The blood–brain barrier is a restrictive interface between the brain parenchyma and the intravascular compartment. Tight junctions contribute to the integrity of the blood–brain barrier. Hypoxic–ischemic damage to the blood–brain barrier could be an important component of fetal brain injury. We hypothesized that increases in blood–brain barrier permeability after ischemia depend upon the duration of reperfusion and that decreases in tight junction proteins are associated with the ischemia-related impairment in blood–brain barrier function in the fetus. Blood–brain barrier function was quantified with the blood-to-brain transfer constant (Ki) and tight junction proteins by Western immunoblot in fetal sheep …

Quantification Of The Impacts Of Water Hyacinth On Riparian Communities In Cameroon And Assessment Of An Appropriate Method Of Control : The Case Of The Wouri River Basin, Jenette Tifuh. Mujingni Epse Cho
World Maritime University Dissertations
Some plants, when transported to non-endemic areas undergo reproduction and rapid growth and will out-compete native plants and become weeds. These weeds then become troublesome giving rise to socioeconomic and environmental impacts. Water hyacinth (Eicchornia crassipes), one of such weeds is often considered the world’s worst invasive aquatic species of weed, indigenous to the Amazon Basin of South America and has spread over the years to various areas in Africa and Asia. This dissertation analyses the problem of water hyacinth infestation in the Wouri River Basin, done through the quantification of its socio-economic and environmental impacts on riparian communities. It …

On Land (Wealth) Distribution: A Cultural Approach To Justice In Indonesia, Suparjo Suparjo
On Land (Wealth) Distribution: A Cultural Approach To Justice In Indonesia, Suparjo Suparjo
Indonesia Law Review
This article re-examines the Indonesian land distribution policy in light of Pancasila , the five core values of the Indonesian constitution. Furthermore, the article also analyzes social problems in Indonesia from the legal and cultural point of view. Inspired by Javanese shadow puppet plays and Pancasila values, analysis shows that that land distribution policy in Indonesia does not support the goal of the country. The policy does not adhere to Pancasila values and the cultural values adopted by the Indonesian people. Hence I will try to give a recommendation for better regulation in land distribution. Evidences will be given to …
Cookbooks: Preserving Jewish Tradition, Daniel Feinberg, Alice Crosetto
Cookbooks: Preserving Jewish Tradition, Daniel Feinberg, Alice Crosetto
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
Culinary traditions have played an integral role in the Jewish religion from its very beginning. Families have continually passed down these traditions from one generation to the next as a means to preserve Jewish culture as well as to maintain their Jewish identity. The authors propose that one of the methods of preserving and transmitting these culinary traditions, traditions clearly rooted in oral tradition, has been through the cookbook. While the written cookbook continues to be popular and marketable, traditional cookbook contents are becoming increasingly available online. In saving recipes for future generations, cookbooks preserve religious, cultural, and traditional elements …
An Irrational Oversight: Applying The Plra's Fee Restrictions To Collateral Prisoner Litigation, Walker Newell
An Irrational Oversight: Applying The Plra's Fee Restrictions To Collateral Prisoner Litigation, Walker Newell
City University of New York Law Review
The Federal Prison Litigation Reform Act precludes prisoners from filing lawsuits in forma pauperis and imposes significant limitations on the recovery of attorney’s fees. Many states have followed the lead of Congress by prohibiting their courts from waiving filing fees in prisoner cases. The federal fee provisions have withstood a barrage of constitutional challenges, with courts uniformly holding that the provisions are rationally related to a legitimate government interest in deterring frivolous inmate litigation. Many courts, however, apply these fee restrictions in a manner that cannot be justified by the analysis generally supporting the constitutionality of the provisions. In both …
The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
The Spatial Turn In Literary Historiography, Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Spatial Turn in Literary Historiography," Fernando Cabo Aseguinolaza examines the spatialization of literary history in recent years. He evaluates the resurgence of interest in literary geography and argues that the geographic dimension is not the only aspect of the predominant spatiality in new literary histories. Further, Cabo Aseguinolaza postulates that although the emphasis on spatiality marks many current literary histories, all literary histories imply spatial elements of different character and scope and that these options constitute an essential part of the performative capacity of history writing. In particular, Cabo Aseguinolaza discusses categories proposed by Henri Lefebvre …

