Geomorphic History Of The Atchafalaya Backwater Area: Upper Deltaic Plain Development, Louis D. Britsch
Geomorphic History Of The Atchafalaya Backwater Area: Upper Deltaic Plain Development, Louis D. Britsch
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Earlier researchers have produced conceptual models of Mississippi River delta plain development which divide the deltaic plain into upper and lower reaches. The upper deltaic plain has been described as an area composed mainly of lacustrine, lacustrine delta, backswamp, and crevasse channels, with minimal distributary development. The lower deltaic plain is characterized by numerous distributaries forming distributary systems and lobes. Detailed geomorphic mapping and chronologic reconstruction within the Atchafalaya Backwater Area of the upper deltaic plain of the Mississippi River has led to the recognition of a complex network of distributary development related to three distinct distributary systems that formed …

The Global Stratotype Section And Point (Gssp) For The Base Of The Katian Stage Of The Upper Ordovician Series At Black Knob Ridge, Southeastern Oklahoma, Usa, Daniel Goldman, Stephen A. Leslie, Jaak Nõlvak, Seth Young, Stig M. Bergström, Warren D. Huff
Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications
The International Subcomission on Ordovician Stratigraphy (ISOS) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) recently defined the base of the global Upper Ordovician Series to be at the first appearance datum (FAD) of the graptolite species Nemagraptus gracilis in the Fågelsång GSSP in southern Sweden. This designation recognized the tremendous utility for global correlation of the first appearance of a cosmopolitan taxon that occurs within a consistent succession of other first appearance datums (e.g., Finney and Bergström, 1986; Bergström et al., 2000). Current efforts by the ISOS have focused on subdividing the Upper Ordovician into three stages and choosing appropriate …
Cooperative Localization In Wireless Networked Systems, Mauricio Castillo-Effen
Cooperative Localization In Wireless Networked Systems, Mauricio Castillo-Effen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A novel solution for the localization of wireless networked systems is presented. The solution is based on cooperative estimation, inter-node ranging and strap-down inertial navigation. This approach overrides limitations that are commonly found in currently available localization/positioning solutions. Some solutions, such as GPS, make use of previously deployed infrastructure. In other methods, computations are performed in a central fusion center. In the robotics field, current localization techniques rely on a simultaneous localization and mapping, (SLAM), process, which is slow and requires sensors such as laser range finders or cameras.
One of the main attributes of this research is the holistic …

Land Surface Temperature And Emissivity Retrieval From Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Marvin Boonmee
Land Surface Temperature And Emissivity Retrieval From Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Marvin Boonmee
Theses
A new algorithm, optimized land surface temperature and emissivity retrieval (OLSTER), is presented to compensate for atmospheric effects and retrieve land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity from airborne thermal infrared hyperspectral data. The OLSTER algorithm is designed to retrieve properties of both natural and man-made materials. Multi-directional or multi-temporal observations are not required, and the scenes do not have to be dominated by blackbody features. The OLSTER algorithm consists of a preprocessing step, an iterative search for nearblackbody pixels, and an iterative constrained optimization loop. The preprocessing step provides initial estimates of LST per pixel and the atmospheric parameters of …
Sediment Flux And Fate In The Mississippi River Diversion At West Bay: Observation Study, T. Mitchell Andrus, Samuel J. Bentley
Sediment Flux And Fate In The Mississippi River Diversion At West Bay: Observation Study, T. Mitchell Andrus, Samuel J. Bentley
Faculty Publications
Land-building sediment diversions, such as the Mississippi River Diversion at West Bay, are being used as important building blocks in the conservation and restoration of Mississippi Delta wetlands. We have studied sediment deposition and retention in the West Bay diversion outfall area through analyses of sediment cores, bathymetry, and hydrodynamics. Cores and x-ray samples were collected at twenty stations in March 2004, August 2004, November 2005, and April 2006. Cores were sub-sampled in 2 cm increments and analyzed for grain size distributions and 7Be activities which can be linked to recent sediment deposition. Bathymetric surveys were conducted in November 2005 …
Geologic Setting Of Mosul Dam And Its Engineering Implications, Julie R. Kelley, Lillian D. Wakeley, Seth W. Broadfoot
Geologic Setting Of Mosul Dam And Its Engineering Implications, Julie R. Kelley, Lillian D. Wakeley, Seth W. Broadfoot
KIP Articles
The geologic setting of Mosul Dam is critically important for its engineering implications and its usefulness and contribution to engineer- ing and operational decisions about the dam. The dam was constructed on alternating and highly variable units of gypsum, anhydrite, marl, and lime- stone, each of which is soluble in water under the environmental and hydrogeologic conditions of the dam. From a geologic standpoint, the foundation is very poor, and the site geology is the principal cause of con- tinuing intense concern about the safety of the structure. Mineralogic variability within rock units resulted from original depositional processes that created …
Geologic Conceptual Model Of Mosul Dam, Lillian D. Wakeley, Julie R. Kelley, Monte L. Pearson
Geologic Conceptual Model Of Mosul Dam, Lillian D. Wakeley, Julie R. Kelley, Monte L. Pearson
KIP Articles
Mosul Dam, Iraq, was built in the 1980s on a foundation of soluble geologic materials. Because of the solubility of its foundation and abutments, maintenance grouting began immediately after construction and continues to the present. The U.S. Army is concerned about the stability of the dam, and about the potential military and political impacts that would accompany dam failure. At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Gulf Region Division, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) developed a three-dimensional (3-D) geologic conceptual model of the dam, as a tool to assist with improving dam safety …

