Versions Of America: Reading American Literature For Identity And Difference, Raj G. Chetty Aug 2006

Versions Of America: Reading American Literature For Identity And Difference, Raj G. Chetty

Theses and Dissertations

My paper examines how American authors of the South Asian Diaspora (Indian-American or South Asian American) can be read 1) as simply American and 2) without regard to ethnicity. I develop this argument using American authors Jhumpa Lahiri, a first generation American of Bengali-Indian descent, and Bharati Mukherjee, an American of Bengali-Indian origin. I borrow from Deepika Bahri's materialist aesthetics in postcolonialism (in turn borrowed from members of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory) and include theoretical insights from Rey Chow, Graham Huggan, and R. Radhakrishnan regarding multiculturalism, identity politics, and diaspora studies. Huggan and Radhakrishnan's insights are especially useful …

Theorizing The Diaspora, John C. Hawley Jul 2006

Theorizing The Diaspora, John C. Hawley

English

In his provocative essay on the place of the committed writer in contemporary western society (“Inside the Whale”), George Orwell makes a passing observation about the effects of exile, self-imposed or otherwise, on the scope of a writer’s subject and purpose: “[L]eaving your native land,” he suggests, “[. . .] means transferring your roots into shallower soil. Exile is probably more damaging to a novelist than to a painter or even a poet, because its effect is to take him out of contact with working life and narrow down his range to the street, the cafJ, the church, the brothel …

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism

When the renowned Egyptian physician-psychiatrist, writer, and activist Nawal el Saadawi first told me of her plans to hold a conference entitled "Women, Creativity, and Dissidence" in Cairo, Egypt, in 2005, I immediately envisioned devoting a special issue to the proceedings. At the time, Dr. el Saadawi—whom I had first met some years before as a board member of Meridians-was a visiting Neilson Professor at Smith, and I eagerly anticipated receiving the papers from the conference that would be coedited by both she and Dr. Obioma Nnaemeka...

Painful Discourses: Borders, Regions, And Representations Of Female Circumcision From Africa To America, Tameka Latrece Cage Jan 2006

Painful Discourses: Borders, Regions, And Representations Of Female Circumcision From Africa To America, Tameka Latrece Cage

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project considers issues of representation and how literature, personal testimony, popular culture, and African film script a narrative of change and/or participate in change in the female circumcision debate. Texts that currently shape the female circumcision debate are increasingly focused on viable methods of social change and couch issues of change in dynamics of discourse and representation, including Obioma Nnaemeka’s Female Circumcision and the Politics of Knowledge: African Women in Imperialist Discourses, Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf’s Female Circumcision: Multicultural Perspectives, and Oyèrónké Oyewùmi’s African Women and Feminism: Reflecting on the Politics of Sisterhood, all of which I cite in the …

The Architecture And Iconography Of The Hindu Temple In Eads, Tennessee, Adrian Greville Smythies Jan 2006

The Architecture And Iconography Of The Hindu Temple In Eads, Tennessee, Adrian Greville Smythies

All ETDs from UAB

Many Hindu temples have been built in the United States over the last thirty years. While the sociological reasons for this phenomenon have received scholarly attention, there is little published work on their architecture and iconography. My research redresses this by focusing on the architecture and iconography of the recently completed temple at Eads, Tennessee, selected because it was built to resemble traditional temples in south India. Eads was designed by a prolific Hindu temple architect and reflects current trends in American Hindu temple design. Specifically, this study identifies, analyses, and documents transformations from traditional temple design occurring in the …

Exploring The Lived Experience Of Doctoral Study In Counselingpsychology: A Phenomenological Approach, Ryan Evans Gillespie Jan 2006

Exploring The Lived Experience Of Doctoral Study In Counselingpsychology: A Phenomenological Approach, Ryan Evans Gillespie

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher investigated the lived experience of counselingPsychology doctoral study through the perceptions of eight advanced students using a modified version of Seidman's (1998) phenomenological approach to interviewing and Colaizzi's (1978) phenomenological method of analysis. The findings of this study indicated that counselingPsychology doctoral study is a complex phenomenon involving numerous instances of challenge and change. Among these challenges is the overwhelming, all-encompassing and personally intrusive nature of counselingPsychology doctoral study. Changes discussed by the participants were both personal and professional in nature. Several changes, including personal and professional growth and the individualization of counselingPsychology doctoral study, constituted primary sources …
