Urban Catholic High Schools And Disadvantaged Females, Corinne R. Merrit Dec 2008

Urban Catholic High Schools And Disadvantaged Females, Corinne R. Merrit

Journal of Catholic Education

The purpose of this study was to discover the life experiences of disadvantaged female graduates of urban Catholic high schools and what they say about the capacity of Catholic education to meet their academic, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Based on narrative inquiry, this study was conducted using a series of in-depth, semistructured interviews to elicit the life experiences of 5 participants. Twelve common personal characteristics emerged directly from the narratives of the participants and provided the backdrop for two patterns: (a) the importance of education, and (b) the importance of relationships. This study found the high school experiences met …

Paul’S Contextualization Of The Gospel Before The Areopagus In Acts 17, Philip J. Luca Nov 2008

Paul’S Contextualization Of The Gospel Before The Areopagus In Acts 17, Philip J. Luca

Senior Honors Theses

The following thesis is an analysis on Paul’s presentation of the gospel to the Areopagus as recorded in Acts 17:22-31. The reasons behind his drastic permutation of the kerygma will be scrutinized by studying the exposition of the main components of the speech in parallel with an analysis of his audience. The objective of the thesis is to investigate the Apostle’s consistency with the orthodox kerygma as well as his interaction with the Gentile listeners. In conclusion, consequences for a relevant gospel presentation today will be proposed in light of Paul’s homily to the Areopagite Council.

Stealing Sacraments: What Protestant Educators Can Learn From Other Religious Traditions, Mark A. Lamport Nov 2008

Stealing Sacraments: What Protestant Educators Can Learn From Other Religious Traditions, Mark A. Lamport

Christian Perspectives in Education

This somewhat provocative article is not a treatise on theological doctrine and interfaith dialogue, but addresses how adherents of various faith traditions practice their faith in ways that can enhance their witness in the world and from which Protestants should learn. The author calls these faith-building religious practices sacraments. He proposes that Protestant educators – whether in faith-based or in public schools which teach religion classes in their curriculum – would be wise to adapt the most effective means of nurturing faith in subscribers to other religious traditions; these means should be incorporated as a supplement to those practices most-commonly …

A Project To Foster Spiritual Formation In Online Classrooms, Robert Vaughan Oct 2008

A Project To Foster Spiritual Formation In Online Classrooms, Robert Vaughan

Doctor of Ministry

Online programs are a growing phenomenon in adult education. Many Christian colleges and universities use this method to meet the educational needs of non-traditional students. A drawback of online education is the challenge to address the spiritual needs of students in a virtual environment. This project will propose an approach for fostering spiritual formation in asynchronous, adult online educational programs.

Section 2 will demonstrate the problem of fostering spiritual formation in online environments including the following issues: the demographics of the project, an organizational analysis of the project, and historical timelines of online adult education.

Section 3 will explore how …

Vincent De Paul And Jean-Jacques Olier: Unlikely Friends, Robert P. Maloney C.M. Oct 2008

Vincent De Paul And Jean-Jacques Olier: Unlikely Friends, Robert P. Maloney C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Robert Maloney traces the friendship of Vincent de Paul and Jean-Jacques Olier and summarizes some essential similarities and differences between them. Vincent was briefly Olier’s spiritual director and helped him persevere in his vocation. They highly regarded one another and collaborated. However, Olier was “one of the purest examples” of the French school of spirituality; Vincent was not of that school, although it influenced him. Both were Christocentric, but Vincent saw Christ in poor persons where Olier focused on the Holy Spirit. Both were concerned with following providence, but for Olier “providence” was interchangeable with “the Spirit” and it was …

Many Strokes Of The Lash: André Duval, Tim Williams C.M. Oct 2008

Many Strokes Of The Lash: André Duval, Tim Williams C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul held Andre Duval in high esteem as a holy man. Duval helped him see that starting the Congregation was God’s will. Vincent often consulted him, so much so that Duval “became a sort of theologian and canonist” for the Congregation. His life, career, and relationships with Pierre de Berulle and Vincent are treated here. Duval taught theology at the Sorbonne and was influential in the establishment of the Reformed Carmelites and in the reform of many other religious orders and institutes. His views on papal authority came to be known as Duvalism and were well received. He …

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Religious Orientation, Object Relations, And Positive Adjustment, Scott Robert Brown Jun 2008

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Religious Orientation, Object Relations, And Positive Adjustment, Scott Robert Brown

