Individual Preferences For Profile Attractiveness Comparing Two Diagnostic Techniques, Jennifer Hamilton

Two analyses using soft tissue landmarks (Arnett's Soft Tissue Cephalometric Analysis, STCA and Andrews' Six Elements Diagnostic System, 6E) were compared for their ability to generate esthetic profiles in lateral repose and smiling. Photographs of 23 subjects were digitally altered to represent the STCA and 6E surgical predictions and presented to panels of professionals and lay people for rating on a visual analog scale (0-50). Professionals and lay people agreed that the 6E simulated profiles were significantly preferred to the Arnett simulated profiles in both smiling and repose. Problem: Dental radiographs generally display one or more findings/diagnoses, and are linked to a unique set of patient demographics, medical history and other findings not represented by the image. However, this information is not associated with radiographs in any type of meta format, and images are not searchable based on any clinical criteria (1,2). The purpose of this pilot study is to create an online, searchable data repository of dental radiographs to be used for patient care, teaching and research. [See PDF for complete abstract]

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) pose a significant threat to the dental profession. There are many risk factors inherent in the tasks of dental professionals that could lead to MSDs. A literature review from professional literature, journal articles, and professional websites was used to determine the various risk factors and types of MSDs that occur in the dental profession; best practices in MSD prevention in the dental field; and the role of occupational therapy ergonomic intervention in the dental field. The information has a solid foundation in Malcolm Knowles' theory of Andragogy.
