Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Stimulating New Method For Treating Depression, But Saddled With The Same Old Problems, Mark S. George Oct 2006

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Stimulating New Method For Treating Depression, But Saddled With The Same Old Problems, Mark S. George

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

When Dr Tony Barker designed and built the first modern TMS device in 1985 in Sheffield, England, he probably could not have predicted then how things would evolve with his ‘ fancy gadget’ (Barker et al., 1985). For the first time he had built a machine powerful enough to non-invasively induce currents within the brain and spinal cord. Because TMS can create focal transient lesions, as well as measure brain excitability and regional connectivity, neuroscientists all around the world are now busily using it to understand the brain. TMS research is shown at every major neuroscience meeting now, with articles …

Effects Of A Personified Guide On Adherence To An Online Program For Alcohol Abusers., Daniel Z Lieberman Oct 2006

Effects Of A Personified Guide On Adherence To An Online Program For Alcohol Abusers., Daniel Z Lieberman

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

The quality of the therapeutic alliance has robust effects on the outcome of psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic interventions. Automated behavioral health programs that are being developed to increase access to mental health treatment are administered in the absence of direct human participation, thereby precluding the development of a traditional therapeutic relationship. The aim of this study was to develop a personified guide designed to stimulate reactions similar to those experienced in a therapeutic relationship, and evaluate the effect of the guide on adherence to and satisfaction with an online alcohol use evaluation program. After completing a battery of four standard questionnaires …

In the delivery of clinical services, outcomes monitoring (i.e., repeated assessments of a patient's response to treatment) can be used to support clinical decision making (i.e., recurrent revisions of outcome expectations on the basis of that response). Outcomes monitoring can be particularly useful in the context of established practice research networks. This article presents a strategy to disaggregate patients into homogeneous subgroups to generate optimal expected treatment response profiles, which can be used to predict and track the progress of patients in different treatment modalities. The study was based on data from 618 diagnostically diverse patients treated with either a …

Teaching Graduate Trainees How To Manage Client Anger: A Comparison Of Three Types Of Training, Shirley A. Hess, Sarah Knox, Clara E. Hill May 2006

Teaching Graduate Trainees How To Manage Client Anger: A Comparison Of Three Types Of Training, Shirley A. Hess, Sarah Knox, Clara E. Hill

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The authors examined the effects of three types of training (supervisor-facilitated training, self-training, biblio-training) on 62 graduate student therapists' state anxiety, self-efficacy for dealing with anger, and helping skills (i.e., reflections and immediacy) in response to videotaped vignettes of angry clients. Training overall was rated as very helpful, and trainees increased in self-efficacy for working with client anger. Supervisor-facilitated training was rated as more helpful than, and was preferred to, self-training and biblio-training; it also led to more reflection of feelings in response to clients. Results suggest that vignettes such as these might be a helpful adjunct to training once …

Supportive-Expressive Psychotherapy For Cannabis Dependence, Brin F. Grenyer, Nadia Solowij Jan 2006

Supportive-Expressive Psychotherapy For Cannabis Dependence, Brin F. Grenyer, Nadia Solowij

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Supportive–expressive (SE) dynamic psychotherapy forms one variation of a number of psychotherapies that emphasize the importance of effective interpersonal relationships for psychological health (Grenyer, 2002a). The overall goal of SE psychotherapy is to help the client achieve mastery over their difficulties, gain self-understanding, and practice self-control over habitual drug use and related problems. From this framework, cannabis dependence is understood within the context of the client's interpersonal relationships, work, and social problems. The theory behind the SE approach emphasizes the formative influence of life experiences on the development of personality and on the genesis of problems, including habitual cannabis use. …

Truth As Relationship: The Psychology Of E. Graham Howe, Ian Charles Edwards Jan 2006

Truth As Relationship: The Psychology Of E. Graham Howe, Ian Charles Edwards

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dr. Eric Graham Howe (d. 1975) was one of the most important psychologists in early 20th century Britain. Yet, for the most part, his work is relatively unknown. Howe was unjustly dismissed by the psychoanalytic community of his time. Howe was not only left out of the history of psychoanalysis, but also the history of psychology. Because of Howe's uninhibited eclecticism, because both the psychoanalytic and psychological literatures have ignored his work, and because he contributed to his own posthumous neglect, it was necessary to write a comprehensive survey of Howe's writings. Such a survey demonstrated the depth of his …

Effekte Pharmakologischer Und Psychotherapeutischer Interventionen Auf Depressionen Bei Kindern Und Jugendlichen. [Effects Of Pharmaco- And Psychotherapeutic Interventions Of Depression In Children And Adolescents]., Patrick Pössel, Martin Hautzinger

Faculty Scholarship

Transsexual Individuals’ Experiences In Psychotherapy : A Partial Replication, Elizabeth Ehrmann Jan 2006

Transsexual Individuals’ Experiences In Psychotherapy : A Partial Replication, Elizabeth Ehrmann

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

For many individuals, the topic of transsexualism is a very taboo and stigmatized subject; that is why many transsexual individuals seek psychotherapy. The goal of this study is to discover what transsexual individuals' experiences in psychotherapy are like. The sample consisted of 19 transsexual participants (13 Male-to-Female, 6 Female-to-Male) and each completed a 41-item survey that focused on demographics, transitioning, reasons for seeking therapy, what changed in their lives as a result of therapy, and feelings about the participants' professional caregiver. Although not statistically significant, there was a pattern that correlated level of education achieved with where the individual is …

Ricoeur’S Critical Hermeneutics And The Psychotherapeutic Model Of Critical Theory, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2006

Ricoeur’S Critical Hermeneutics And The Psychotherapeutic Model Of Critical Theory, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

This paper seeks to extend Ricoeur’s acclaimed mediation of the Gadamer-Habermas debate. Freud’s psychoanalytic practice was an important touchstone for the debate, and Ricoeur’s reading of Freud provides a key to his critical intervention in the debate. The emerging postmodern account of psychotherapeutic practice provides a model of the critical hermeneutics that Ricoeur championed. Bringing Ricoeur’s insights to bear on this model, we can advance the questioning spurred by the Gadamer-Habermas debate without pretending to bring closure to the unending conversation of thinking.