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Many studies have found positive relationships between religion and mental health. This study explored the relationships between Religious Orientations, Positive Adjustment, and Object Relations. Intrinsics live by their religion, whereas Extrinsics use their religion for other ends (Allport & Ross, 1967), and Questers explore religion (Batson & Schoenrade, 1991a, 1991b). Positive Adjustment, a latent variable, consisted of Life Satisfaction (Pavot & Diener, 1993), Hope (Snyder, Harris, et al., 1991), Optimism (Scheier, Carver, & Bridges, 1994), and Flow (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975b, 1982). Object Relations refers to an individual’s interpersonal dynamics and attachment style (Rizzuto, 1979; Winnicott, 1971) and were posited to play …

Through The Glass Darkly: New Paradigms For Counselors, Courage, And Spirituality In Contemporary Education, Judy Goodell, David C. Robinson Jun 2008

Through The Glass Darkly: New Paradigms For Counselors, Courage, And Spirituality In Contemporary Education, Judy Goodell, David C. Robinson

Journal of Catholic Education

This article proposes a paradigm shift in the view of the school counselor role. Evolving from the dualistic mind/body split of traditional physics, counseling has largely focused on problem identification and attempting to fix what is wrong. The new sciences of chaos and complexity invite a more holistic view, with the psychospiritual development of all students seen as an appropriate part of a comprehensive education. School counselors are well placed to mentor the psychospiritual development of all students and to facilitate the presence of spirituality on school sites. Two complementary models, Courage to Teach/Lead and the Ignatian model of Spiritual …

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between The Scoring Rubrics Inventory And The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory As Reported By Secondary School Core-Subject Teachers, Paula Marie Pucheu May 2008

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between The Scoring Rubrics Inventory And The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory As Reported By Secondary School Core-Subject Teachers, Paula Marie Pucheu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The promise of increased student achievement through educational reform is delivered still-born if teachers do not know how to implement complex instructional practices and sophisticated analysis of student performance. Metacognitive awareness is crucial to the adoption and application of proven educational initiatives. Teachers who successfully implement criterion-referenced assessment instruction, scoring rubrics, transfer to their students the metacognitive knowledge and skills of how to learn. This study is predicated on the research assumptions that metacognition and its attendant skills are critical to the successful implementation of scoring rubrics. A researcher-developed instrument, the Scoring Rubrics Inventory (SRI) and the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory …

Making Prayer The Core Feature Of The Evangelical Church, John H. Arnold May 2008

Making Prayer The Core Feature Of The Evangelical Church, John H. Arnold

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of the research is to bring to light the scriptural history of prayer and discipleship in the early church. Based on surveys sent to pastors, ministerial students, and church workers, facts and assumptions are derived about the priority of prayer in the individual and corporate life of the church. A practical plan is set forth to correct the deficiency of prayer in the local church.

An Authentic Human Being With A 17th C. Flair: Fenelon Spiritual Letters And Existentialism, Megan Levy Jan 2008

An Authentic Human Being With A 17th C. Flair: Fenelon Spiritual Letters And Existentialism, Megan Levy

Theology Conference Papers

This is an invitation for the mind and the heart to cross the threshold into another dimension in time and explore the parallels between Existential Psychotherapy concepts and Fenelon’s Christian Spiritual Letters written 300 years ago. Christianity and Existentialism are “individualistic” approaches focused on self-awareness, self-responsibility, and ownership to facilitate personal change; both ask for commitment, and none of them offer easy ways or painless quests. Christian spiritual letters as a personal growth tool are centred on Jesus, a self-actualizer, who fits every characteristic described by Maslow.

The Problem Of Prayerlessness (Chapter 35 Of Giving Ourselves To Prayer), Marykate Morse Jan 2008

The Problem Of Prayerlessness (Chapter 35 Of Giving Ourselves To Prayer), Marykate Morse

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Prayer is probably the core spiritual practice of the Christian faith. Yet, despite the example of Jesus and the early church it is often an anemic part of our lives. A common response to this reality is to label prayerlessness-not taking time to pray-a sin problem. Jesus told us to pray, so we should pray. If we are not praying, the solution is to confess and repent, and then start praying. "Start praying" usually means attending prayer groups, keeping prayer notebooks, and interceding on behalf of others during one's daily quiet time. However, in all my years of teaching prayer …

John Wesley In Conversation With The Emerging Church, Patrick S. Franklin Jan 2008

John Wesley In Conversation With The Emerging Church, Patrick S. Franklin

The Asbury Journal

As the Emerging Church is one of the most significant developments in current popular Western ecclesiology, it is important that it be engaged theologically. As part of this engagement, this paper brings the Emerging Church into a constructive dialogue with John Wesley, a theologian who shared similar passions and faced comparable challenges. It maintains that Wesley would applaud the spirit and creativity of the Emerging Church, especially its mission to reach contemporary seekers and its desire to recapture an ancient-future faith. However, he would also challenge some potentially harmful tendencies and exhort the Emerging Church toward maturity in these areas. …