Comics And The Graphic Novel In Spain And Iberian Galicia, Antonio J. Gil González
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Comics and the Graphic Novel in Spain and Iberian Galicia," Antonio J. Gil González develops a comparative and interart analysis of graphic novels by examining the evolution of the genre on the Spanish peninsula in general and in Galicia in particular. Gil González builds his analysis on Roman Ingarden's concept of literature as not only traditional fiction, but also theater and cinema. Gil González presents his argumentation by identifying the peculiarities of the comic as a medium, starting with its historical beginnings, and discussing its principal formats and generic and thematic variants. Further, he discusses the principal …

The Don Juan Myth In Iberian Galician Literature, Carmen Becerra Suárez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Don Juan Myth in Iberian Galician Literature" Carmen Becerra Suárez discusses the presence of the Don Juan myth as it has developed in Galicia. She presents a panorama of the ways in which Galician authors — studies independently of their belonging to the Galician or Spanish literary systems — have dealt with this myth. The aim is to study the presence of the myth in this culture and the causes giving rise to several versions: from the three possibilities of "Don Juanness" found in the work of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán up through a short story …

The Ophelia Motif In The Work Of Iberian Galician Writers, María Do Cebreiro Rábade Villar
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "About the Ophelia Motif in the Work of Iberian Galician Writers" María do Cebreiro Rábade Villar attempts to arrive at an idea of character through a comparative analysis of various artistic versions of William Shakespeare's Ophelia. Rábade Villar employs Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's notions of transversality and devices of analytical enunciation in order to understand the feminine literary character. Rábade Villar's corpus of the Ophelia motif include Iberian Galician authors's work such as by Álvaro Cunqueiro, Xohana Torres, Chus Pato, and Marta Dacosta.
Landscape In Irish And Iberian Galician Poetry By Women Authors, Manuela Palacios González
Landscape In Irish And Iberian Galician Poetry By Women Authors, Manuela Palacios González
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Landscape in Irish and Iberian Galician Poetry by Women Authors" Manuela Palacios González reflects on the similarities between Irish and Galician women poets with regard to their treatment of landscape. Although Ireland and Galicia have been construed as green, fertile Arcadias, contemporary Irish and Galician women poets have engaged in a radical revision of this anachronistic stereotype. Women poets of these two communities suggest in their works that there is more than a chronological coincidence between a growing ecological awareness and the increased presence of women writers in the last thirty years. Both ecocriticism and ecofeminist literary …

Using Video And Contact To Change Attitudes Toward Gay Men And Lesbians, Jonna J. Cooley, Gary J. Burkholder
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Prejudice against gay men and lesbians has continued to fuel negative attitudes that are perpetuated by stereotypes and by validation from those within one’s own social group. While there has been some research regarding the impact of contact on attitudes, the present study expands the theoretical approach of Allport and the empirical work of researchers such as Herek to examine the impact of adding media to interactive contact with lesbian and gay individuals. Participants were placed into one of three treatment groups: control, video only, and video plus contact with gay men and lesbians. The sample included 106 undergraduate students …

Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 Expression And Structural Changes In Biomechanical Loaded Articular Cartilage, Jue-Long Wang, Shu-Fen Sun, Chiao-Wen Hwang, Ko-Long Lin, Pei-Te Hsu, Yu-Ling Wang, Zhang-Yu Hoe
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background: Cartilage functions as a highly successful load-bearing tissue. However, frequent mechanical loading can affect cartilage metabolism and viability significantly. Intrinsic changes in the metabolism of chondrocytes have also been proposed as an important feature of osteoarthritis. Although many aspects of chondrocyte catabolism have been extensively investigated, the signals that initiate such metabolic changes, and their correlation with structural changes, remain unclear. We hypothesized that matrix metaproteinase-3 (MMP-3) may play a significant role. The purpose of this study was to investigate the activity of MMP-3 in cartilage under load, as well as degeneration-related structural changes of the cartilage matrix under …
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
Literary Geography And Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Geography and Comparative Literature" César Domínguez analyzes the relevance of political and linguistic frameworks for comparative literary historiography in the context of the European Union. Domínguez's discussion is based on the notion of geoculture whose theorization from Immanuel Wallerstein's perspective presents paradigms of interest to comparative literature. The idea of literary geography is conceived as a unit for analyzing diverse stages of the interliterary process. Thus, within the framework of the current renaissance of Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur, the phenomena of the literatures of (im)migration, exile, and literary diglossia represent challenges for the contextualization and …
About Literary Systems And National Literatures, Elias J. Torres Feijó
About Literary Systems And National Literatures, Elias J. Torres Feijó
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "About Literary Systems and National Literatures," Elias Torres J. Feijó offers a polysystemic analysis with examples from the Iberian Peninsula. He argues that a community's literature can be understood as a) the gathering of so-called literary activities, which take place in a social space or b) something that identifies certain characteristics of a part or the whole of the members in a given social space. For his analysis, Torres Feijó employs Itamar Even-Zohar's notion of polysystem because it allows us to interpret each system generated by members of a given community and its delimitation, differentiation, and integration …

Advertising And Autobiographical Discourse, María Ángeles Rodríguez Fontela
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Advertising and Autobiographical Discourse" María Ángeles Rodríguez Fontela sketches a poetics of advertising in autobiographic discourse working from a selection of narrative and autobiographical spots. Emphasized in her narratological study is the contraction of retrospective temporality, the domination of the proleptic construction of the "I," the ellipsis in the outcome, the iterative and archetypical character of the narrated episodes, the confidential tone of the narrative voice, and the mythical projection of the narrated story. Rodríguez Fontela analyzes in selected television advertisements the ironic, comic, and parodic effects which show the hybridization of genres and the rhetorical function …

The Library And The Librarian As A Theme In Literature, Teresa Vilariño Picos
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Library and the Librarian as a Theme in Literature," Teresa Vilariño Picos explores in several languages and genres (literature, cinema, television), the image of the library and the librarian. Vilariño Picos argues that the image of the library and the librarian often refer the reader or viewer to a perception where the space of books represents universal humanity and knowledge despite the often negative view depicted. In Vilariño Picos's discussion particular attention is paid to the works of Elias Canetti, Jorge Luis Borges, Umberto Eco, and David Lodge in literature and Alain Resnais film and Manolo …
Onshore Ballast Water Treatment Stations : A Harbour Specific Vector Management Proposition, Lawrence A. Kuroshi
Onshore Ballast Water Treatment Stations : A Harbour Specific Vector Management Proposition, Lawrence A. Kuroshi
World Maritime University Dissertations
The discharge of Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens (HAOP) found in ships ballast water from one port environment to another can have severe ecological, environmental and economic consequences, especially when they transform into marine pests. This informs the necessity to investigate treatment options that could curtail the transfer of these organisms from a source harbour. An alternative to the conventional Ballast Water Treatment Systems is investigated and proposed in this study- it entails the onshore treatment of host port water before it is loaded as ballast water into ships. The study covered sampling of Port Harcourt Harbour water in Nigeria. …

Global Approach And Regional Cooperation Of Black Sea Countries On The Problem Of Invasive Species, Anna Rabotnova
Global Approach And Regional Cooperation Of Black Sea Countries On The Problem Of Invasive Species, Anna Rabotnova
World Maritime University Dissertations
The productivity of water ecosystems plays a significant role in the development of human society. People delimitate oceans and the seas, however, ocean creatures are not familiar with those boundaries exist for them. They freely “travel” all over the world in and on ships, invade new ecosystems and harm them. Invasive alien species are now globally recognized as one of the biggest problems in shipping, which impacts environment, social economics and human health. Due to the international nature of shipping, it is positively to eliminate the problem of invasive species, but only to find the most efficient ways of controlling …
