Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications
Interoperability across Modeling and Simulation (M&S) and Command and Control (C2) systems continues to be a significant problem for today's warfighters. M&S is well-established in military training, but it can be a valuable asset for planning and mission rehearsal if M&S and C2 systems were able to exchange information, plans, and orders more effectively. To better support the warfighter with M&S based capabilities, an open standards-based framework is needed that establishes operational and technical coherence between C2 and M&S systems.

We review three areas of recent research on Hudson River bay anchovy. One focus has been the along-estuary movement of early life stages. A cohort analysis of samples collected in a spatiotemporally extensive monitoring program has confirmed that early-stage anchovy migrate up-estuary, at an estimated rate of 0.6 km/d. Complementary fine-scale field sampling was designed to clarify behaviors that effect the migration. This work found that early-stage anchovy can show preferences for depth and can conduct periodic vertical migration. To determine whether these behaviors were sufficient to produce up-estuary migration, larval flux and velocity were estimated. These estimates were consistent …

Using A Literary Case Study To Teach Lawyering Skills: How We Used Damages By Barry Werth In The First-Year Legal Writing Curriculum, Jeanne M. Kaiser, Myra Orlen
Faculty Scholarship
First-year law students arrive for their first day of classes with varying perceptions about the practice of law and what it means to be a lawyer. Although some students have first-hand knowledge of the profession based on their work in a law office or from family members who are attorneys, many students base their entire conception of what it means to be a lawyer on images from popular media. The Authors discuss how they used a literary account to acquaint students with an authentic picture of litigation, while still teaching the rudiments of legal research and writing. The book used …

The primary goal of the Natural Resources Outreach Coalition (NROC) program is to provide education and outreach to communities in the NH Coastal Watersheds that are dealing with the effects of growth, and looking for ways to conserve open spaces and natural resources. Program objectives to meet this goal include: 1. NROC and client communities determine natural resource concerns of the communities. 2. NROC and client communities gather community information about these concerns 3. NROC develops and client communities host community presentations about natural resource-based planning. 4. Communities receive follow up technical and educational assistance as requested. In 2005, NROC …

Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark
Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper presents a Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) motion planning algorithm to be queried within Dynamic Robot Networks—a multi-robot coordination platform for robots operating with limited sensing and inter-robot communication. First, the Dynamic Robot Networks (DRN) coordination platform is introduced that facilitates centralized robot coordination across ad hoc networks, allowing safe navigation in dynamic, unknown environments. As robots move about their environment, they dynamically form communication networks. Within these networks, robots can share local sensing information and coordinate the actions of all robots in the network. Second, a fast single-query Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) to be called within the DRN …

The Connotations Of ‘Urfi Marriage At A Time Of Reform: Views Of Aucians, Yulia Akinfieva
The Connotations Of ‘Urfi Marriage At A Time Of Reform: Views Of Aucians, Yulia Akinfieva
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes and perceptions of ‘Urfi marriage among students of the American University in Cairo. The sample consists of 48 undergraduate AUC students of which 24 are males and 24 are females. All subjects are Egyptian nationals. All subjects completed a questionnaire consisting of 26 questions aiming at revealing attitudes and perceptions. The research reveals that AUCians tend to view ‘Urfi marriage as being “cover” for pre-marital, illegal and secretive sexual relations. The majority stated that they would not contract this type of marriage under any circumstances and that society as a whole …

The Egyptian Banking Reform: "Unified Banking Laws", Nabila Al-Ariki, Dalia Ibrahim
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Banking reform is a fundamental branch of economic development that has frequently been used by policy-makers in attempts to stimulate the Egyptian economy. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has a major role in improving the performance of the Egyptian Banking sector. In order to achieve its goal, it has had to increase its strength by passing new banking laws in cooperation with the Egyptian government. These laws include reforms in the systems of banking management, eliminating bureaucracy, encouraging transparency, privatization of banks, modernizing the Egyptian payment system, inter-bank transactions, supervising the performance of banks, and achieving a higher degree …

Intelligent Resource Discovery Using Ontology-Based Resource Profiles, J. Steven Hughes, Dan Crichton, Sean Kelly, Chris A. Mattmann, Jerry Crichton, Thuy Tran
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Successful resource discovery across heterogeneous repositories is highly dependent on the semantic and syntactic homogeneity of the associated resource descriptions in each repository. Ideally, consistent resource descriptions are easily extracted from each repository, expressed using standard syntactic and semantic structures, and managed and accessed within a distributed, flexible, and scalable software framework. In practice however, seldom do all three of these elements exist. To help address this situation, the Object Oriented Data Technology (OODT) project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has developed an extensible, standards-based resource description scheme that provides the necessary description and management facilities for the discovery of …

Intraspinal Tumor Associated With Hydrocephalus: A Casereport, Sheng-Hsiang Su, Kuo-Sheng Hung, Jen-Wen Hung
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Intraspinal tumor associated with hydrocephalus is a well known but uncommon phenomenon. It is difficult to diagnose accurately if clinical hydrocephalus symptoms are presented, comprising unsteady gait, urinary incontinence, dementia, headache and papilledema. The patient in this study was a 77 years old male whose main problems included impaired walking, dementia and delirium. He received V-P shunt because of brain CT disclosing communicating hydrocephalus. Patient consciousness improved following operation, but bilateral lower limb weakness became worse. Following spinal MRI examination, an intraspinal tumor at L1 level was noted. The patient underwent laminectomy and partial tumor removal, but metastatic intraspinal adenocarcinoma …
