The Myths and Legends of Holy Cross
Folklorists agree that college campuses are ideal breeding grounds for urban legends and a quick inventory of Holy Cross myths confirms that assessment. The exorcism in the spire. The Jeanne Dixon prophecy. The horse on the roof of Kimball Hall. In this issue, HCM digs into these and other curious stories that perennially bloom on Mount St. James.

Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer Dec 2005

Valuing Earth Intrinsically And Instrumentally: A Theological Framework For Environmental Ethics, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Philosophers have struggled with value theory as one of the most recalcitrant problems for environmental ethics. Theologians can benefit from their efforts when retrieving and reworking notions about the goodness of creation in patristic and medieval texts, particularly those by Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Thomas Aquinas. This process yields a religiously motivated rationale for intrinsic-instrumental valuing of the physical world's constituents for themselves, their relationships to one another, and their common good that can be relevant, meaningful, and helpful for responding to ecological degradation.

Joseph Smith And The Past, John W. Welch Dec 2005

Joseph Smith And The Past, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

My thoughts on Joseph Smith’s interest in past worlds cluster into three sections. The first deals with the challenge of evaluating and assessing Joseph Smith’s recoveries of texts or views from past worlds or civilizations. The second develops a list of ways in which the past functioned in Joseph Smith’s process of continuing revelation. The third focuses on the dynamic link between the past and the present in Joseph Smith’s concept of priesthood authority and its restoration.

Joseph Smith In A Personal World, Dallin H. Oaks Dec 2005

Joseph Smith In A Personal World, Dallin H. Oaks

BYU Studies

My subject is Joseph Smith in a personal world. My lens is primarily a personal one—his impact on me and believers I have known during my lifetime. I will also discuss Joseph Smith’s own personal world and his impact on his acquaintances and friends. A major focus will be Joseph Smith’s role as a prophet and his teachings on the reality of revelation. By prophet I mean one who speaks for God in revealing divine truth to others. By revelation I mean God’s communication to man—to prophets and to every one of us, if we seek.

Attempting To Situate Joseph Smith, Grant Underwood Dec 2005

Attempting To Situate Joseph Smith, Grant Underwood

BYU Studies

Undergirding Richard Bushman’s insightful paper is a profound recognition (and a reminder) that histories are the creations of authors, not photographs of the past. Every aspect of writing a history, from the selection of sources to the interpretation of those sources bears the imprint of the author. The profoundly precarious and contingent character of all reconstructions of the past led Roland Barthes to quip that biography is “a novel that dare not speak its name.” Clearly, this is an overstatement, but it does warn us away from an unhealthy critical complacency when engaging in studying written histories.

World Religion: Dynamics And Constraints, Douglas J. Davies Dec 2005

World Religion: Dynamics And Constraints, Douglas J. Davies

BYU Studies

Mormonism as a world religion and Joseph Smith as its originating prophet furnish the subject of this paper. A brief theoretical reflection on approaching The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides both an opening context for the quantitatively focused debate on Mormonism’s potential for growth into world religion status and an introduction for a more extensive consideration of several factors of a more qualitative kind that may foster or inhibit that development. The paper then ponders the issue of identity in relation to Joseph Smith.

John Lancaster Spalding (1840-1916): A Catalyst For Social Reform, Lucinda A. Nolan Dec 2005

John Lancaster Spalding (1840-1916): A Catalyst For Social Reform, Lucinda A. Nolan

Journal of Catholic Education

The life and work of John Lancaster Spalding focused on the importance of Catholic ideals of life and education in the development of the human person and society in order to fit them to the high purpose of participating in God’s reign on earth and preparation for humanity’s ultimate end”eternal life with God. Following a brief biographical introduction, this article addresses the central themes of Bishop Spalding’s social thought and proposes that his attempts to articulate a Catholic perspective on social justice issues of his time were among the earliest in the United States. The article concludes by focusing on …

Justice Education As A Schoolwide Effort: Effective Religious Education In The Catholic School, Michael P. Horan

Journal of Catholic Education

This essay describes and analyzes one successful justice education program flowing from community service, and demonstrates how such a program in Catholic school responds to several important “calls” to Catholic educators. These “calls” are issued by (a) the needs of the learners and the signs of the times, (b) official documents of the Church about the mission of the Catholic school and the faith growth of youth, and (c) a creative reading of history and contemporary expression of religious education that involves cooperation among all teachers and all subject areas in the school. The essay begins with a description of …

Incarnational Immersion-Based Learning In Cultural Contexts: A Charity Model, John Trokan Dec 2005

Incarnational Immersion-Based Learning In Cultural Contexts: A Charity Model, John Trokan

Journal of Catholic Education

The Religious Pastoral Studies and Behavioral Sciences Departments of a Midwestern college have collaborated in offering academic courses in theology and anthropology that include service immersion experiences with people of diverse cultures in South Dakota, North Carolina, New Mexico, Kentucky, and Honduras. This paper explores the incarnational dimension of immersion experiences between native peoples and college students. Using a contextual theology model, students and faculty from various social science and religious studies disciplines reflect with native people on the historical and contemporary elements of their culture and spirituality. This paper discusses the historical development of the immersion courses, methodology, curriculum …
