For many college students, spring break means hanging outon the beach and partying with their friends. For ninesenior Clemson nursing students, the spring break of 2008 will be remembered as one with lots of hard work, long hours of travel and service to others. The nursing students tookpart in a medical mission in several rural villages near Macas, Ecuador, through a partnership with Volunteers in Medical Missions. The students received academic credit for the clinical component of community health nursing. Community health nursing utilizes service-learning as a pedagogy for teaching community care, social justice and cultural competence. While all students …

U.S. Counterterrorism In Sub-Saharan Africa: Understanding Costs, Cultures, And Conflicts, Donovan C. Chau Dr.
U.S. Counterterrorism In Sub-Saharan Africa: Understanding Costs, Cultures, And Conflicts, Donovan C. Chau Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has never been the centerpiece of U.S. foreign and defense policy. Yet the current struggle between the United States and its allies against terrorist groups and individuals motivated by Islamic extremism thrusts SSA forward as a front in the global conflict. The author asks, centrally, what is the most effective long-term approach to U.S. counterterrorism in SSA. By comparing views in Washington, DC, with perspectives from SSA, he assesses that a fundamental and dangerous misunderstanding of SSA may be leading U.S. policy astray. Recommending a new grand strategic approach to U.S. counterterrorism policy, he suggests urgently educating …

Latino Middle School Students Read To Learn Critical Literacy: Social Justice Through Action Research, Jennifer Grenardo
Latino Middle School Students Read To Learn Critical Literacy: Social Justice Through Action Research, Jennifer Grenardo
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This action research study explored if changes in the reading curriculum, specifically implementation of critical literacy approaches that acknowledge bicultural students, increase student learning as perceived by teachers and students in a Catholic elementary school, where students have been chronically performing at the lowest level in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. By using critical pedagogy (Darder, 1991; Freire, 1970; Giroux, 1983; Macedo, 1994; McLaren, 1988) as a theoretical framework, this action research project investigated the effective elements of critical literacy (Cadiero-Kaplan, 2004; Shor & Pari, 1999) that promote academic learning for Latino middle school students in a low-income Catholic elementary …
Sustainable Control Of Ascaris Lumbricoides (Worms) In A Rural, Disease Endemic And Developing Community: A Systems Approach, Monica Annmarie Gray
Sustainable Control Of Ascaris Lumbricoides (Worms) In A Rural, Disease Endemic And Developing Community: A Systems Approach, Monica Annmarie Gray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Parasitic infections, inadequate sanitation, and poor nutrition represent major etiologies that operate in synergy to cause some of the world's most disabling diseases. Citizens of developing nations, especially children living in rural areas, are the most affected. Current research and subsequent interventions have attempted to solve these issues using vertical interventions aimed at minimizing specific health outcomes. This approach does not consider the interaction among causes and the interrelationship between human beings and their environment. Challenges solved in this manner often fail to produce sustainable results or worse, create new problems.
This project proposed the systems approach framework to address …
Engineering A Global-Minded Citizen: The Impact Of International Service Projects On Students Engaged In Ewb, Maria Perez-Colón
Engineering A Global-Minded Citizen: The Impact Of International Service Projects On Students Engaged In Ewb, Maria Perez-Colón
Theses and Dissertations
In order to explore the benefits of student engagement in Engineers Without Borders (EWB) on participants, a blended method was utilized to study the transformative impact of international service learning projects on selected undergraduate students' global perspective. Students currently engaged in EWB, and preparing for travel abroad to a project site, were surveyed prior to travel using the Global-Mindedness Scale (GMS) to determine global perspective within the following dimensions: interconnectedness, cultural pluralism, responsibility, globalcentrism, and efficacy. Upon return from the mission, the GMS was re-administered to note changes, if any, to original responses. Pre-travel questionnaires and post- travel interviews were …
