Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu Dec 2009

Assessment Of Individual Activities Of Daily Living And Its Association With Self-Rated Health Status In Elderly People, Yu-Ning Hu, Chin-Ching Li, Chia Lee, Rung-Huei Lin, Gwo-Chi Hu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Health-related quality-of-life in the elderly generally encompasses freedom from disease, good physical and psycho-social well-being, and preventing the loss of function in activities of daily living (ADL). Some indices of ADL, such as basic ADL and instrumental ADL, are considered to be measures of functional status in the elderly. However, in most studies, functional status is evaluated by either the summed ADL score or disability score in one or more ADLs. No studies have investigated the association between an individual's ADL function and self-rated health status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of functional status (i.e., …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Although health promotion issues specific to people with physical disabilities have received much attention in the last ten years, related clinical trials studying the efficacy and viability of these programs are lacking. In this pilot study, we implemented a short-term health promotion intervention for overweight/obese post-polio survivors. The study design included a three-month intervention containing exercise, diet education and health behavior modification, a before-and-after comparison, and a 12-month follow-up.Thirty one subjects were enrolled. They were divided into three groups by their mobility ability. Group 1 was comprised of those who could walk independently without an orthosis; group 2 subjects walked …

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) is used for assessing nicotine dependence. A shorter test derived from the FTND used for the general population is the Heavy Smoking Index (HSI) (six questions vs. two). The objective of this study is to compare the validity of the HSI versus the FTND.

METHODS: A survey of tobacco use in the general population was carried out in the northern Spanish region of Galicia using both the FTND and the HSI to study a representative sample of 1655 daily smokers. The HSI was compared with the FTND, considered the gold standard. Measures …

Proteolytic Regulation Of Toxin-Antitoxin Systems By Clppc In Staphylococcus Aureus, Niles P. Donegan, Earl T. Thompson, Zhibiao Fu, Ambrose L. Cheung Dec 2009

Proteolytic Regulation Of Toxin-Antitoxin Systems By Clppc In Staphylococcus Aureus, Niles P. Donegan, Earl T. Thompson, Zhibiao Fu, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Bacterial toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems typically consist of a small, labile antitoxin that inactivates a specific longer-lived toxin. In Escherichia coli, such antitoxins are proteolytically regulated by the ATP-dependent proteases Lon and ClpP. Under normal conditions, antitoxin synthesis is sufficient to replace this loss from proteolysis, and the bacterium remains protected from the toxin. However, if TA production is interrupted, antitoxin levels decrease, and the cognate toxin is free to inhibit the specific cellular component, such as mRNA, DnaB, or gyrase. To date, antitoxin degradation has been studied only in E. coli, so it remains unclear whether similar mechanisms of regulation …

Chylomicrons Promote Intestinal Absorption And Systemic Dissemination Of Dietary Antigen (Ovalbumin) In Mice, Yuehui Wang, Sarbani Ghoshal, Martin Ward, Willem De Villiers, Jerold Woodward, Erik Eckhardt Dec 2009

Chylomicrons Promote Intestinal Absorption And Systemic Dissemination Of Dietary Antigen (Ovalbumin) In Mice, Yuehui Wang, Sarbani Ghoshal, Martin Ward, Willem De Villiers, Jerold Woodward, Erik Eckhardt

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: A small fraction of dietary protein survives enzymatic degradation and is absorbed in potentially antigenic form. This can trigger inflammatory responses in patients with celiac disease or food allergies, but typically induces systemic immunological tolerance (oral tolerance). At present it is not clear how dietary antigens are absorbed. Most food staples, including those with common antigens such as peanuts, eggs, and milk, contain long-chain triglycerides (LCT), which stimulate mesenteric lymph flux and postprandial transport of chylomicrons through mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) and blood. Most dietary antigens, like ovalbumin (OVA), are emulsifiers, predicting affinity for chylomicrons. We hypothesized that chylomicron …

Health-Enhancing Activities And The Environment: How Competition For Resources Makes The Environmental Policy Beneficial, Xavier Pautrel Dec 2009

Health-Enhancing Activities And The Environment: How Competition For Resources Makes The Environmental Policy Beneficial, Xavier Pautrel

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a two-period overlapping generations model, this paper demonstrates that the relationship between the environmental taxation and the economic activity (level- and growth-output) becomes inverted-U shaped, when the detrimental impact of pollution on health and the private decision of each working-age agent to improve her health are taken into account. Especially, a tighter environmental tax is more likely to promote (rather than to harm) output-level and –growth when health is very sensitive to pollution, the weight of health in preferences is high, the polluting capacity of the production technology is high and the rate of natural purification of pollutants is …

The Objectives And Principles Of The Trips Agreement, Peter K. Yu Dec 2009

The Objectives And Principles Of The Trips Agreement, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, which established the minimum standards for the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights for WTO members, remains one of the more controversial international intellectual property agreements that have entered into force. Although that Agreement embraces a highly problematic super-size-fits-all approach, it includes a number of safeguards and flexibilities to facilitate economic development and to protect the public interest. Articles 7 and 8, in particular, lay out explicit and important objectives and principles that can play important roles in the interpretation and implementation of the Agreement.

Effects Of A Putative Reb1 Protein Binding Site On Ime4 Sense And Antisense Transcription And Sporulation In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Milele Ramsay

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Genome transcription is much more widespread than has been traditionally thought because our view of a "gene" or "transcription unit" has changed dramatically over the past 4 to 5 years with the identification of many different non-coding ribonucleic acids. In the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, meiosis and sporulation are an important part of the life cycle and IME4 gene expression is required for these processes. IME4 sense transcript levels of expression are influenced by the level of its complementary non-coding antisense strand by mechanisms that are currently unknown. The a1-alpha2 heterodimer binding in the downstream 3' region of IME4 is one …
