Taking The Sustainable Agriculture Challenge: Recontextualizing Rural Sociology, Betty L. Wells
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Agroecosystems Analysis (SusAg 509), a required course for all majors in Iowa State University’s Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture, provides an immersion experience in the situated challenges of sustainable agriculture. The field portion of SusAg 509, which takes place every year during the first two weeks of August, brings students face-to-face with different understandings of sustainability and the diverse complexity of Midwestern agriculture. Dialogue and reflection turn the raw stuff of experience into learning, as students discover the power and validity of multiple perspectives. More than two dozen site visits help make abstract concepts, such as the economy and social …

Paradoxical Perceptions Of Problems Associated With Unconventional Natural Gas Development, Gene L. Theodori
Paradoxical Perceptions Of Problems Associated With Unconventional Natural Gas Development, Gene L. Theodori
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Data collected in a general population survey from a random sample of individuals in two counties located in the Barnett Shale region of Texas were used to empirically explore potentially problematic issues associated with unconventional natural gas development. Moderate support was found for the hypothesis that individuals residing in places with diverse levels of energy development exhibit dissimilar perceptions of potentially problematic issues. The results indicate residents of the county where the natural gas industry was more mature (Wise County) were significantly more likely than residents of the county where the natural gas industry was less established (Johnson County) to …

Investigating Solutions To Wind Washing Issues In 2-Story Florida Homes; Phase 1, Florida Solar Energy Center, Charles Withers, Jr.
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Wind washing has been identified as a potentially significant issue regarding energy, demand, comfort, and humidity in some two-story Florida homes. In its most common configuration, wind washing occurs when attic spaces over first-floor portions of the home abut the second story, and the floor cavity of the second story is open to that attic space. Wind blowing into attic vents can push hot attic air into the inter-story floor cavity, bypassing the typical thermal boundaries of the building and introducing considerable heat into the house. Wind washing can also occur when there is little or no attic involved, where …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Is the analysis of patron–client networks still important to the understanding of developing country politics or has it now been overtaken by a focus on ‘social capital’? Drawing on seventeen country studies of the political environment for livestock policy in poor countries, this article concludes that although the nature of patronage has changed significantly, it remains highly relevant to the ways peasant interests are treated. Peasant populations were found either to have no clear connection to their political leaders or to be controlled by political clientage. Furthermore, communities ‘free’ of patron–client ties to the centre generally are not better represented …
Active Ageing On The Company Level: The Theory Vs. The Day-To-Day Practice In Slovenia, Jana Žnidaršič, Vlado Dimovski
Active Ageing On The Company Level: The Theory Vs. The Day-To-Day Practice In Slovenia, Jana Žnidaršič, Vlado Dimovski
Economic and Business Review
The need to improve the labour market participation of older people has received ever greater attention in recent years, especially in view of the significant demographic changes the European Union will undergo due to population ageing. Besides the macroeconomic level, implications of this trend are strongly seen at the company level, particularly when it comes to managing the ageing workforce. Companies are thus introducing new approaches, policies and instruments which seek to foster the higher employment rates of the elderly by implementing the active-ageing concept in business and HRM practice. The paper aims to highlight the development of active-ageing initiatives …

Inflation, Quantum Fields, And Cmb Anisotropies, Iván Agulló, José Navarro-Salas, Gonzalo J. Olmo, Leonard Parker

Inflationary cosmology has proven to be the most successful at predicting the properties of the anisotropies observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this essay we show that quantum field renormalization significantly influences the generation of primordial perturbations and hence the expected measurable imprint of cosmological inflation on the CMB. However, the new predictions remain in agreement with observation, and in fact favor the simplest forms of inflation. In the near future, observations of the influence of gravitational waves from the early universe on the CMB will test our new predictions. © 2009 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Background: Previously we have shown that B cell receptor (BCR) expression and B cell receptor signaling pathways are important for the basal growth of B lymphoma cells. In particular we have shown that the activation of Syk, a non-src family protein tyrosine kinase and the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK), ERK and JNK that mediate BCR signals are required for the constitutive growth of B lymphoma cells. Since src family protein tyrosine kinases (SFKs) like Lyn are known to be needed for the phosphorylation of BCR co-receptors, Ig-alpha and Ig-beta, we hypothesized that one or more SFKs will be constitutively …

Ship Recycling In The International Regulatory Regime Of The Marine Environment : Selected Legal And Practical Issues And Implications, Ying Fang
World Maritime University Dissertations
Ship recycling is considered to be a safe and green solution to the disposal of ships reaching the end of their operational lives. It has become an issue of grave concern mainly due to the deteriorating records of work safety and environmental pollution associated with this activity. Therefore, international regulatory measures are needed to effectively control ship recycling activities taking into account the important factors of environmental protection and socio-economic development. The discussion in this dissertation revolves around the co-existence and effectiveness of two regulatory conventions relating to ship recycling, namely, the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements …
