Gaining Attention And Encouraging A Response: My Criteria For Successful Graphic Design., Kerry Scott Jenkins
Gaining Attention And Encouraging A Response: My Criteria For Successful Graphic Design., Kerry Scott Jenkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a graphic designer, my goal is to clearly express my clients' message to their intended audience. Based on the diversity of my clients and their products and services, finding a consistent style in my projects might be difficult, although there are usually some typical traits. With examples of my work and dialogue from leaders in the graphic design industry, I intend to point out a common thread that runs through all successful design projects, regardless of the projects' designer, era, or individual design elements (e.g., typography, copywriting, color, layout, imagery). Success comes from graphic design's ability to gain attention …
Importance And Availability Of Content And Communication Skills Among Entry-Level Interpretive Naturalists, Jonathan Ivey
Importance And Availability Of Content And Communication Skills Among Entry-Level Interpretive Naturalists, Jonathan Ivey
All Theses
Interpretation seeks to help visitors to make intellectual and emotional connections between themselves and park resources through a communication process. To accomplish this goal, interpreters must be intimately knowledgeable of park resources as well as excellent communicators. The details of what types of knowledge and communication skills are most important to interpretive naturalists have not been formally documented. Likewise, little is formally known about the availability of each skill in pools of entry-level applicants for interpretive positions. This study documented the varying importance and availability of content and communication skills for entry-level interpretive naturalists, based on the perceptions of experienced …
Figuring The Digital, Molly Morin
Figuring The Digital, Molly Morin
All Theses
This body of work is a way of understanding, reflecting on, and contributing to a contemporary dialogue about the impact of digital technology and the Internet on society by looking at the organization of information that lies behind the computer screen, and creating work that is sourced directly from the Internet but becomes a tangible object in the physical world. I use methods of mass production and marketing to create artwork that values individuality over homogenization and complexity over efficiency, co-opting practical digital technology for the purposes of physical beauty. The work should inspire a sense of wonder through its …

Graduate And Employer Perceptions Regarding Job Preparedness Skills Of Design Technology Graduates, Bonnie Higgins
Graduate And Employer Perceptions Regarding Job Preparedness Skills Of Design Technology Graduates, Bonnie Higgins
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate graduate and employer perceptions in regard to the job preparedness level of graduates from a design technology program at a single Midwestern university in five skill category areas: (a) general work habits and skills, (b) communication skills, (c) technical skills, (d) graphic communication skills, and (e) project management skills.
This study was conducted as evaluation research and implemented an internal formative evaluation conducted through the administration of surveys to two distinct groups. Fifty-nine (27.4%) program graduates from 2001 -2006 completed and returned the 19-item survey, while twenty-seven (67.5%) employers of program graduates …

A Theoretical Framework For Quality-Aware Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Communications, Song Chi, Haohong Wang, Dalei Wu
A Theoretical Framework For Quality-Aware Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Communications, Song Chi, Haohong Wang, Dalei Wu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Although cross-layer has been thought as one of themost effective and efficient ways formultimedia communications over wireless networks and a plethora of research has been done in this area, there is still lacking of a rigorous mathematical model to gain indepth understanding of cross-layer design tradeoffs, spanning from application layer to physical layer. As a result, many existing cross-layer designs enhance the performance of certain layers at the price of either introducing side effects to the overall system performance or violating the syntax and semantics of the layered network architecture. Therefore, lacking of a rigorous theoretical study makes existing cross-layer …
Situating The Perception And Communication Of Flood Risk: Components And Strategies, Heather M. Bell
Situating The Perception And Communication Of Flood Risk: Components And Strategies, Heather M. Bell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Loss prevention and distribution must begin well before a flood event at multiple levels. However, the benchmarks and terminology we use to manage and communicate flood risk may be working against this goal. U.S. flood policy is based upon a flood with a one percent chance of occurring in any year. Commonly called the "hundred year flood," it has been upheld as a policy criterion, but many have questioned the effectiveness of hundred year flood terminology in public communication.
This research examined public perceptions of the hundred year flood and evaluated the comparative effectiveness of this term and two other …
