The Perspectives Of First-Year Principals Regarding Their Experiences With Mentors And The Mentoring Process Within The Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction (Leli) Program, Sabrah Helms Kingham Dec 2009

The Perspectives Of First-Year Principals Regarding Their Experiences With Mentors And The Mentoring Process Within The Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction (Leli) Program, Sabrah Helms Kingham

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Are new school administrators prepared for the surprises, obstacles, and opportunities they are likely to encounter during the first-year in their new role? Sadly enough, too many new leaders do not feel prepared to meet the challenges of their new role as an administrator. In 2006, the National Center for Education Statistics (2006) reported that there were 95,726 administrators in the U. S. Within this pool of administrators, approximately 127 were new hires in the state of Louisiana (LDE, 2006). In an effort to find ways to support, guide, and retain new principals, the Louisiana Educational Leaders Network, under the …

Educational Policy Studies Dissertations

ABSTRACT LUCY DIGGS SLOWE, HOWARD UNIVERSITY DEAN OF WOMEN, 1922-1937: EDUCATOR, ADMINISTRATOR, ACTIVIST by Lisa R. Rasheed Within the last twenty years, some educational researchers initiated an emphasis to study the accomplishments and contributions of African-American women in higher education. Although they were marginally recognized, some African-American women forged into uncharted territories by providing examples of administrative leadership in post-secondary settings. Their triumphs and failures have gone unnoticed, leaving a vacant space in the chronicles of history in higher education. Little is know about one African-American woman, as an administrator at a co-educational institution in terms of her vision about …

Voice And Volume Of Leader Self-Awareness, Michael J. Mcdonald Dec 2009

Voice And Volume Of Leader Self-Awareness, Michael J. Mcdonald

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study proposed that the level of self-awareness possessed by a leader has a direct relationship with the engagement level of the team he or she leads. A quantitative approach using the results of self-other leadership ratings and team engagement ratings were examined to explain employee engagement through perceptions of leadership awareness.

By understanding leadership through the integration of two instruments, one designed to measure seven specific demands of leadership (the L7 instrument) and another to measure employee engagement on twelve dimensions (the Q12 instrument), this study explored the relationship between leader self-awareness and the effect of that awareness on …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Organizational Restructuring On Identification Within Extension, Cynthia B. Torppa, Keith L. Smith Dec 2009

An Examination Of The Impact Of Organizational Restructuring On Identification Within Extension, Cynthia B. Torppa, Keith L. Smith

The Journal of Extension

Many Extension organizations enjoy strong Organizational Identification (OI) among personnel. But organizational change may negatively influence identification, and many Extension organizations have been changing the way they serve their publics. To examine the impact of change on OI, we compared Extension personnel's OI scores following a major restructuring to OI scores gathered during a period of relative stability reported in previous research from another Extension organization. Findings indicated that OI scores were slightly lower following restructuring; however, the pattern of scores across four targets (Extension, program area, counties, and centers) remained constant, suggesting personnel will rarely identify with mid-level targets.

Community Voices—A Leadership Program Making A Difference In Rural Underserved Counties In North Carolina, Jane T. Walker, Benjamin Gray Dec 2009

Community Voices—A Leadership Program Making A Difference In Rural Underserved Counties In North Carolina, Jane T. Walker, Benjamin Gray

The Journal of Extension

Leadership is critically important to rural communities. The study reported here compared the leadership practices of leaders who are graduates of Community Voices Leadership Development for Community Decision Making (CV), a leadership program, to leaders who did not participate in the program. A telephone survey, which included questions from a modified version of the Leadership Practices Inventory (Kouzes & Posner, 1993), was used to collect the data. The study provides evidence that the CV program implemented in rural underserved counties in North Carolina is making a difference in the practices of rural leaders who have undergone the training.

Teacher Leadership Practices In Large Texas High Schools With Different Accountability Ratings: A Mixed Methods Study, Cynthia Molina Saldivar Dec 2009

Teacher Leadership Practices In Large Texas High Schools With Different Accountability Ratings: A Mixed Methods Study, Cynthia Molina Saldivar

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A promising strategy for improving education is to use the energy of teacher leaders as agents of school change. According to Katzenmeyer and Moller (2001), teaching and learning improve where shared leadership exists, and when there is no expectation of “heroic leadership” from one person. Therefore, this mixed methods study was designed to examine teacher leadership and the leadership styles and practices of principals in large Texas high schools with different accountability ratings. Two hundred and fifteen participants consisting of teachers, teacher leaders, and leadership team members from 24 high schools were surveyed; and personal interviews were held with principals …

Roles, Responsibilities, Celebrations, And Post-Presidency Aspirations Of Female College Presidents, Almeda Jacks

All Dissertations

Of the 3,300 university and college presidents in higher education in the United States, only 23% are held by females (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 2007). The percentage of female students in most institutions in higher education is higher than those of male students.
The Central questions that guided this research study are as follows: What are the roles and responsibilities of presidents of higher educational institutions? How do presidents of higher education celebrate their professional and personal accomplishments? Additionally, what are the post-presidency aspirations of the eight women interviewed who all currently are in their first presidency position in …

A Historical Analysis Of The Leadership And Strategic Plan Of Chancellor Stephen R. Portch In The University System Of Georgia, Jennifer El Fairchild-Pierce

Educational Policy Studies Dissertations

This dissertation provides historical insight into the design and implementation of one strategic plan of a public higher education system in an effort to inform future similar strategic planning processes. On July 1, 1994, the Board of Regents appointed Stephen R. Portch the ninth Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. The timing was advantageous because then Governor Zell Miller was determined to leave his legacy as Georgia’s “education governor,” and in those prosperous economic times, the Governor was eager to pour money into the university system. The regents selected Portch because they recognized his potential to lead the system …

Coaching Educational Leaders, Jothany Blackwood Oct 2009

Coaching Educational Leaders, Jothany Blackwood

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

As institutions of higher learning respond to the rapidly changing demographics of its administrators, they must continuously find processes that improve the performance and effectiveness of these individuals. They must also begin to understand how the integration of coaching and/or mentoring shapes educational leaders and their institutions. From developing administrator’s potential to work well with others and strengthen communication, coaching also access to mobility, career advancements, promotions and pay increases. Of interest is the presence of female administrators in the California community colleges and the role that coaching plays in their ability to be effective educational leaders.

