Modern Migration In Two Arabic Novels, Ikram Masmoudi
Modern Migration In Two Arabic Novels, Ikram Masmoudi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Modern Migration in Two Arabic Novels" Ikram Masmoudi proposes that twentieth-century Arab fiction is marked by the theme of the journey in literal and figurative ways. This motif features the theme of departure and arrival through characters crossings borders from East to West and from the periphery to the center (i.e., the metropolis) in order to acquire knowledge, understanding, and empowerment and to get a sense of Western modernity. The departure and arrival of the main characters becomes the central aesthetic preoccupying with a focus on their arrival back home and their rediscovery of their own idea …

The Impact Of Authoritarian Systems On The Rise Of Transnational Islamist Movements: Egypt, Saudi Arabia & The Path To Al Qaeda, Rehab El-Bakry
Theses and Dissertations
The events of September 11, 2001 have had a profound impact on the world we live in today. Not only have they changed the perception of rights and freedoms in both the developed and developing worlds, but these events brought violent political Islamist movements from the fringes of international politics to the forefront of world politics. Suddenly movements that were once seen as an issue for the Muslim world became a concern for countries worldwide as they struggled to understand the causes behind the rise of Islamist violence and figure out ways to address it. By and large, Islamist movements, …
The Evolution Of Birkat Al-Fil (From The Fatimids To The Twentieth Century), Nadia Fouad Younes
The Evolution Of Birkat Al-Fil (From The Fatimids To The Twentieth Century), Nadia Fouad Younes
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will be exploring in depth the urban fabric of the area formerly known as Birkat al-Fil, or Elephant Pond, and its modern day transformation into areas such as Hilmiyya and Hilmiyya al-Jadida. Though the pond was eventually filled in the middle of the nineteenth century, the area will still be discussed in terms of its development within the modern era. I have defined the pre-twentieth century area of Birkat al-Fil by historical landmarks such as Bab al-Khalq to the north, the Mosque of Sultan Hasan to the east, and Sayyida Zaynab to the west. The pond area that …

Writing As Resistance: Assia Djebar’S Vaste Est La Prison, Joyce Lazarus
Writing As Resistance: Assia Djebar’S Vaste Est La Prison, Joyce Lazarus
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay examines contemporary Algerian women’s condition, as it is articulated in Djebar’s autobiographical novel, Vaste est la prison (1995). After giving an overview of modern Algerian history, I offer a reading of Djebar’s novel that takes account of its potential to produce social change. This essay demonstrates that Djebar blurs the boundaries between autobiography, fiction and history in order to fully utilize the subversive potential of writing. Using the perspective of new historicism, I show how Djebar responds to her country’s unilateralism in language and its exclusion of women by her unique rhetorical strategies, in order to restore women’s …

The Margin And The Center: A Study In Selected Works From Contemporary Egyptian Novels, Linda Istanbulli
The Margin And The Center: A Study In Selected Works From Contemporary Egyptian Novels, Linda Istanbulli
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study of the margins and the centers of Cairo as viewed through the lens of modern and contemporary Egyptian novels. I trace how these and other Egyptian writers map the main forces that shape centers of power, how centers of power see and use the marginalized, how the marginalized themselves picture these centers. The marginalized, by conceptual necessity, are defined by two cultures and two societies at the same time; the margin and the center. I explore how Egyptian writers locate and represent these two forces, and how this duality creates relationships that keep these two …

Persecution Of Coptic Christians In Modern Egypt, Alla Rubinstein
Persecution Of Coptic Christians In Modern Egypt, Alla Rubinstein
Human Rights & Human Welfare
The Christian community of Egypt dates back to the seventeenth century and comprises 12 per cent of the population today. As one of the oldest churches of the world, the Coptic Christian Church, first formed in Alexandria, has stood resilient and faithful to its traditions against intolerance, siege and persecutions. Having been present in most institutions of the state among the overwhelmingly Sunni-Muslim population, Copts are not new to the slow process of Islamization that Egypt has been undergoing for the last twenty years. What has been unique to the recent Coptic experience is the forced integration of Shari’a law …
