examines the music video entitled If I Were a Boy (2010) by Beyonce Knowles as well as the authentic responses from the viewers in Youtube. I argue that this music video creates a conventional gender construction which perpetuates the patriarchal norms in the society. As an attempt to give a new perspective on the similar kind of research, I do not stop at this point. Applying the concept of encoding-decoding by Stuart …

The Javanese wayang performance reflects some ethical values that express the attitudes and norms of the Javanese people. The wayang stories bring into focus some elements of the culture, such as customs, arts, way of life, mysticism, and religion. The characters of the wayang performance depict some ways of life and mind-sets of the Javanese of an understanding of the final destination of life, sangkan paraning dumadi, which is a longing to be united with God at the end of their life. This research note essentially highlights how an argumentation was developed to reveal the implicit tensions that had been part of the American foreign policy maneuvers in Asia-Pacific, and the locus that were expressed have caused controversy. The finding is an effort to formulate analysis of the American foreign policy through an understanding of the nature of paradoxal and tension in the general American foreign policy, specifically in Asia-Pacific. Possibilities And Limits Of Comparative Literature Today, Darío Villanueva
Possibilities And Limits Of Comparative Literature Today, Darío Villanueva
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Possibilities and Limits of Comparative Literature Today," Darío Villanueva traces the itinerary of comparative literature over the last fifty years comparative literature in its various stages. The first of these confronted two options seen in a way as irreconcilable: the almost exclusive connexion with literary history or its identification with the theory of literature. Villanueva outlines the consolidation of the "new paradigm" which overcomes those contradictions, thanks to the methodological cooperation between comparative literature and the systemic theories of literature, and thanks, as well, to a return to philology as an adequate practice of reading. In addition, …
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Geography and Comparative Literature" César Domínguez analyzes the relevance of political and linguistic frameworks for comparative literary historiography in the context of the European Union. Domínguez's discussion is based on the notion of geoculture whose theorization from Immanuel Wallerstein's perspective presents paradigms of interest to comparative literature. The idea of literary geography is conceived as a unit for analyzing diverse stages of the interliterary process. Thus, within the framework of the current renaissance of Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur, the phenomena of the literatures of (im)migration, exile, and literary diglossia represent challenges for the contextualization and …

Indonesia Law Review
The conception of Intellectual Property Right (IPR) is generally misunderstood by among common people. In order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of IPR, we may as well start with the most dominant point of view, namely that from the perspective of the State and Government. This point of view is dominant because the State and Government are the institutions which havethe authority to make law, to implement law and to interpret the law in the various forms of itsimplementation. A study of IPR can be taken from wider view, as cultural perspectivetake the approach of looking at various events related …

It is important to consider the effects of past conflicts on the current perceptions of the people of Cyprus and of the future generations. This thesis contends that the ongoing division of Cyprus along with the many unresolved issues regarding past conflicts have had a profound effect on how the people of Cyprus perceive new information in regard to their future. The inquiry will explore the historical background of Cyprus and the affects of nationalism. The need for enemies, large group identity, divided societies and the need for dialogue will also be examined in relation to perception and new information. …
Cookbooks: Preserving Jewish Tradition, Daniel Feinberg, Alice Crosetto
Cookbooks: Preserving Jewish Tradition, Daniel Feinberg, Alice Crosetto
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
Culinary traditions have played an integral role in the Jewish religion from its very beginning. Families have continually passed down these traditions from one generation to the next as a means to preserve Jewish culture as well as to maintain their Jewish identity. The authors propose that one of the methods of preserving and transmitting these culinary traditions, traditions clearly rooted in oral tradition, has been through the cookbook. While the written cookbook continues to be popular and marketable, traditional cookbook contents are becoming increasingly available online. In saving recipes for future generations, cookbooks preserve religious, cultural, and traditional elements …
Agriculture In Sub-Saharan Africa, Troy M. Null
Agriculture In Sub-Saharan Africa, Troy M. Null
Rollins Undergraduate Research Journal
According to the World Food Programme, with the exception of Haiti, all of the world’s countries that experienced a malnourishment rate of 35% of the population or higher last year are located in sub-Saharan Africa. Of the nearly one billion hungry people in the world, one quarter of them are of them are Africans. Why is it that they are not better-able to feed themselves (or others, for that matter) with their vast amounts of undeveloped land? The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the historical and developing influences of globalization and gender on agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, and …

This paper attempts to give an overview of the field of health literacy and includes: a brief background with current definitions; a description of screening and measurement tools; a discussion of aspects of limited literacy; the implications for quality health care; …
Scholarly Inbreeding In Latin American Academically Managed Journals, Erwin Krauskopf
Scholarly Inbreeding In Latin American Academically Managed Journals, Erwin Krauskopf
Higher Learning Research Communications
From a bibliometric perspective, scholarly inbreeding has been identified in journals through the excessive use of both author and journal self-citations. However, editorial bias toward researchers from the same institution as the editorial management team has seldom been considered. According to the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, this occurs when a journal publishes more than 20% of documents authored by researchers affiliated with the same institution as the editorial management team. The purpose of this study is to establish the extent to which 81 Latin American journals managed by universities publish intramural documents (defined as those published by its …
