The Myths and Legends of Holy Cross
Folklorists agree that college campuses are ideal breeding grounds for urban legends and a quick inventory of Holy Cross myths confirms that assessment. The exorcism in the spire. The Jeanne Dixon prophecy. The horse on the roof of Kimball Hall. In this issue, HCM digs into these and other curious stories that perennially bloom on Mount St. James.

The Shoah Foundation's Visual History: U-M'S Access To The Holocaust, David Carter, Elliot Gertel, Nerea A. Llamas, Michael D. Miller
Robert E. Kennedy Library
In 1994, following the filming of Schindler's List, many survivors of the Nazi Holocaust came forward to offer their stories. Realizing that time was running out to document these personal histories, film director Steven Spielberg established the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation (SVHF). In late 2003, the U-M University Library initiated contact with the SVHF with the goal of bringing access to the Video History Archive to the U-M campus.

Religious Participation As Cultural Capital Development: Sector Differences In Chicago’S Jewish Schools, Adam Gamoran, Matthew Boxer
Religious Participation As Cultural Capital Development: Sector Differences In Chicago’S Jewish Schools, Adam Gamoran, Matthew Boxer
Journal of Catholic Education
This paper uses the case of Jewish schools in Chicago to explore the role of religious schools in the development of cultural capital among youth. The author focus on three sectors of Jewish Schools (Orthodox day schools, non-Orthodox day schools, and non-Orthodox supplementary schools) as contexts for learning and expressing Jewish practices, affiliations, and beliefs, which are understood to be markers of cultural capital for the Jewish community. Survey results from 834 students in grades 7-12 revealed that family and school environments are independently associated with cultural capital development. Generally, the contributions of families are more prominent than the impact …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances
What a tremendous pleasure it is to be here today to dedicate our new Wagonhammer Education Center and the Ray (Boo-ee) Bohy Conference. Room it contains. I look at this building and I think of all the ways it can and will enhance education, learning, and research conducted here at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory. That thought delights me, both on behalf of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the work we do here, and on behalf of the Nebraskans and others who come here to learn, and to grow their knowledge and skills for the future.

The Ties That Bind: Experiences Of Family In Maine, 1900-Present, Univeristy Of Southern Maine, Susie Bock, Joseph S. Wood, Maureen Elgersman Lee, Abraham J. Peck, Howard M. Solomon
Publications (Annual Event Catalog)
The Ties That Bind opens a window to meaning in the material culture of Mainers outside the dominant culture. Focusing on family, the three Center scholars whose work is catalogued here provide a lens that allows us to peer through that window into something of the complex nature of difference. The three scholars reveal otherwise anonymous Maine people, whose very anonymity came from the difference that was culturally constructed to segregate them from the dominant culture. Family, which reflects something common to every different culture, works here to highlight unity in human diversity. In that way, family also provides a …

Biblical Psalms Outside The Psalter, James W. Watts
Biblical Psalms Outside The Psalter, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
Psalms appear irregularly in the narrative and prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible, at Exod 15:1-21, Deut 32:1-43, Jdg 5, 1 Sam 2:1-20, 2 Samuel 22, Isa 38:9-20, Jon 2:3-10, Habakkuk 3, Dan 2:20-23, 1 Chron 16:8-36; in the Apocrypha/Deuterocanon at Daniel 3, Jdg 16:1-17, Tobit 13; and in the New Testament at Lk 1:46-5,67-79. More often, fragments of hymns and other poems are quoted as natural parts of story-lines (e.g. 2 Sam 1:17-27; 3:33-34) or are employed as elements in prophetic compositions (e.g. Am 4:13; 5:8; 9:5-6). Complete poetic compositions appear less frequently but more prominently. Many of these …

The Heavenly Sanctuary/Temple Motif In The Hebrew Bible : Function And Relationship To The Earthly Counterparts, Elias Brasil De Souza
The Heavenly Sanctuary/Temple Motif In The Hebrew Bible : Function And Relationship To The Earthly Counterparts, Elias Brasil De Souza
Dissertations
The present dissertation investigates the function of the heavenly sanctuary/temple and its relationship to the earthly counterparts, as reflected in forty-three passages of Hebrew Bible.
Following an introductory chapter, the second chapter of this dissertation is devoted to a survey of the heavenly sanctuary/temple motif in the ANE literature, as represented by Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Ugaritic, and Egyptian texts. The investigation of these texts reveals that the heavenly sanctuary/temple motif was part of the worldview of the ANE, where the heavenly sanctuary was not only assumed as existing in heaven, but also as functioning in close relationship to the earthly …