Framing Academic Leadership Positioning For The Global University, Kamaruzaman Jusoff Oct 2009

Framing Academic Leadership Positioning For The Global University, Kamaruzaman Jusoff

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

“Putting the right person at the right place at the right time” may be an old adage. However, for an organization to sustain on, the statement may remain significant and relevant. When deciding the leadership to play its role and to execute its function effectively and efficiently, this maxim remains a tag line to help make the organization, particularly educational institutions, to move towards the right track. Hence, the notion of leadership and its positioning in higher education arena refers not only to the strategic moves and tracks in meeting the unceasing demand for and a great diversification in this …

Leadership As Imagery: Creating Your Picture Of The Future, Kerri Mckenna Oct 2009

Leadership As Imagery: Creating Your Picture Of The Future, Kerri Mckenna

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

After several years of bi weekly faculty meetings, I had had my fill of “School Leaders” dictating and telling us what needed to be done in order to meet state standards, raise test scores and improve student attendance. Each week we had a “new idea” tossed at us from above with the same fervor and enthusiasm that I shared with my students about writing. And, each week, my over loaded brain walked out of the faculty meeting criticizing the fact that I was being told what to do, but not why it was important that I did it. The constant …

Leading Faculty: Understanding The Connection Between Goals And Values, Frank Grosso Oct 2009

Leading Faculty: Understanding The Connection Between Goals And Values, Frank Grosso

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Faculty can never do enough. We need them to teach, write, advise, mentor, network, and conduct groundbreaking research. And when we are faced with extremely limited budgets, hiring freezes, and increased pressure to bring in research funds, university faculty are counted on to pick up the fallen pieces. Academic leaders find themselves asking faculty to give more time and effort to assist in advancing their institutions, but at what price? Typically, as leaders demand more of the faculty, morale tends to decrease and grumbling skyrockets. In actuality, it is like that in any organization. However, it is no secret that …

Tomorrow’S Teacher Leaders: Nurturing A Disposition Of Leadership, Jana Hunzicker, Twila Lukowiak, Victoria Huffman, Celia Johnson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

Until recently, the terms teacher and leadership were not often mentioned in the same sentence. Educational leadership was synonymous with school administration, and teachers viewed themselves as followers rather than leaders. Over the past fifteen years, this perception has changed. Due to federal mandates such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Response to Intervention (RtI), teacher roles and responsibilities have expanded (Le Cornu, 1999) and distributed school leadership has become the norm (Danielson, 2006; Harrison & Killion, 2007).

Potential Extensions To Transformational Leadership Models, C.R.A. Jackson Oct 2009

Potential Extensions To Transformational Leadership Models, C.R.A. Jackson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The view adopted in this research was that transformational leadership (Bass 1985; Burns 1978) could be characterised by an ability to bring about significant change in an organization, and that transactional leadership above was inadequate for this task. Since the 1980s, research (Avolio & Bass 2002; Bass 1990; Parry 1996) supported the idea that transformational leadership was more effective than transactional leadership in generating the extra effort, commitment and satisfaction of those being led (Bass 1990). Transformational leadership was a process where leaders and followers raised one another to higher moral and motivational levels (Yukl 1971). As Bass (1990) asserted, …

Rotating-Term Associate Deans: Pathway To Higher Education Administration, Eugenia Gerdes, Christopher Zappe

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

In a recent article in this journal, Betts, Urias, Chavez, and Betts (2009) argue that higher education faces a leadership shortage—due both to expected turnover in senior administrative positions and to lack of clear pathways into administration. As we have discussed elsewhere (Zappe & Gerdes, 2008), administration is not typically a long-term goal for those whose careers begin with faculty appointments. For the few who switch pathways to become academic administrators, an associate dean position often is the point of transition. Below, we describe the advantages of rotating associate dean positions, in which faculty members from the same institution leave …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate two important aspects of educational technology: leadership and implementation. The research conducted in this study aimed to assess three aspects of leadership as it relates to educational technology: leadership that supports the technology implementation process, leadership that supports the change associated implementing technology, and leadership that supports a culture that embraces technology. An additional purpose of this study was to evaluate the process, procedures, and actions of implementing educational technology at three Catholic elementary schools in ways that foster a culture that promotes a supportive disposition towards educational technology.

Program Integrity: A Powerful Organizing Construct Or Just More Jargon?, Michael W. Duttweiler, Sarah F. Dayton

The Journal of Extension

This article describes the conception and application of program integrity as a framework for communicating and reinforcing the importance of intentional program development and as an integrating theme for program development curricula. We suggest it provides a motivational factor often missing from curricula. The working definition of program integrity was developed drawing elements from instructional design, ethics, and public accountability.

The establishment of polytechnics in Malaysia was to fulfill the needs of providing education and practical knowledge to help the nation producing semi-professional workers in various disciplines such as engineering, commerce and hospitality. Leadership is an important component that contributes towards the success of any education institution. Better and advance leadership practices are needed in order to improve the status and standard of environment on campus (Zaharah, 2004). According to Cunningham and Cordeiro (2000), effective leaders must be able to understand all elements of educational administration in the process of building the education excellence and translating it into teaching and …
