Enlightenment And Ecumenism, Ulrich Lehner Oct 2009

Enlightenment And Ecumenism, Ulrich Lehner

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The contribution of monasticism to Christian theology's framework in almost all periods is undisputed. However, the eighteenth century as a period of monastic theology is still—unjustly—overlooked. That was precisely the time when monks, mostly Benedictines, challenged the traditional ways of theologizing and, along with a number of dedicated individuals, initiated what came to be called the Catholic Enlightenment.1 This movement worked not only for a renewal of ecclesiastical practice and thought, but also for a peaceful dialogue between the Christian churches and even toward an ecumenical theology. One of the most intriguing figures of this enlightened theology is the Swabian …

Ethics With Character: Virtues And The Ethical Social Worker, Paul Adams Sep 2009

Ethics With Character: Virtues And The Ethical Social Worker, Paul Adams

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article explores the relevance to social work of those aspects of applied ethics that are not primarily about identifying and resolving dilemmas. It examines the potential of the ethical tradition rooted in the virtues and character of the practitioner-from Aristotle and Hippocrates to contemporary virtue-based ethics in medicine-to guide and enrich our understanding of the social work profession and the dispositions or qualities of character its practice requires and develops.

Applying Catholic Social Teachings To Ethical Issues In Marketing, Thomas A. Klein, Gene R. Laczniak Sep 2009

Applying Catholic Social Teachings To Ethical Issues In Marketing, Thomas A. Klein, Gene R. Laczniak

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This article updates earlier work by the authors and proposes the social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church to be an encompassing and coherent normative theory, a source of principles that address contemporary issues in marketing, especially when a manager faces ethically charged questions. The authors propose that this application of a tradition in moral theology offers a novel approach for helping resolve contemporary ethical problems in marketing. Their approach to this task pursues two paths. First, the main tenets of Catholic social teaching are presented, along with some discussion of sources. Then, some of the ethical issues associated with …

Hiv And Condoms Within Marriage, Most Rev Anthony Fisher Jul 2009

Hiv And Condoms Within Marriage, Most Rev Anthony Fisher

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

In this essay I revisit the issue of whether an agency or a professional, including doctors, nurses, pastors, counselors and educators, may assist the condomizing of intercourse – as I will call it for short – in order to reduce HIV transmission within marriage. There are parallel but also distinct arguments to be made outside of marriage, e.g. in homosexual intercourse. There are also many ways to ‘assist’. Most Catholic agencies will not actually distribute condoms. But may they take part in an ‘ABC’ program which promotes ‘A’ for Abstinence, ‘B’ for Be Faithful to one’s spouse (what I call …

Reclaiming Our Identities: From Ethicist To Moral Theologian, M Therese Lysaught

Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The CHA Ethics Survey issues a challenge to those who "do" ethics within Catholic health care: is it time to reclaim the identity of the Catholic moral theologian for Catholic health care? If the answer is "yes," what will it take to do so?

Attaining Moral Knowledge In The Church And Models Of Adult Learning, Richard Shields Mar 2009

Attaining Moral Knowledge In The Church And Models Of Adult Learning, Richard Shields

Journal of Catholic Education

For the Holy See this signifies a loss of a sense of sin and reconciliation, rightly connecting moral consciousness and faith in salvation with sacramental celebration. Cultural studies underscore the importance of ritual practices as an essential element of religion’s ability to deal with the experience of moral evil. However, decline in the frequency of confession may also be complicated by indifference among North American Catholics to current roles and power relations in the Church. In light of moral individualism in society and new ways of envisioning the Church fostered by Vatican II, the challenge of moral education in the …

Portraits Of Resiliency : A Qualitative Study Of Appalachian Christian Women, Joy A. Butcher-Winfree

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate how some women in Appalachia create meaning and purpose when faced with challenges, problems, and crises and how they make it through these difficult events. The following research questions informed this research: 1) What role does spirituality play in the process of resiliency; 2) How does a relationship with a higher power enhance a woman’s ability to bounce back from difficult situations; and 3) How do some Appalachian Christian women find meaning and purpose when faced with challenges, problems and crisis and how do they make it through? The study involved collection, …

Counsel And Conscience: Post-Reformation Lutheran Casuistry According To The Dedekenn-Gerhard Thesaurus Consiliorum Et Decisionum And Its Cases On Marriage And Divorce., Benjamin T. G. Mayes Jan 2009

Counsel And Conscience: Post-Reformation Lutheran Casuistry According To The Dedekenn-Gerhard Thesaurus Consiliorum Et Decisionum And Its Cases On Marriage And Divorce., Benjamin T. G. Mayes

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

In much literature on early modern casuistry and conscience, Lutheran casuistry is denied a place, under-researched, or ignored. Yet in Lutheran Germany of the post-Reformation era (ca. 1580–1750), there was a genre of pastoral/ethical writings consisting in casuistry and in topically or thematically related theological counsels, aimed at instructing and comforting the consciences of Christians. An extensive example from this genre is Georg Dedekenn and Johann Ernst Gerhard, eds., Thesaurus Consiliorum Et Decisionum, 4 vols. (Jena: Zacharias Hertel, 1671). Lutheran casuistry, related to but also distinct from Roman Catholic and Reformed counterparts, arose especially as pastors looked within Holy Scripture, …

Creation Care: The Construction Of An Evangelical Environmentalism, Chris Toner Jan 2009

Creation Care: The Construction Of An Evangelical Environmentalism, Chris Toner

Theses & ETDs

As climate change becomes a serious political issue in recent decades, dialogue concerning how to address the problem has intensified. The evangelical community has made a surprising entrance into this discussion. Evangelicals have traditionally fought for conservative social causes, and environmentalism has been stereotyped as liberal and secular. The manifestation of an evangelical voice in the discourse has heavy implications for the future of environmentalism and governmental approaches to the issue. However, there has been considerable debate over how “dominion belief,” anthropocentrism, and theological and political conservatism affect environmental attitudes. In the context of this debate, then, what obstacles had …

He Speaks Not, Yet He Says Everything; What Of That?: Text, Context, And Pretext In State V. Jeffrey Dahmer, Gregory J. O'Meara S.J. Jan 2009

He Speaks Not, Yet He Says Everything; What Of That?: Text, Context, And Pretext In State V. Jeffrey Dahmer, Gregory J. O'Meara S.J.

Faculty Publications

In State v. Dahmer, the defense attempted to lead the jury through a series of inferences to conclude that the defendant was insane at the time he committed each of the fifteen murders charged; it portrayed a client who was fully cooperative and honest once the authorities arrested him. To make this approach work, the defense needed narrative distance between the defendant and the jury so he could not be cross examined about his meticulous planning of each murder or his prior inconsistent statements. This paper briefly lays out the development of the defense of insanity, focusing on the different …
