The Chief Judge was introduced, first, by CUNY Law Review Editor-in-Chief Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan who commended him for his commitment to fully-funded legal services. The Chief Judge was then introduced by Dean Michelle Anderson who lauded him for his leadership with the Launch Pad for Justice Program, and Professor Natalie Gomez-Velez who …

Advocacy For Tenant And Community Empowerment: Reflections On My First Year In Practice, Shekar Krishnan
City University of New York Law Review
In May 2009, the landlord of a rent-stabilized building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn openly declared his intention to force out the current tenants if they did not leave on their own. Located on North 8th Street right off trendy Bedford Avenue, the property was prime real estate in Williamsburg. The only obstacles that stood between the landlord and the potential for him to reap large profits were the rent-stabilized status of the building and all the tenants who paid the regulated rent, a fraction of the market rate. Once he forced those tenants to leave, he could “gut rehab” the apartments, …

Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research focused on East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Management and Marketing Alumni who graduated between 2003 and 2008. Based on the available literature and research on this topic, there was a limited amount of specific information as to the careers these alumni seek. As a means to gather data about the careers management and marketing alumni pursue, an online survey was used, which also supported three specified objectives. In summarized form these objectives are: non-corporate career choices and certain factors that influence entrepreneurship, B.B.A. Management and Marketing Alumni careers (or employment), and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) or multinational …

The Future Of The Gender Wage Gap In The American Workforce, Molly K. Merrick
The Future Of The Gender Wage Gap In The American Workforce, Molly K. Merrick
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This thesis aims to accomplish four goals. First, to establish the extent to which a gender wage gap exists in the American workforce and why it matters. Second, it seeks to explore the various factors that scholars have advanced as potential explanations for this gap with the aim of identifying a more concrete and all-encompassing root cause of the gender wage gap as it exists today. Third, this thesis will individually evaluate a succession of equal pay legislation which has been enacted to date in order to discern the effectiveness of previous attempts to address this root cause, as well …

High-Income Child Support Guidelines: Harmonizing The Need For Limits With The Best Interests Of The Child, Laura Raatjes
High-Income Child Support Guidelines: Harmonizing The Need For Limits With The Best Interests Of The Child, Laura Raatjes
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Providing for the needs of children of separated parents lies at the heart of state child support laws. But what about providing for the special needs of children of high-income obligors and ensuring consistency in a system often marked by unpredictability and high emotions? This Note examines the manifold problems that discretionary high-income child support decisions can cause: inequitable settlement, increased litigation, injured family structures, and inconsistent decisions. This Note also proposes a solution: to set higher thresholds for triggering a high-income analysis and to require high-income parents to contribute to post-secondary educational trusts. Finally, this Note explains that, as …

Separation Of Law And State, Talia Fisher
Separation Of Law And State, Talia Fisher
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In the framework of the jurisprudential literature, the law-state bond is assumed as a given. Points of dispute emerge only at more advanced stages of the discussion, with respect to such questions as the duty to obey state law or the appropriate extent of state intervention in social relations. This Article will be devoted to a reconsideration of the presupposition of the law-state link and to challenging the state's status vis-à-vis the law-both in its role as the producer of legal norms and its capacity as the arbiter of disputes.
The Article opens with a comparative elucidation of the Hobbesian …

The courts also decided one case involving an important issue of professionalism and several miscellaneous cases. The State Bar of Georgia Formal Advisory Opinion Board issued several opinions that relate to the professional responsibilities of Georgia lawyers.

The United States' Failure To Ratify The International Covenant On Economic, Social And Cultural Rights: Must The Poor Be Always With Us., Ann M. Piccard
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The United States remains one of only half a dozen U.N. member states that have yet to ratify the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The treaty was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, but no steps toward ratification have ever been taken. Meanwhile, the gap between the rich and the poor in this country continues to grow, and is among the highest of any democracy on earth. The United States is historically suspicious of even recognizing economic, social and cultural rights as “rights” that might be amenable to any method of enforcement. As a result, the …

China's Development Of International Economic Law And Wto Legal Capacity Building, Pasha L. Hsieh
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This article examines legal and institutional aspects of the evolution of China’s approach to the dispute settlement mechanism of the World Trade Organization (WTO). It begins by analyzing the impact of China’s changing attitude toward international law on the escalation of international economic law research. In particular, the article provides the first detailed examination of China’s efforts to strengthen public–private cooperation in building its WTO legal capacity. China established think tanks to bridge the information and communication gaps between the government and industries. To develop its WTO lawyers, the Chinese government has consistently required international law firms to collaborate with …
Selling Knowledge: A Sociological Analysis Of Attorney Advertisement In Las Vegas, Giselle Velasquez
Selling Knowledge: A Sociological Analysis Of Attorney Advertisement In Las Vegas, Giselle Velasquez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
I analyze how Las Vegas attorneys represent themselves, their associates and clients in televised law firm commercials. I use attorney commercials as a case to explore cultural beliefs in media representations. Using an inductive method, I analyze the textual, visual, and aural symbols that appear most frequently in television commercials to interpret how law firm advertisements convey themes of attorney expertise, knowledge, ethnic and gender stereotyping. I introduce this study with a historical evaluation of the rise of advertisement in the United States. I continue discussing how the media is an important realm of discourse that affects people's identity. Using …
