Hiv/Aids Surveillance Systems: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nesmah Elkestawi, David Johnston
Hiv/Aids Surveillance Systems: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nesmah Elkestawi, David Johnston
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Current estimates of HIV/AIDS incidences are thought to be inaccurate according to external organizations such as WHO and UNAIDS. It is important to maintain an accurate estimate of prevalence to avoid an unexpected outbreak of a high-level epidemic. Our method of analyzing Egypt’s surveillance system comes primarily from comparisons to other Eastern Mediterranean countries. Research on these regional HIV/AIDS surveillance systems was conducted by studying publications printed by organizations that deal with these issues. To gain primary perspectives on the systems in Egypt, interviews were conducted with representatives of the organizations World Health Organization (WHO) and Family Health International (FHI) …

Mucormycosis Of The Jaw After Dental Extractions : Two Case Reports, Abdulaziz A. Bakathir
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection, which is mainly reported to occur in patients with immunocompromised conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and leukaemias. In this paper, two cases of mucormycosis are reported after dental extractions. The first case of mucormycosis occurred in the maxilla and mandible of a 14 year old male patient undergoing chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia. The second case occurred in the mandible of a 49 year old male patient with a recently diagnosed type-2 diabetes mellitus, presenting with ketoacidosis and underlying undiagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The outcome of these reported cases of mucormycosis was …

A Study On The Common Microorganisms Causing Vaginitis, Aroub Abdul Rahman Al-Kaisi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Inflammation of the vaginal mucosa is a common clinical syndrome. Women often complain of an abnormal discharge and possibly other symptoms such as offensive odor or itching. Trichomonas vaginalis ,candida albicans with other species of candida are well recognized causes of vaginitis Another type of vaginitis referred to as bacterial vaginosis is believed to be caused by Gardnerella vaginalis However, a purulent discharge from the endocervix can be observed in some cases of cevicitis, the endocervix is the site from which Neisseria gonorrhoea is most frequently isolated in women with gonococcal infections. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study …

Winter Feeding Ecology And Biomagnification Of Organochlorine Contaminants In Alaska Polar Bears, Torsten W. Bentzen
Winter Feeding Ecology And Biomagnification Of Organochlorine Contaminants In Alaska Polar Bears, Torsten W. Bentzen
Biological Sciences
Dietary pathways expose polar bears to a variety of contaminant profiles and concentrations, ranging from bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) as one of the least contaminated marine mammals to the more highly contaminated upper trophic level ringed seal (Phoca hispida) which represent the majority of their annual diet. We used stable isotopes [delta]¹⁵N and [delta]¹³C to estimate trophic status of 139 free-ranging polar bears sampled along Alaska's Beaufort Sea coast in spring 2003 and 2004. The [delta]¹⁵N values of polar bear packed blood cells ranged from 18.2% to 21.4% with a mean of 19.5% (SD=0.7) in 2003 and 19.9% (SD=0.7) in …
Protecting Family Drinking Water In Rural Alaska: Improved Water Management In Homes Without Running Water, Shawna R. Laderach
Protecting Family Drinking Water In Rural Alaska: Improved Water Management In Homes Without Running Water, Shawna R. Laderach
Engineering
The objective of this study was to investigate and make recommendations for improved in-home water management in an underserved rural Alaskan community without piped water. The main focus of the study is point-of-use disinfection. A model was developed based on experiments to predict the chlorine decay over time and the necessary chlorine dosage for waters used in the pilot community so that sufficient chlorine residual would remain during storage. TOC concentration, initial chlorination level, reduced iron and temperature were major factors impacting the chlorine consumption. Safe free chlorine levels of between 0.2 mg/L and 4.0 mg/L could be achieved in …

Pro-Inflammatory Properties Of Flavobacterium Columnare Cells And Products On Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Neutrophils, Shannon Billings
All Theses
Flavobacterium columnare and Edwardsiella ictaluri are the leading causes for losses in the aquaculture industry. The losses from the diseases caused by these pathogens total $2.5 million for catfish and $100 million for total aquaculture. F. columnare's infection rates and stressors associated with outbreaks have been well-characterized, but the specific inflammatory responses of catfish neutrophils to the bacteria have not been studied. The objective, therefore, was to investigate the pro-inflammatory effects of the outer membrane proteins, extracellular products, and whole live bacteria, heat-killed (HK), and formalin-killed (FK) F. columnare and E. ictaluri to determine the effects on channel catfish phagocyte …

