Short And Long-Term Changes In The Fish Assemblages Of Bayou Lacombe, Louisiana, Jeffrey M. Van Vrancken Dec 2007

Short And Long-Term Changes In The Fish Assemblages Of Bayou Lacombe, Louisiana, Jeffrey M. Van Vrancken

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the past thirty-five years, anthropogenic disturbances around Bayou Lacombe have altered its fish assemblage. In 2005, the impact of Hurricane Katrina on southeast Louisiana presented me with a unique opportunity to explore the effects of a catastrophic storm on the Bayou. I explored the effects of natural and human disturbances on the Bayou's fish assemblage by electrofishing six historically sampled stations. My research goals were to determine: 1) which Bayou Lacombe fish assemblages were most resilient to the multiple effects of Hurricane Katrina, 2) if there were significant differences in the Bayou's fish assemblages over the past 35 years …

A Kenyan Revolution: Mau Mau, Land, Women, And Nation., Amanda Elizabeth Lewis Dec 2007

A Kenyan Revolution: Mau Mau, Land, Women, And Nation., Amanda Elizabeth Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Kikuyu, the largest ethnic group in Kenya, resisted colonial authority, which culminated into what became known as Mau Mau, led by the Kenya Land Freedom Army. During this time, the British colonial government imposed laws limiting their access to land, politics, and independence. The turbulent 1950s in Kenyan history should be considered a revolution because of its violent nature, the high level of participation, and overall social change that resulted from the war.

I compared many theories of revolution to the events of the Mau Mau movement. Then, I explained the contention for land in the revolution, the role …

The Impact Of A Large Automotive Manufacturing Plant On Demographic Expansion And Educational Changes In A Mississippi School District, Ronnie Lynn Mcgehee Dec 2007

The Impact Of A Large Automotive Manufacturing Plant On Demographic Expansion And Educational Changes In A Mississippi School District, Ronnie Lynn Mcgehee

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine one school district’s response to the largest automobile plant in North America being built in its county. An economic development package worth in excess of one billion dollars would surely change the landscape of the community and the district for years to come, but how should the district respond? Nissan North America announced in November of 2000 that it would build the largest automobile plant in North America in Canton, Mississippi. This plant would employee over four thousand employees and thirteen suppliers to that plant that would employee another five to six thousand employees …

The Wehrmarcht: Soldiers And Germans During The Second World War, Neil Varble Dec 2007

The Wehrmarcht: Soldiers And Germans During The Second World War, Neil Varble

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The German Army, also known as the Wehrmacht, fought a brutal war on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. These soldiers, under the command of military officials of the Nazi state, vowed to destroy Bolshevism and Jewish populations. By examining letters from soldiers to family members on the German home front as well as letters from families to the men on the front lines, a better understanding of the motivations of war is revealed. Letters of these men and family members present insight into a vast area of research in German twentieth century history. An estimated 20 to …

Molecular Interactions Between The Wilms' Tumor Transcription Factor And The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor During Nephrogenesis And Its Impact On Fetal Programming Of Renal Disease., Adrian Nanez Dec 2007

Molecular Interactions Between The Wilms' Tumor Transcription Factor And The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor During Nephrogenesis And Its Impact On Fetal Programming Of Renal Disease., Adrian Nanez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Embryonic development requires the orchestration of temporally precise genetic events that culminate in the formation of a complete organism. The molecular mechanisms responsible for ontogenesis are regulated by environmental and somatic factors in utero that activate or repress the expression of numerous genetic elements resulting in fetal programming of adult diseases. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is an important nuclear transcription factor both during embryogenesis and throughout maturity in multiple organisms. Building upon interesting studies establishing a direct, novel link between AHR and post-transcriptional regulation of the Wilms' tumor suppressor ( WT1 ) gene, the overall goal of the project …

Performance-Based Assessment Within A Balanced Literacy Framework: An Analysis Of Teacher Perceptions And Implementation In Elementary Classrooms, Amy Mcgowan Duke Dec 2007

Performance-Based Assessment Within A Balanced Literacy Framework: An Analysis Of Teacher Perceptions And Implementation In Elementary Classrooms, Amy Mcgowan Duke

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This mixed methods study explored the perspectives of thirty-nine (N=39) elementary teachers employed in four elementary schools in one school district in Georgia regarding the use of performance-based assessment strategies within an all encompassing balanced literacy framework for instruction. Participants were surveyed on their use of performance-based assessment strategies, and both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. This study draws on the research regarding the dichotomy that exists between standardized tests and the performance-based assessment practices of teachers implementing balanced literacy. Because teacher buy-in is critical to the success of any curricular initiative, inquiry into teacher perceptions of their role …

Genome-Wide Transcriptional Profiling Of The Cyclic Amp-Dependent Signaling Pathway During Morphogenic Transitions Of Candida Albicans, Yong-Sun Bahn, Matthew Molenda, Janet F. Staab, Courtney A. Lyman, Laura J. Gordon, Paula Sundstrom Dec 2007

Genome-Wide Transcriptional Profiling Of The Cyclic Amp-Dependent Signaling Pathway During Morphogenic Transitions Of Candida Albicans, Yong-Sun Bahn, Matthew Molenda, Janet F. Staab, Courtney A. Lyman, Laura J. Gordon, Paula Sundstrom

