Maintaining Privacy During Psychosocial Research On The International Space Station, Jennifer Boyd Ritsher, Nick Kanas, Stephanie Saylor

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Conducting psychosocial research on the International Space Station (ISS) requires rigorous privacy precautions that exceed standard scientific human subject protocols. In our previous study involving crewmembers on Mir, and in our ongoing ISS work, special precautions were taken during each phase of the missions. Pre-flight, participants received detailed consent forms explaining that only group-level data would be presented, and they chose ID codes known only to them. In-flight, special procedures protected data during collection and transmission. Post-flight, our analytic strategy further masked participants’ identities, and participant representatives were invited to review manuscript drafts prior to publication. In this paper we …

Lunette: Lunar Farside Gravity Mapping By Nanosat, Henry Spencer, Kieran Carroll, Jafar Arkani-Hamed, Robert Zee

Small Satellite Conference

One significant item of unfinished business in lunar exploration is the mapping of the Moon’s notoriously-irregular gravitational field. This is of interest to science because it sheds light on the lunar interior, to exploration because it may help find useful resources, and to engineers because it is important for planning and operating missions in lunar orbit. Past mapping efforts have been severely hampered by the impossibility of Earthbased tracking of spacecraft over the lunar farside; the farside parts of the resulting maps are of questionable reliability. Many lunar-orbiter proposals have envisioned solving this with subsatellites, but none has yet flown. …

Faculty Scholarly Works

This article addresses the many significant transnational legal practice developments that took place in 2003 and 2004, which were particularly significant years. After a short introduction, Section II describes international developments, and Section III describes domestic regulatory developments affecting lawyers engaged in multijurisdictional practice.

The developments in Section II include those related to the WTO’s General Agreement on Trade in Services [GATS] negotiations. This section summarizes the 2003-04 status of the legal services request-offer process, including the United States’ “offer” and its proposed changes to the legal services portion of its Schedule of Specific Commitments. The article described a “Summit” …

Nonprofit Human Services Agencies And Reliance Upon Government Funding: Implications For Organizational Development, Leon D. Winston May 2005

Nonprofit Human Services Agencies And Reliance Upon Government Funding: Implications For Organizational Development, Leon D. Winston

Master's Theses

Based on interviews with the executive directors of twenty human service agencies from San Francisco, CA, which received 60% or more of their funding from government sources, this study explores what organizational and operational benefits and challenges these executives attribute to reliance on government for funding support.

The theoretical framework for the study relies on resource dependency theory within a natural or open systems model of organizational development. This illuminates the relationships between nonprofit human services agencies and the government agencies that fund them. The dependency relationship is seen as being of mutual benefit, although power distribution within these relationships …

Red Lake, White Earth And ‘Blackgowns’: The Indian Industrial Schools Of St. John’S Abbey And St. Benedict’S Monastery, 1884-1896, Thomas Reichert

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

How and more importantly, why did the Benedictines become involved in off-reservation Industrial Schools? In this thesis, it is my goal to answer these questions. The opening of the schools was the result of three factors. First, the Benedictines subscribed to the popular beliefs and stereotypes about the Indians and what should be done with them. Second, the material situation of the mission, as well as the relationship between the Benedictines and the other involved parties on the reservation, created a situation where an off-reservation venture would seem desirable. Third, the financial situation of St. John's and St. Benedict's would …

A Critique Of The Urban Mission Of The Church In The Light Of An Emerging Postmodern Condition, Kleber De Oliveira Goncalves Jan 2005

A Critique Of The Urban Mission Of The Church In The Light Of An Emerging Postmodern Condition, Kleber De Oliveira Goncalves

Dissertations

The world is becoming an urban society. The urban expansion witnessed during the twentieth century and continuing into the twenty-first century is unprecedented in the history of the human civilization. Simultaneously, the Western world faces the paradigm shift from the modern era to a postmodern condition. Both movements have remarkable implications for the mission of the church in urbanized, postmodernizing societies. Shaped by the modern worldview, the church is now further ostracized by the postmodern condition.

While the literature of urban mission has grown in the past few years, very little consideration has been given to the particular issues and …
