Haunting Witnesses: Diasporic Consciousness In African American And Caribbean Writing, Brandi Bingham Kellett Dec 2010

Haunting Witnesses: Diasporic Consciousness In African American And Caribbean Writing, Brandi Bingham Kellett

Open Access Dissertations

This project examines the ways in which several texts written in the late twentieth century by African American and Caribbean writers appropriate history and witness trauma. I read the representational practices of Toni Morrison, Ernest Gaines, Paule Marshall, and Fred D'Aguiar as they offer distinct approaches to history and the resulting effects such reconstituted, discovered, or, in some cases, imagined histories can have on the affirmation of the self as a subject. I draw my theoretical framework from the spaces of intersection between diaspora and postcolonial theories, enabling me to explore the values of the African diaspora cross-culturally as manifested …

Between Tolerance And Talk: Idiomatic Kinship And Ethnography In The Multiethnic Pacific, Ping-Ann Addo Dec 2010

Between Tolerance And Talk: Idiomatic Kinship And Ethnography In The Multiethnic Pacific, Ping-Ann Addo

Pacific Studies

This paper examines the interplay between identity politics and ethnographic practice among indigenous and mixed-race transnational scholars. Using a genealogical framework, the author explores how kinship—formed through fieldwork—shapes solidarity, tension, and the politics of racial categorization within Pacific research communities. The work reflects on personal experiences navigating complex ethnic identities in Tongan society, revealing how cultural perceptions and adopted kinship challenge dominant race frameworks. Ultimately, the study advocates for a more reflexive and dialogic anthropology that centers mutual racialization, layered identity, and political economy as key to understanding and improving ethnographic engagement.

The Decline Of Black Catholicism: What’S Racial Slavery To Do With It?, Kwame Assenyoh S.V.D. Dec 2010

The Decline Of Black Catholicism: What’S Racial Slavery To Do With It?, Kwame Assenyoh S.V.D.

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

This essay links the current decline of black Catholicism to the racial slavery practiced in Roman Catholicism at its settlement in the USA. Employing missiological anthropological analysis, Assenyoh, S.V.D., argues that the racism that characterized the beginning of New World slavery remains in the Church and accounts for the decline of black Catholicism. Assenyoh calls for persistent critiques of racial slavery in the Church’s history if there must be transformation rather than reformation.

Mapping 'Chinese' Christian Schools In Indonesia: Ethnicity, Class And Religion, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Schools are not ‘‘innocent’’ sites of cultural transmission. They play an active and significant role in transmitting values and inculcating culture. Schools also serve as a site for the maintenance of boundaries and for the construction of identities. Previous studies have recognized the relationship between education and identity. Building on existing literature, this study examines the ways in which Christian schools can be a site for the construction and maintenance of religious, ethnic and class identities of the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia. The study surveys four prestigious ‘‘Chinese’’ Christian schools in Jakarta. Through a brief but thorough profiling of the …

Migration And Transculturation In The Digital Age: A Framework For Studying The “Space Between”, Padmini Banerjee Ph.D., Myna German Ph.D. Nov 2010

Migration And Transculturation In The Digital Age: A Framework For Studying The “Space Between”, Padmini Banerjee Ph.D., Myna German Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Transnational immigrants today appear to live dual or even multiple lives across national borders, with help from a range of new technologies involving media and channels of communication such as Internet-based chat or telephony, mobile phones, and interactive online social networks. The authors explore the implications of accumulated findings on this aspect for researchers and scholars investigating the contemporary experience of global migration in relation to diasporas and their technology-enabled interconnections with home and host societies. Against the context of existing conceptual frameworks, the utility of the multi-dimensional construct of transculturalism (Ortiz, 1995 [1940]), involving the three processes of acculturation, …

Rethinking Missiology In The Context For The 21st Century: Global Demographic Trends And Diaspora Missiology, Enoch Wan Jul 2010

Rethinking Missiology In The Context For The 21st Century: Global Demographic Trends And Diaspora Missiology, Enoch Wan

Great Commission Research Journal

New orientations are required of practitioners/researchers in formulating mission strategy and conducting missiological research in the context of the 21st Century due to the global demographic trends of internal migration to the city and international immigration to countries of the Northwest region. In addition, the center of Christianity has shifted from the Northern hemisphere towards the south and from the post-Christian west to elsewhere; thus new approaches are required. Diaspora missiology will be presented as an alternative to the traditional orientations of farming analogy (e.g. church planting and church growth), territorialization (e.g. home vs. foreign missions, sending vs. receiving) and …

Becoming American: The Socio-Economic And Cultural Landscape Of Kenyan Immigrants In Chicago, Il, Cyril O. Wilson, Chapurukha M. Kusimba

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This study reports the emerging patterns of migration and settlement of Kenyans into the Chicago metropolitan area. Like most African immigrant communities in North America, economic downturn, political instability, and socio-economic polarization in African countries necessitated an appreciable quantum of emigration of Kenyans following the attainment of Africa's political independence in the 1960s. Most of the findings on housing characteristics, education, employment, patterns of family life, socio-cultural interaction, challenges encountered by new immigrants, and related phenomena evince parallels with other studies on African immigrants in North America.