Dartmouth Scholarship

Candida albicans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen that causes systemic candidiasis as well as superficial mucosal candidiasis. In response to the host environment, C. albicans transitions between yeast and hyphal forms. In particular, hyphal growth is important in facilitating adhesion and invasion of host tissues, concomitant with the expression of various hypha-specific virulence factors. In previous work, we showed that the cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling pathway plays a crucial role in morphogenic transitions and virulence of C. albicans by studying genes encoding adenylate cyclase-associated protein (CAP1) and high-affinity phosphodiesterase (PDE2) (Y. S. Bahn, J. Staab, and P. Sundstrom, Mol. …

Characterization Of Na+/H+Exchanger-3 (Nhe3) In The Gills Of Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Curtis Eugene Lanier Dec 2007

Characterization Of Na+/H+Exchanger-3 (Nhe3) In The Gills Of Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus), Curtis Eugene Lanier

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Acid-base regulation is a vital mechanism in homeostasis. Fish must maintain optimal physiological acid-base parameters during changes in an aquatic habitat. Environmental factors such as changes in salinity affect fish ability to maintain optimal blood plasma ion concentrations. Ion regulation influences the fish ability to maintain optimal acid-base balance. The Na+/H+ Exchanger-3 (NHE-3) has been shown to be the primary membrane ion transporter responsible for acid-base balance in the mammalian kidney. The objective of this study is to characterize NHE-3 in the gills of longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecimspinosus).

Beyond Foraging: Behavioral Science And The Future Of Institutional Economics, Alexander J. Field Dec 2007

Beyond Foraging: Behavioral Science And The Future Of Institutional Economics, Alexander J. Field

Economics

Institutions affect economic outcomes, but variation in them cannot be directly linked to environmental factors such as geography, climate, or technological availabilities. Game theoretic approaches, based as they typically are on foraging only assumptions, do not provide an adequate foundation for understanding the intervening role of politics and ideology; nor does the view that culture and institutions are entirely socially constructed. Understanding what institutions are and how they influence behavior requires an approach that is in part biological, focusing on cognitive and behavioral adaptations for social interaction favored in the past by group selection. These adaptations, along with their effects …

Black Feminist Autobiographical Inquiry Into The Experiences Of A Teen Mom, Advis Dell Wilkerson Dec 2007

Black Feminist Autobiographical Inquiry Into The Experiences Of A Teen Mom, Advis Dell Wilkerson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using Black feminist thought as the theoretical framework and autobiographical inquiry as methodology, I explored ways in which adversity fostered resiliency of character. Despite difficult circumstances, such as growing up in a poor, single-parent household and becoming pregnant in the 9th grade when continuing one's education after pregnancy or marriage was not permitted in the Deep South, with the help of others, I fought to finish my high school education and succeeded in college. I credit a close bond with a supportive adult and my own development of racial awareness with helping me to turn obstacles into successes. My intent …

Traditional Natural Resources Management Practices And Biodiversity Conservation In Ghana: A Review Of Local Concepts And Issues On Change And Sustainability, Paul Sarfo-Mensah, W. Oduro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper reviews the importance of traditional natural resources management practices in Ghana. It highlights the roles of traditional beliefs, taboos and rituals in the management and conservation of key natural resources in the country. The paper is based on desk studies undertaken as part of anthropological studies conducted in the forest-savanna transitional agroecological zone of Ghana to study the spirituality of forests and conservation. Among the major conclusions of the paper is that although the potential of traditional natural resources management for biodiversity conservation in Ghana is enormous, the sustainability of these practices is seriously threatened. This stems from …

Lebanese Diaspora And Homeland Relations, Guita Hourani Oct 2007

Lebanese Diaspora And Homeland Relations, Guita Hourani

Faculty Journal Articles

Although Lebanese emigrants have always been part of Lebanon’s life, Lebanon has not actually had a specific diaspora policy. This discussion paper will not deal with the migration process, or the motives for migration. It will focus, instead, on some selected aspects of the Lebanese diaspora and homeland relations. It will draw attention to some of the important networks connecting the Lebanese diaspora with Lebanon and will review courses of action undertaken by the Lebanese government to strengthen ties with its diaspora.

The Clergy Of Early Seventeenth-Century France: Self-Perception And Society's Perception, J. M. Hayden, Malcolm R. Greenshields Oct 2007

The Clergy Of Early Seventeenth-Century France: Self-Perception And Society's Perception, J. M. Hayden, Malcolm R. Greenshields

Vincentian Studies

To understand the nature of the seventeenth-century French church, one must understand the rural clergy and their parishioners; the majority of the population was rural. One glimpse of how the clergy perceived themselves and how others viewed them is given in the cahiers de doleances prepared by each estate for the Estates General of 1614. The article also explores the First Estate’s role in society and the reformation of the clergy proposed by all three estates. The elite are best represented in the cahiers of the First and Third Estates, while a cross-section of the Second Estate is represented. Nonetheless, …

Compact Modeling Of Neutron Damage Effects In A Bipolar Junction Transistor, Teresa Gutierrez Sep 2007

Compact Modeling Of Neutron Damage Effects In A Bipolar Junction Transistor, Teresa Gutierrez

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The performance of microelectronics in a radiation environment is an important concern for defense and space applications. Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), in particular, are susceptible to neutron radiation. Neutron radiation affects BJT performance primarily by creating lattice defects, which can dramatically increase carrier recombination rate. In turn, the increase in recombination rate degrades the current gain. Two approaches were taken in the development of a compact BJT model that include the effects of static neutron damage. One approach is based on the Gummel-Poon term for recombination current. The other approach is based on the Shockley-Read-Hall theory of recombination. Simulation results …
