Exploring Producers', Staff Members', And Board Members' Cognitive Frame On Decision Making In An Appalachian Organic Farming Venture, Curt D. Gervich, Max Stephensen Jr., Marc J. Stern
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Sustainable development assistance organizations (SDAOs) aim to help producers of natural resource products move their goods and services to market. This article explores how the cognitive frames held by producers, staff, and board members in an agricultural SDAO in rural Appalachia influence organizational decision-making. This study explores identity, characterization, value, and membership frames. Data collected through semi-structured interviews with growers, staff, and board members reveal that the frames these stakeholders hold lead to the institutionalization of decision-making processes that allow organizational managers to make quick, consistent, and clear decisions while avoiding conflicts among members who hold competing frames. Simultaneously, these …

The Impact Of Rural-Urban Migration On Plantation Agriculture In The Niger Delta Region, Nigeria, Albert Ukaro Ofuoku, Christopher Okeleke Chukwuji
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study was carried out to unveil the impact of rural-urban migration on plantation agriculture productivity in the Niger-Delta Region of Nigeria. Data were collected from 660 rural households and managers/supervisors of 15 selected oil palm, rubber, and cocoa plantations in the Niger-Delta Region. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Most migrants were able bodied young adults. Labor shortage was experienced by all the visited plantations. Due to labor shortages, most of the plantations could not harvest completely. This resulted in foregone revenue for the plantations. Rural-urban migration significantly and positively correlated with labor …

Mississippi Business Environment Before And After Katrina: Challenges And Opportunities, Domenico Parisi, Steven Michael Grice, Jed Pressgrove
Mississippi Business Environment Before And After Katrina: Challenges And Opportunities, Domenico Parisi, Steven Michael Grice, Jed Pressgrove
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Valid, reliable, and, most importantly, timely information is the most critical aspect for the design and implementation of successful emergency management strategies. This goal, however, is rarely achieved during the aftermath of a disaster. In this paper, we showcase how we used administrative records to assist Mississippi in evaluating the overall impact of Katrina on the state’s economy. Specifically, we assisted the state in developing a methodology to generate valid, reliable, and timely information on (1) the business environment and labor market and (2) rehiring and hiring practices. This information was used by the state to design recovery strategies and …

The Undergraduate Research Journal
Historic Cairo is characterized by richness in Islamic heritage. Although attempts at conserving this heritage have been put forward in the past, efforts have been ineffective in some cases and, in most cases, unsustainable. Several problems and obstacles have been debilitating these efforts. This research project aims at providing practical insights on how these problems can be remedied and how the effectiveness of conservation efforts in Historic Cairo can be made more effective through the application of business concepts such as synergy and sustainability.

Education: A Step Into The Future, Mikel Mihkail, Layla Arafa, Zena Sallam, Farah Ismail

Programs and initiatives funded by the government have demonstrated an inability to deal with the growing demand for education. Due to a sheer lack of financial resources, primary schools have fallen back both on supplying basic necessities, such as books and stationary, and on delivering a quality of education on par with other countries in the region. Despite its shortcomings, the government remains the single largest financial contributor to primary school education in Egypt. The contribution of the private sector to the funding of the education system has, over the past five years, stagnated to a meager 6.9% of total …

Macroh2a1 Knockdown Effects On The Peg3 Imprinted Domain, Jung Ha Choo, Jeong Do Kim, Joomyeong Kim
Faculty Publications
Background: MacroH2A1 is a histone variant that is closely associated with the repressed regions of chromosomes. A recent study revealed that this histone variant is highly enriched in the inactive alleles of Imprinting Control Regions (ICRs). Results: The current study investigates the potential roles of macroH2A1 in genomic imprinting by lowering the cellular levels of the macroH2A1 protein. RNAi-based macroH2A1 knockdown experiments in Neuro2A cells changed the expression levels of a subset of genes, including Peg3 and Usp29 of the Peg3 domain. The expression of these genes was down-regulated, rather than up-regulated, in response to reduced protein levels of the …

Why The No Child Left Behind Act Needs To Be Restructured To Accomplish Its Goals And How To Do It, Gershon M. Ratner
Why The No Child Left Behind Act Needs To Be Restructured To Accomplish Its Goals And How To Do It, Gershon M. Ratner
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The No Child Left Behind Act ("NCLB" or the "Act") 1 has created a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve American public education. NCLB has embraced vital goals for the new Information Age: academic proficiency for virtually all public school students and elimination of the severe racial/income "achievement gap." The Act provides four pillars on which states and localities might build a bridge to reach the goals: higher standards; periodic testing to measure the extent to which the standards are being met; disaggregating test results by student subgroup; and reporting to the public. The critical question is "how to …

Charter Schools And Special Education: Part Of The Solution Or Part Of The Problem?, Rebekah Gleason
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)1 provides each child with a disability the opportunity to receive educational benefit in an appropriate program. The individual needs of the child drive the often resource intensive programs. On the other hand, public charter schools focus on providing more choices for education by aiming to do a better job with less money. Public Charter Schools accountability for progress and fiscal responsibility means that schools focus on doing more with less resources for the school as a whole. Public Charter schools' mission of unique innovative instruction, free from local and state regulations that would …

Two Tailors: The Pursuit Of Racial Justice In 1970s Chicago, Susan L. Waysdorf
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Every legal case has a story behind it, and some, like this one, also have a legacy. This is a story about two immigrant tailors in Chicago-the white tailor's attempt to sell his tailor shop to the black tailor, and the racial discrimination they confronted together. One tailor, Ivan Thompson, was a black citizen of Great Britain living in Chicago, and the other, Martin Waysdorf, was a white Jew from Poland. He became a. U.S. citizen in 1949, after emigrating from his Polish shtetl to Chicago and escaping the Nazi Holocaust.' The Jewish tailor was my father. This article will …

Objective: The number of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) worldwide has increased as a result of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pandemic. New Life Home (NLH) specialises in the care of infants who have been orphaned or abandoned, often because of their exposure to HIV and places them for adoption. This paper documents the lessons learnt from the Home’s first 8.5 years of existence. Methods: This retrospective study analyses the pattern of the 490 infants admitted at NLH. The characteristics of the infants’ stay are analysed: bio-data, weight, HIV exposure, referring organisation/agent and outcome. This study ceased to follow infants …
