Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I would like to focus my remarks this morning by drawing upon the research that shows how organizations have led change and renewal through innovation and creativity. I believe that the topic “Intrapreneurship”, i.e. entrepreneurial behavior within an organization is quite distinct and vast and requires separate discussion and discourse. I would therefore draw upon liberally from the seminal work of Michael Tushman of Columbia Graduate Business School and Charles O’Reilly on how innovation and creativity have found their way into mid to large Corporations. The biggest challenge facing the well established and well entrenched Corporations is: How can they …

Integrating Project Change Management Learning Into An Academic Course On It Project Management, Mikaela A. Nweke Ms.

Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects

Within project management, little attention has been devoted to controlling and facilitating changes when constraints of a project have been changed such as scope, time, cost, or quality, also known as Project Change Management (Arami, 2008). Growing statistics prove it is imperative for students finishing IT programs to acquire an understanding of project change management (PCM) for industry preparation. The U.S. spent 3.28 billion dollars on global change management and accountability projects for technology (roughly one-third of the total budget for global change) in the year 2000; this percentage still continues to rise (Goncalves, 2007). As a result, students must …

Quintessential Acts Of Inquiry In Educational Practice: Delineating Inquiry And Interpretation In The Pursuit Of Teacher Professionalization, Ted Purinton Dec 2010

Quintessential Acts Of Inquiry In Educational Practice: Delineating Inquiry And Interpretation In The Pursuit Of Teacher Professionalization, Ted Purinton

i.e.: inquiry in education

Sociological and political theories on the professions indicate that established professions utilize unique forms of inquiry and interpretation to guide practice. This essay argues that for teaching to become professionalized, unique forms of inquiry and interpretation need to be emphasized. Utilizing the concept of professional jurisdiction, the essay argues that other professions' forms of inquiry, while not detrimental to the purpose of teacher professionalization, do not establish the distinctive skills upon which teachers can lay claim.

Service Design And Healthcare Innovation: Fr0m Consumption To Co-Production And Co-Creation, Karine Freire, Daniela Sangiorgi

ServDes Conference Series

In the last decades the economy saw two significant changes in the way value has been conceived and created: the introduction of the value-constellation model and the advent of the open innovation movement. This paper will report on how these paradigmatic changes are mirrored in public services reform; with a focus on healthcare services; and on how Design practice and research are contributing to this shift. The authors will use four case studies of healthcare design-driven service innovation as a way to reflect on which models and approaches designers have been using and to evaluate the actual results and impacts …

Transformative Services And Transformation Design, Daniela Sangiorgi Dec 2010

Transformative Services And Transformation Design, Daniela Sangiorgi

ServDes Conference Series

This paper claims how the parallel evolution of the conception of services and of Design for Services toward more transformational aims; would require a collective reflection on and elaboration of guiding methodological and deontological principles. By illustrating connections with similar evolutions in Participatory Design (from ‘Design for use before use’ to ‘Design for Design after Design’); Public Health Research (patient engagement and ‘empowerment’) and Consumer Research (Transformative Consumer Research); the author identifies key characteristics of transformative practices that ask for more ‘reflexivity’ on the designers’ side. Developing Design profession as contributing to society transformative aims is extremely valuable; but it …

The Greening Of Strategic Hrm Scholarship, Susan E. Jackson, Janghoon Seo Dec 2010

The Greening Of Strategic Hrm Scholarship, Susan E. Jackson, Janghoon Seo

Organization Management Journal

The topic of environmental sustainability is attracting increased attention among management scholars. Despite its importance to managers, employees, customers and other stakeholders, however, there is very little scholarship that considers the role of human resource management systems in organizations striving to achieve environmental sustainability. In this article, we propose several specific questions that such scholarship could address. By seeking answers to these questions, HRM scholars could contribute to improved organizational effectiveness and at the same time develop new theoretical models that more adequately reflect the complexity of organizational phenomena.

Non-Patient Laboratory Outreach Testing Feasibility Study For A Community Hospital Laboratory, Krista S. Montano Dec 2010

Non-Patient Laboratory Outreach Testing Feasibility Study For A Community Hospital Laboratory, Krista S. Montano

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

An assessment of the feasibility was conducted for developing, and implementing a new service that would accept non-patient specimens for testing in a community hospital laboratory. The service would improve the delivery of healthcare services for patient, physician, and community through the recommendations. Costs persistently rise and shortages amongst physicians and other patient care personnel are climbing. Supporting our community and system physicians by offering high quality laboratory testing in a timely manner with consultative services offered by pathology reinforces a community hospital’s commitment to improving the physician experience. Diagnostic laboratory testing is a critical piece in treating patients, and …

International Education

School and work organizations are operating in an increasingly global world. Meeting different people and groups is part of daily learning situations. The diversity of student and work communities can change from putting up with difference into conscious learning from dissimilarity in interaction. Intercultural education emphasizes the personal encounter of difference in another person and mutual learning. Internationalization and the effects of a global economy can be seen in the changes concerning work and the workplace as well as in the mobility of the labor force. There is a demand for intercultural competencies not only in business life, but also …

Mainstreaming Evaluation: Four Case Studies Of Systematic Evaluation Integrated Into Organizational Culture And Practices, Amy M. Gullickson

Dissertations

Following a literature review, a researcher generated a descriptive theory of evaluation mainstreaming, the integration of systematic evaluation into the culture, systems, and job responsibilities of organizations. She then explored the validity and generalizability of the theory in the National Science Foundation’s grant-funded Advanced Technological Education Program using mixed methods research. Four centers were chosen based on quantitative survey responses which suggested that the organizations were likely to be mainstreaming evaluation. For each center, the researcher conducted a site visit, interviews, and document review to understand (i) the processes by and extent to which evaluation became part of everyday operations; …

Deadly Discourse: Negotiating Bureaucratic Consensus For The Final Solution Through Organizational And Technical Communication, Mark Ward Sr Dec 2010

Deadly Discourse: Negotiating Bureaucratic Consensus For The Final Solution Through Organizational And Technical Communication, Mark Ward Sr

All Dissertations

The Final Solution was largely accomplished in eleven months; its executors, the Nazi SS, faced the constant problem that as killing and plunder escalated so did internal competition and corruption; and the SS deliberately cultivated an intensely competitive and polycratic organizational culture that fit the Nazi worldview of life-as-struggle. By tying these three observations together—that the Final Solution was punctuated, entropic, and polycratic—the problem arises: How did SS organizational communications manage, just barely long enough, to create a temporary social reality that regulated the internal contradictions of its genocidal project and fragmented bureaucracy? This study contends that through its organizational …

Pricing Orientation In Industrial Markets: The Organizational Transformation To Value-Based Pricing, Stephan M. Liozu

Student Scholarship

Of three main orientations to pricing in industrial markets cost-based, competition-based and customer value-based most marketing and pricing scholars consider the latter superior but few firms use it. The literature is silent about how organizational and behavioral characteristics of industrial firms may affect pricing orientation and, more specifically, value-based pricing. Semi-structured interviews with 44 managers of small to medium size U.S. industrial firms yielded insights into firm pricing orientations, processes and decision making patterns. We identified five organizational characteristics common to firms implementing value-based pricing: ability to effect deep transformational change, presence of a champion, skill in diffusing organizational capabilities, …