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
Psychiatrists are often left with the dilemma of which investigations to order in adolescents presenting with a first episode of psychosis. Blood work, urine studies, and neuroimaging studies were tracked in 13 adolescents admitted with a diagnosis of first-episode psychosis over a 13-month period to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Variation was found in the amount of investigation ordered: 85% of patients received a drug screen; 54% a CT scan; 8% an MRI; 92% a CBC with differential; 92% electrolytes. Abnormalities of CT scans were detected in 2 patients (29%); in neither case did the result lead to a …

Development Of A Health Management Information System For The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla Beringei), Richard Brian Minnis
Theses and Dissertations
The Mountain Gorillas of Central Africa are one of the most highly endangered species in the world, with only 740 individuals surviving. One of the greatest threats to this species is disease. Health of wildlife is continually garnering more attention in the public arena due to recent outbreaks of diseases such as West Nile and High Pathogenic Avian Influenza. However, no system currently exists to facilitate the management and analysis of wildlife health data. The research conducted herein was the development and testing of a health information monitoring system for the mountain gorillas entitled Internet-supported Management Program to Assist Conservation …

Populations And Habitat Relationships Of Piute Ground Squirrels In Southwestern Idaho, Karen Steenhof, Eric Yensen, Michael N. Kochert, Kenneth L. Gage
Western North American Naturalist
Piute ground squirrels (Spermophilus mollis idahoensis) are normally above ground from late January until late June or early July in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area in southwestern Idaho. In 2002 they were rarely seen above ground after early May. Because of the ecological importance of ground squirrels for nesting raptors and other species, we sought to determine the reasons for their early disappearance. We sampled 12 sites from January 2003 through March 2003 to determine if a population crash had occurred in 2002. Tests indicated that Piute ground squirrels had not been exposed to …

Serologic Survey Of The Island Spotted Skunk On Santa Cruz Island, Victoria J. Bakker, Dirk H. Van Vuren, Kevin R. Crooks, Cheryl A. Scott, Jeffery T. Wilcox, David K. Garcelon
Western North American Naturalist
Two rare endemic carnivores occur on California's northern Channel Islands: island spotted skunks (Spilogale gracilis amphiala) and island foxes (Urocyon littoralis). As insular carnivores, both may be particularly vulnerable to novel pathogens. We tested sera from 31 island spotted skunks on Santa Cruz Island, where both skunks and foxes occur sympatrically, to establish their exposure to disease agents. One skunk (3%) tested positive for canine heartworm, and 3 skunks (10%) tested positive for canine parvovirus. None showed evidence of exposure to canine adenovirus, canine distemper virus, canine herpesvirus, Leptospira bacteria (serovars pomona, canicola, and …

Electronic Surveillance In Hospitals: A Review, Sue Kennedy
Electronic Surveillance In Hospitals: A Review, Sue Kennedy
Australian Information Security Management Conference
This paper focuses on the increasing use of electronic surveillance systems in hospitals and the apparent lack of awareness of the implications of these systems for privacy of the individual. The systems are used for identification and tracking of equipment, staff and patients. There has been little public comment or analysis of these systems with regard to privacy as their implementation has been driven by security issues. The systems that gather this information include video, smart card and more recently RFID systems. The system applications include tracking of vital equipment, labelling of blood and other samples, tracking of patients, new …

BACKGROUND: National blood donation screening for West Nile virus (WNV) started in June 2003, after the documentation of WNV transfusion-associated transmission (TAT) in 2002.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood donations were screened with investigational nucleic acid amplification assays in minipool formats. Blood collection agencies (BCAs) reported screening results to state and local public health authorities. Donor test results and demographic information were forwarded to CDC via ArboNET, the national electronic arbovirus surveillance system. State health departments and BCAs also reported suspect WNV TATs to CDC, which investigated these reports to confirm WNV infection in blood transfusion recipients in the absence …
