Contrasting View On Asphaltene And Human Cardiac Troponin I: A Surface Chemistry And Spectroscopy Perspective, Jhony Orbulescu

Open Access Dissertations

Surface chemistry has proven in the recent years that it could be used for a variety of applications. In the current work, the surface chemistry and spectroscopic techniques are used to emphasize their great potential in aggregation studies of UG8 asphaltene and the contrasting results for a surface chemistry perspective for the human cardiac troponin I. The first part of the work focuses on the influence of different spreading solvents on the aggregation of UG8 asphaltene and their comparison to the literature on the topic. It is shown that the surface chemistry approach employed in the current work has significant …

Creative Exercises In General Chemistry: A Student-Centered Assessment, Scott E. Lewis, Janet L. Shaw, Kathryn A. Freeman Sep 2010

Creative Exercises In General Chemistry: A Student-Centered Assessment, Scott E. Lewis, Janet L. Shaw, Kathryn A. Freeman

Faculty Articles

Creative exercises (CEs) are a form of assessment in which students are given a prompt and asked to write down as many distinct, correct, and relevant facts about the prompt as they can. Students receive credit for each fact that they include that is related to the prompt and distinct from the other facts they list. With CEs, students have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and the opportunity to select the information that they believe is related to the prompt. In addition, CEs encourage students to connect concepts because any relevant information presented can assist them in completing the …

Accretion is a fundamental process which establishes the dynamics of the protoplanetary disk and the final properties of the forming star. In solar-type stars, the star–disk coupling is determined by the magnetic field structure, which is responsible for funneling material from the disk midplane to higher latitudes on the star. Here, we use pan-chromatic data for the Herbig Ae star MWC 480 to address whether similar processes occur in intermediatemass stars. MWC 480 has X-ray emission typical of actively accreting Herbig Ae stars, but with ∼10× more photoelectric absorption than expected from optical and FUV data. We consider three sources …

Study On Energy Absorption Behaviors Of Hydrophobic Mesoporous Materials, Zhongyuan Sun

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Nanoporous energy absorption system has been developed tremendously as an advanced energy storage system in recent years. This research is to optimize the mesoporous energy absorption matrixes via surface treatment to find out the optimum conditions for higher energy conversion efficiency. Five mesoporous silica matrixes with pore size in a range of 3 to 31.6 nm were investigated. Six alkylchlorosilanes were used as the modification reagents. The results showed that the energy absorption density via pressure-induced infiltration is as high as 8.0 J/g which is 100 times larger than that of conventional energy absorption materials. The controllability of the energy …

Organic Chemistry Preconceptions And Their Correlation To Student Success, Jodie T. Wasacz May 2010

Organic Chemistry Preconceptions And Their Correlation To Student Success, Jodie T. Wasacz

Dissertations

When general chemistry students register for organic chemistry, they often have a negative connotation associated with the topic. It has been observed that students talk as if they are experts in what organic chemistry is and exactly how hard it is when many of them have had very little background on the subject. Some students do not even know what topics organic chemistry encompasses. By establishing a framework of where their preconceptions come from and what they are, instructors, will have a better understanding of how to address preconceptions when beginning an organic chemistry course, or perhaps even before. Furthermore, …

Design, Synthesis And Characterization Of Oriented Glyco-Affinity Macroligands For Glyco-Capturing, Glycomics And Glycoproteomics Applications, Srinivas Chalagalla

ETD Archive

Cell surface carbohydrates existing as parts of glycoproteins, glycolipids, and other conjugates present the first information about cell to the outside world and are intimately involved in various biological events such as intercellular communication, and molecular and cellular targeting. However, mechanisms of most processes at the molecular level are still unclear. Therefore, it is very important to develop carbohydrate-specific binding molecules for rapid, efficient, sensitive purification and accurate analysis of complex carbohydrate structures as well as their functions. Furthermore, carbohydrate-specific binding molecules can be expected to be used in medical diagnostic applications for carbohydrate biomarkers. In this thesis study, oriented …

Towards The Synthesis Of 1,4-Dibenzyl-1,4,7-Triazacyclononane-7-Monoacetate For A Potential Mimic Of Oxalate Degrading Enzymes, Alexandria Liang Jan 2010

Towards The Synthesis Of 1,4-Dibenzyl-1,4,7-Triazacyclononane-7-Monoacetate For A Potential Mimic Of Oxalate Degrading Enzymes, Alexandria Liang

Theses & ETDs

Oxalate oxidase and oxalate decarboxylase are enzymes responsible for the degradation of oxalate. These enzymes are present in plants, bacteria and fungi. Consumption of oxalate, by both people and livestock, can result in cardiological and kidney disease. This is because neither contains oxalate degrading enzymes. Small molecule mimics of oxalate oxidase and oxalate decarboxylase have the potential to function as a tool for understanding the activity of the enzymes, testing for oxalate toxicity, probing the relationship between structure and function, and much more. An oxalate oxidase or oxalate decarboxylase mimic requires the synthesis of a ligand for complexation with a …

Complexation Of Pb(Ii) By Chloride Ions In Aqueous Solutions, Robert H. Byrne, Wensheng Yao, Yanxin Luo, Frank J. Millero

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Lead chloride formation constants at 25°C were derived from analysis of previous spectrophotometrically generated observations of lead speciation in a variety of aqueous solutions (HClO4–HCl and NaCl–NaClO4 mixtures, and solutions of MgCl2 and CaCl2). Specific interaction theory analysis of these formation constants produced coherent estimates of (a) PbCl+, PbCl20, and PbCl −3 formation constants at zero ionic strength, and (b) well-defined depictions of the dependence of these formation constants on ionic strength. Accompanying examination of a recent IUPAC critical assessment of lead formation constants, in conjunction with the …

Using an Integrated Assessment (IA) framework, we consolidated and utilized existing data from the Detroit River to develop models that both identify possible drivers of elevated fish contaminant body burdens, and to facilitate a more risk-based approach of tissue trigger-levels for consumption advisories. This integrated assessment approach was particularly useful for consumption advisories as it provided the ability to integrate and organize complex data in a manner that can help inform management decisions. In addition, the IA framework explicitly fosters collaboration and participation of multiple interested groups. We have capitalized on this component of IAs, by seeking the active participation …
