Exploration Of Multiple Pathways For The Development Of Immersive Virtual Reality Environments, Kevin Laurence Garrison
Exploration Of Multiple Pathways For The Development Of Immersive Virtual Reality Environments, Kevin Laurence Garrison
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this thesis is the study and recommendation of optimal techniques for developing immersive virtual environments for generic applications. The overarching objective is to ensure that virtual environments can be created and deployed, rapidly and accurately, using commercial off-the-shelf software. Specific subjective and objective criteria have been employed to determine trade-offs between multiple pathways for designing such environments and specific recommendations are made for the applicability of each. The efficacy of the techniques developed as part of this research work has been demonstrated by applying them to three widely differing areas - visualizing arbitrary 2D surface data, synthesis …
Personality Factors Influencing Bemidji State University Industrial Technology Majors Making Heavy Industrial Construction Career Choices, Timothy M. Brockman
Personality Factors Influencing Bemidji State University Industrial Technology Majors Making Heavy Industrial Construction Career Choices, Timothy M. Brockman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to apply Holland's theory and gather information about Bemidji State University (BSU) construction management (CM) students, CM graduates, CM faculty, and the heavy industrial construction workforce for a greater understanding of students, the academic environment, and the heavy industrial construction environment. A secondary purpose was to help increase recruitment and retention of students within the CM emphasis of the Industrial Technology major at BSU, and provide support for development of curricula within the CM emphasis as it meets needs of the construction industry. The study examined five research questions using Holland's Self-Directed Search (SDS) …

"The Image-Interface": New Forms Of Narrative Visualization, Space And Time In Postmodern Cinema, Chiara Armentano
"The Image-Interface": New Forms Of Narrative Visualization, Space And Time In Postmodern Cinema, Chiara Armentano
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This essay argues for an analysis of the narrative models of postmodern cinema by looking at them as visualization forms re-mediated (Bolter and Grusin 1999) by new media's formal structures. Instead of being organized in a classical way through causal and temporal logics, contemporary storytelling models seem to be structured according to "casual," "catalogue" and "homogeneous" aggregative logics following the "database" and "navigable space" visual forms of new media (Manovich 2001). The conventional "narrative" paradigm (Metz 1974; Branigan 1992, Jullier 1997) in postmodern film seems to be fully "fragmented," following textual organization models similar to computer logic and aesthetics. This …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
This year represents the thirteenth year of annual multidisciplinary conferences dedicated to student scholarship at Central Washington University. In 1996, CWU sponsored the first Undergraduate Research Symposium, a showcase of faculty-mentored undergraduate student research. This event was an innovative forum for developing student scholarship that gained attention far beyond CWU. Since 1996, the undergraduate symposium expanded to include other student scholarly activity, and the broader scope was reflected in a new name in 1998, the Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression, commonly referred to as SOURCE.
A Comparison Of The Aptitude And Attitude Of College Students Toward Social And Technical Computer Technology, Kathleen Smith
A Comparison Of The Aptitude And Attitude Of College Students Toward Social And Technical Computer Technology, Kathleen Smith
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate college students' technical and social technology competencies based upon their attitudes toward computers and their perception of technical computer knowledge. The participants for this investigation were college undergraduates majoring in apparel merchandising and design and other related and non-related majors at the University of Arkansas. The research model selected for use in this study was the survey design method. There were a total of 1270 students responding to the survey with 1052 usable surveys remaining after cleaning the data for missing entries. This constituted an 83% response rate. The findings included significant …

Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings And Collected Textiles, University Of New England Art Gallery
Exhibition Catalogues
Alice Spencer - Fabricating Time: Paintings and Collected Textiles is the catalogue from the University of New England Art Gallery’s November 13, 2008—January 11, 2009 exhibition of the paintings and collection of Alice Spencer. The paintings in Fabricating Time are improvisational compositions, incorporating patterns chosen for their strong graphic nature, including changing scale and intricacy. These patterns serve as a metaphor for the evolution of the human spirit through time. The exhibition was designed as a dialogue between the paintings and the source of their inspiration - the hand-woven, embroidered, resist dyed and pieced textiles Spencer collected on trips throughout …
Effectiveness Of Regular Online Quizzing In Increasing Class Participation And Preparation, Michael Marcell
Effectiveness Of Regular Online Quizzing In Increasing Class Participation And Preparation, Michael Marcell
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Research suggests that frequent, regularly scheduled quizzing is associated with pedagogically desirable outcomes such as higher performance on exams. It was hypothesized that requiring students to complete brief scheduled online quizzes on assigned reading material before class would also result in increases in both the number of in-class questions and comments and the number of students who read the material prior to class. For each of 3 semesters, students in 1 section of introductory psychology who took time-limited, out-of-class, “open-book” WebCT quizzes on daily readings were compared to students in another section who did not take quizzes during that unit. …