Using Urban Landscapes As Tools For Student Leadership Development, David J. Keeling
Engaging the Spirit Presentations 2007: Tools for Student Success
Global experiences as a tool for student engagement and learning are stressed. Using two different urban landscapes as the learning environment, Professor Keeling demonstrates how students in a study abroad program engaged with leadership in planning principles. He uses images and maps to introduce participants to the student engagement learning process. Reading urban landscapes and teaching basic leadership principles are useful ways to enhance the global experience of students.

Reservoir Characterization And Outcrop Analogs To The Navajo Sandstone In The Central Utah Thrust Belt Exploration Play, Ashley Dalrymple
Reservoir Characterization And Outcrop Analogs To The Navajo Sandstone In The Central Utah Thrust Belt Exploration Play, Ashley Dalrymple
Theses and Dissertations
Reservoir heterogeneity plays an important role in oil field economics and completion strategies. We herein characterize the reservoir heterogeneity of the Early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone in the Justensen Flat/Devils Canyon area of the San Rafael Swell, Utah. These outcrops are located approximately 60 kilometers (45 mi) east of the recently discovered Covenant oil field which is located in the central Utah thrust belt exploration play. The reservoir for the Covenant field is the Navajo Sandstone. This study can serve as an outcrop analogue for this developing play and other eolian reservoirs worldwide. There are eight facies within the Navajo Sandstone …
Stratigraphy, Structure, And Origin Of The Mendeleev Ridge From Bathymetry, Controlled Source Seismic, And Gravity Observations, Dayton W. Dove
Stratigraphy, Structure, And Origin Of The Mendeleev Ridge From Bathymetry, Controlled Source Seismic, And Gravity Observations, Dayton W. Dove
Geosciences
Multi-channel-seismic (MCS), seismic refraction, and gravity data collected over the Mendeleev Ridge have been processed and interpreted to describe the crustal style of the ridge, as well as the structural and depositional history. These results provide constraints on the origin of the ridge, and the tectonic evolution of the Amerasian Basin. MCS images reveal two primary sediment sequences separated by an unconformity that persists across the entire Mendeleev Ridge. The basement and lower sediment sequence exhibit pervasive normal faulting and the regional unconformity is interpreted to mark the end of extensional deformation. Modeling of the seismic refraction data reveals an …

Tapered Fluidized Beds And The Role Of Fluidization In Mineral Emplacement, Thomas M. Gernon, Mark A. Gilbertson, R. Stephen J. Sparks, Matthew Field
The 12th International Conference on Fluidization - New Horizons in Fluidization Engineering
One of the most prominent features of fluidized beds is their ability to mix and segregate. This is of great importance for many industrial processes, but takes on a particular significance for mineral extraction where a small amount of valuable matter is mixed with a large amount of waste. In this study we consider the occurrence of diamonds in the volcanic rock called “kimberlite”. These are often emplaced (erupted and deposited) in large volcanic pipes commonly referred to as “diatremes” (length scale of the order of a kilometre) with a vent at the bottom through which the minerals were introduced …