Student Librarian Work Study Programmes In Academic Libraries: An Appraisal, Tinuade O. Adewale, N.A. Ajayi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study explores whether the student work study programme of Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Nigeria programme has lived up to the purpose of its establishment. Existing circulation statistical records and interview were used to elicit information. The results of the appraisal reveal that there are challenges and prospects; and that the programme has complemented staff shortages, assisted indigent students, and contributed to academic excellence of the participating students. It is therefore recommended that more funds should be allocated to the programme and more students should be employed.

Diaspora Knowledge Flows In The Global Economy, Martin Grossman Jan 2010

Diaspora Knowledge Flows In The Global Economy, Martin Grossman

Management Faculty Publications

Globalization has fostered greater rates of mobility and an increasing reliance on transnational networks for commerce, social interaction, and the transfer of knowledge. This is particularly true among diaspora groups who have left their homelands in search of better economic and political environments. Unlike those of the past, today’s migrants stay connected via information and communications technology (ICT). Digital diaspora networks have the potential to reverse brain drain (the flight of human capital resulting from emigration) by facilitating knowledge sharing and technology transfer between the diaspora and the homeland. This paper explores the role that ICT-enabled diasporic networks are playing …

Theorizing Ambivalence In Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema: The Discourse Of Chinese Identity Between The Local And The Global, Chih-Yun Chiang Jan 2010

Theorizing Ambivalence In Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema: The Discourse Of Chinese Identity Between The Local And The Global, Chih-Yun Chiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using ambivalence as a theoretical framework, this study examines Ang Lee's cinematic discourse of Chinese identity, which is co-constructed with the audiences from different cultural communities. I focus on Ang Lee's transnational films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Lust, Caution as my two case studies. By analyzing the audience discourse from Taiwan, Mainland China, and overseas Chinese communities, I am able to conceptualize their reactions as communicative moments that co-construct the meaning of the film text. I suggest that ambivalence is a self-representational strategy for the ethnic "Other," who is historically denied access to representation, to contest and subvert the …

[Review Of] Continuing Perspectives On The Black Diaspora. Revised Edition. Eds. Aubrey W. Bonnett And Calvin B. Holder, Matthew Miller Jan 2010

[Review Of] Continuing Perspectives On The Black Diaspora. Revised Edition. Eds. Aubrey W. Bonnett And Calvin B. Holder, Matthew Miller

Ethnic Studies Review

As a follow-up to their Emerging Perspectives on the Black Diaspora (published in 1990), authors/editors Aubrey Bonnett and Calvin Holder have given another serious treatment of the African diaspora. In this new volume, they take on new trends, ones that are often underappreciated or neglected within the scholarly community. Continuing Perspectives proffers an examination of some of the "new and nuanced challenges which forcibly test the themes of persistence and resilience" of the black diaspora communities (xvii). As the authors proclaim in their introduction, "the essays in this volume [. . .] try to look back, access current positions, and …

Grounding Diaspora In Experience: Niagara Mennonite Identity, Cynthia Anne Jones Jan 2010

Grounding Diaspora In Experience: Niagara Mennonite Identity, Cynthia Anne Jones

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This qualitative case study grounds theoretical notions of diaspora in personal accounts of Russian Mennonites living on the Niagara peninsula of Canada. The focus is on successive, complex interrelationships with ‘place’ (in a fixed sense, and a globally connected sense), with attention to gender, generation, and life-stage. How have these individuals experienced diaspora, and how has this influenced their culture and identity? Interrelationships with place are examined within an analytical framework composed of three key elements as identified in diaspora literature: cultural hybridity, social heterogeneity (internal divisions), and responsibility flows. The results are both descriptive and theoretical, featuring first person …

Making Africans And Indians: Colonialism, Identity, Racialization, And The Rise Of The Nation-State In The Florida Borderlands, 1765-1837, John Paul A. Nuño Jan 2010

Making Africans And Indians: Colonialism, Identity, Racialization, And The Rise Of The Nation-State In The Florida Borderlands, 1765-1837, John Paul A. Nuño

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Florida Borderlands from 1765 to 1837 was a fluid space in which established colonial and Indigenous social, political, and economic systems were in dialogue with emerging discourses associated with the market economy, nationalism, and race. Utilizing British, Spanish, and United States government documents, diplomatic correspondence, and slave claims, this work traces the racialization of diverse Indigenous and African populations. Older colonial powers and nascent nation states sought to create political and social space between individuals within these categories in an effort to better control their labor, movement, and economic status. Consequently, Seminoles and Africans resisted and adapted, depending on …

Afro-Zulians In The Trans-Atlantic World: A Case Study Of Jean De Chourio And The Black Venezuelans Of The Sur Del Lago Maracaibo (1722--1811), Raymond Andrew Keller Ii Jan 2010

Afro-Zulians In The Trans-Atlantic World: A Case Study Of Jean De Chourio And The Black Venezuelans Of The Sur Del Lago Maracaibo (1722--1811), Raymond Andrew Keller Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation addresses the history of a small community of the African Diaspora mostly overlooked: the Afro-Zulians as the descendants of the first blacks brought over to the Sur del Lago Maracaibo region in Venezuela by the Basque-French slave trader Jean de Chourio in 1722. The significance of this group in the context of colonial Venezuela from the period of 1722-1811, the year of Venezuelan independence, is highlighted. This dissertation examines perceptions that the Afro-Zulian community has of itself, as well as the perceptions that others have of it both within and outside of Venezuela. The theoretical idea central to …
