Egypt’S Opposition Parties: A "Loyal" Opposition, Samy Asfour
Egypt’S Opposition Parties: A "Loyal" Opposition, Samy Asfour
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Opposition parties are often labeled as a loyal opposition rather than competitor, due to their inability to formulate an alternative policy to the government and create a strong popular base. These shortcomings can be traced back to the foundations of the Egyptian multi-party system. This paper attempts to examine the opposition party from another perspective and examines the oppositional New Wafd party in terms of democratic party structure and the degree of popular appeal.

Journal of Religion & Film
The commercial film industry creates cultural products that often reflect societal norms. The popularity of these images is based on the fact that they reflect the "anxieties and longings” of their audience: as contemporary cultural "texts,” they are capable of expressing "the pressing concerns” of a moment in history. Film is often informed by the news, and reinforces the images portrayed through these media outlets: they are capable of conveying religious ideology and values in contemporary culture. Popular media such as cinema performs religious functions as public sites for the vocalization and discussion of meaning. Therefore films, as a social …

Teacher Training Via Digital Apprenticeship To Master Teachers Of Arabic: Exposure, Reflection, And Replication As Instruments For Change In Novice Instructor Teaching Style, Jeremy L. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
The Modern Language Association (MLA) recently reported that from 1998 to 2002 there was a 92% increase in Arabic programs throughout the United States. With the increase in media coverage of current events in the Middle East, more and more students are desiring to learn about the region's languages and cultures. More teachers of Arabic are needed to meet this growing demand for Arabic instruction. This thesis investigates whether deliberate intervention via explicit and implicit exposure to the instructional behavior, skills, and strategies of master teachers of Arabic, combined with replication thereof, as well as critical personal reflection, positively alters …

Based on cognitive approaches to second language learning, the thesis emphasizes the correspondence between MSA and ECA, and argues for simultaneous teaching of the two varieties from basic levels onward. Development in CALL technology can effectively implement cognitive principles and realize the goals of the integrated approach in the field of TAFL. The thesis describes a software program designed for teaching beginners MSA and ECA simultaneously using idioms as a unifying conceptual element.

The Introduction Of Military Slavery: A Political Expedient, Brian Eastwood
The Introduction Of Military Slavery: A Political Expedient, Brian Eastwood
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Military slavery constituted one of the most important institutions in medieval Islamic history. Most research concerning military slavery concentrates on the Mamluk dynasty, while relatively little research explores the beginning of the institution and the reasons for its introduction. Those works that concentrate on military slavery or the 'Abbasid time period either use it as an example for other arguments or do not provide enough detail to create a complete argument. As a result, the origins of an institution that affected almost a thousand years of Islamic history are not well understood. To understand the emergence of military slavery, primary …

Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis looks at inscriptions on lustre painted vessels in the Fatimid period as a dating criterion. Consideration is given to developments in calligraphy and its layout on vessels relative to painting. Five groups are classified each containing two or three examples, one of which simultaneously constitutes a link to the previous group and a development towards a new style. The vessels examined belong chiefly to the schools of the potters Muslim and Sa'd. To further fine tune classification, potters' signatures and inscription content on vessels are also examined, as are trademarks, painting styles and subject matter. Lastly, an attempt …

Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty
Institutionalization And Reform: The Case Of The National Democratic Party In Egypt, Safinaz El Tarouty
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the National Democratic Party in Egypt (NDP). It assesses the internal dynamics and reforms of the party between 2000 and 2004 and asks to what extent these reforms have influenced the nature and institutionalization of the party. Starting from the emergence of the Egyptian republic, it traces the rise and development of the consecutive single parties under Nasser and the creation of the NDP under Sadat in 1978. This thesis suggests that the reforms of 2000 do not appear to have significantly increased the level of institutionalization of Egypt’s persistently dominant party. It argues that the reforms …

The Hopes And Fears Of Post-9/11 Years, Mel Piehl
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
In 1998 Arthur Levine and Jeannette Cureton wrote in When Hope and Fear Collide: A Portrait of Today’s College Student that the current college generation they had studied was “wearied by the enormous pressure they face economically, politically, socially, and psychologically. At the same time, they are energized by a desire to enjoy the good life and make their corner of the world a better place. This is a generation in which hope and fear are colliding” (17).

The authors examine the linkage between the social justice claims of Japanese Americans during WWII and Muslim Americans in today's post-9/11 era. Muslims are considered a significant component of the war on terror, but it is unclear whether this classification is based upon race or religion.

The buildings of the different Islamic dynasties in Egypt with their great cultural and aesthetic significance have survived and remained functional despite numerous natural as well as man-made disasters. This was possible not only because of the high structural engineering knowledge and construction techniques with which they were built, but also due to the existence of the waqf system, which was not merely a system of endowments for charitable and pious causes, such as constructing mosques and schools but also a system concerned with maintenance and repair. Its main aim was the upkeep of the charitable act and the benefit …

Art Of The Astrolabe, Heather Suzanne Campbell
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The astrolabe is a well known scientific instrument, commonly found in Islamic art collections. Despite its placement in art museums, it does not receive the same examination or discussion as other metalwork. This leads to errors in dating and place of origin when an instrument that lacks a dedication inscription or a signature.
This study places the astrolabe in an art historical context and not a scientific one.
Much literature has been written on this instrument concentrating on the scientific nature of the instrument or as part of a collection of scientific instruments. Its history, function, place in society and …

Gender, Citizenship And Personal Status Laws: Egypt & Morocco Compared, Yvette Fayez Isaac
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This research puts forward the argument that the state can utilize, negotiate and transform laws according to the different forces it faces and that this has its implications on citizenship rights for women. The study accomplishes this by comparing Egypt and Morocco, two Arab [and North African] countries that have undergone recent changes in their personal status laws (also called family laws). Methodologically speaking, this is achieved through examining the impact of the rising pressure of women's groups and local NGOs to challenge the rising Islamic activism (internal factors), and the impact of globalization, and international conventions and organizations (external …

Vietnam After "Vietnam": An Analysis Of International Coverage In "The New York Times"., Ai Than Hoang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Content analysis of 597 Vietnam stories published by the New York Times in eight years (1985, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001) found the coverage of Vietnam shrank gradually in each decade. Long and front-page stories accounted for very low percentages in the sample, though the paper did not give Vietnam an increasingly lower priority in front-page placement and length. The coverage of postwar Vietnam was essentially neutral in the text but biased in its choice of topics. Vietnam news had a distinct American orientation, and remained largely politically and Washington driven. These findings indicate the New York Times …

In the post-9/11 era, what exactly is meant by race? This essay claims that both domestic civil rights law and international human rights law simultaneously create and obscure racial identity increasingly constructed through Muslim religious identity. The argument unfolds in several parts. First, by analogy to the racial formation process that occurred with the Japanese American community after World War II, we argue that a group's religious identity can contribute to the perception of a group as a racially different and inferior "other." Second, among other elements, religious identity is under-analyzed as a key element of racial formation. Third, post-9/11 …