Pollution and over-usage plague water resources worldwide. Yet, those in developing countries feel the effects most acutely. Equipped with knowledge of engineering and science, the ETHOS program will be sending four students, including myself, to the Uxpanapa Valley, in Mexico. The Uxpanapa Valley is located in southern Vera Cruz and is home to the Marianist Development Project DECAMP. Once there we will spend time understanding the culture, investigating water resource related problems and collaborating with the local community to develop the most appropriate solutions. Our goal is to begin background research that will one day lead to clean, reliable sources …
The Geology And Hydrology Of A Proposed Impoundment Of The Upper Sand Creek, Choctaw County, Mississippi, Jonathan R. Mcmillin
The Geology And Hydrology Of A Proposed Impoundment Of The Upper Sand Creek, Choctaw County, Mississippi, Jonathan R. Mcmillin
Theses and Dissertations
The Sand Creek watershed, Choctaw County, Mississippi, constitutes a proposed site for a recreational and water management reservoir. Prior to the development of the site, the geology and hydrogeology of the watershed must be investigated to determine suitability for impoundment. Geological cross sections derived from geophysical logs and field exploration provides information regarding facies distributions within the proposed site area. Discharge characteristics of streams provide data concerning surface runoff that can then be related to the amount of water that is beneficial to the reservoir filling and remaining filled. All data collected and the characteristics of the reservoir are mapped …

The Geologic History Of Subsurface Arkosic Sedimentary Rocks In The San Andreas Fault Observatory At Depth (Safod) Borehole, Central California, Sarah D. Draper
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The aim of the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) project, a component of the NSF Earthscope Initiative, is to directly observe active fault processes at seismogenic depths through the drilling of a 3 km deep (true vertical depth) inclined borehole across San Andreas fault. Preliminary subsurface models based on surface mapping and geophysical data predicted different lithologies than were actually encountered. At 1920 meters measured depth (mmd), a sequence of well-indurated, interbedded arkosic conglomerates, sandstones, and siltstones was encountered. We present a detailed lithologic and structural characterization as a step toward understanding the complex geologic history of this …

Hikorocodium Endo Is Not An Alga But An Inozoid Sponge, J. Keith Rigby, Baba Senowbari-Daryan
Faculty Publications
The genus Hikorocodium, with the type species Hikorocodium elegantae from the Permian of Japan, was described originally as a codiacean alga by Endo. It is not a codiacean alga but an inozoid sponge of the family Preperonidellidae. Several fossils described later by Endo and other authors as H. elegantae should be assigned to different inozoid sponge taxa. Specimens of H. fertiliz, described by Endo from the Jurassic of Japan, are also sponge fragments. The taxonomic positions of H. transversum Endo and H. kuramotoi Nakamura, as sponges or

Extinction Pattern Of Reef Ecosystems In Latest Permian, Yasheng Wu, Jiasong Fan, Hongxia Jiang, Wan Yang
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Studies of two Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) sections on top of a Changhsingian reef in Ziyun, Guizhou Province, southwestern China indicate that the end-Permian mass extinction of reef ecosystems occurred in two steps. The first step is the extinction of all stenotropic organisms such as calcisponges and fusulinids in the latest Permian (in the Clarkina yini conodont zone). The biota after the first extinction is simple, comprising eurytropic organisms including microgastropods, ostracods, and some small burrowing organisms, or only algal mats. At the beginning of the Early Triassic (i.e. the beginning of the Hindeodus parvus zone), the environments became anoxic, and …

United States Geological Survey: Publications
Active geologic processes associated with the Yellowstone hotspot are fundamental in shaping the landscapes of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem (GYE), a high volcanic plateau flanked by a crescent of still higher mountainous terrain. The processes associated with the Yellowstone hotspot are volcanism, faulting, and uplift and are observed in the geology at the surface. We attribute the driving forces responsible for the northeastward progression of these processes to a thermal plume rising through the Earth’s mantle into the base of the southwest-moving North American plate. This progression began 16 million years ago (Ma) near the Nevada-Oregon border and arrived at …

The Yellowstone caldera, like many other late Quaternary calderas of the world, exhibits dramatic unrest. Between 1923 and 1985, the center of the Yellowstone caldera rose nearly 1 m along an axis between its two resurgent domes (Pelton and Smith, 1979; Dzurisin and Yamashita, 1987). From 1985 until 1995–1996, the caldera subsided at about 2 cm/yr (Dzurisin and others, 1990). More recent radar-interferometry studies show renewed inflation of the northeastern resurgent dome between 1995 and 1996; this inflation migrated to the southwestern resurgent dome from 1996 to 1997 (Wicks and others, 1998).

Large quantities of radioactive and chemical wastes resulting from Pu production for nuclear weapons are located in the vadose zone at the USDOE’s Hanford Site, north of Richland, WA. The vadose zone here is characterized by often highly stratified glacial-fluvial sediments that give rise to complex subsurface-flow paths that contribute to uncertainty of contaminant fate and transport. Research efforts have focused on answering questions of contaminant transport from the viewpoint of geologic, biologic, geochemical, and hydrologic controls. This special section highlights key research topics concerning vadose zone problems at the Hanford Site. Research indicates that some of the contaminant species …
